The first official painted portrait of King Charles III since his coronation has been unveiled at Buckingham Palace.

The vast oil on canvas shows a larger-than-life King Charles in the uniform of the Welsh Guards.
The vivid red work, measuring about 8ft 6in by 6ft 6in, is by Jonathan Yeo, who has also painted Tony Blair, Sir David Attenborough and Malala Yousafzai.

Queen Camilla is said to have looked at the painting and told Yeo: "Yes, you've got him."

fuck off flattering portraitist to the rich, Jonathan Yeo. He's much balder than that and your paintings suck.

the subtle touch of a monarch butterfly about to land on his shoulder, presumably just after vacating the shoulder of the queen as she passed away

the bloated, anatomically wrong looking hands reveal that this Yeo dude was always shit at life drawing and is incapable of observing the human form.

not that he is dealing with a human form here!

The fingers are the one bit that he might have got right in this case.

painting makes me want to see a Bacon screaming pope version of Charles

trying (and failing) to do the face in a realism style and then doing the hands in a Beryl Cook style is a jarring mix imo

See, I get the exact opposite feeling — if it hadn't been officially commissioned, people would be talking about how it was a painting of the king burning in hell, or drowning in the blood of exploited colonial subjects, or something. When I posted it on Twitter I juxtaposed it with the skinned corpse guy writing I AM IN HELL HELP ME on the wall in blood from Hellraiser 2. And that's why I like it.

Someone on my timeline juxtaposed it with Bloody Prom Carrie.

If on his deathbed the artist admits that this is King Charles in hell, the blood of the empire, I would then think it was a pretty good portrait.

oh Francis Bacon butties, come off it, it's merely a standard portrait with some superficial painterly moodmaking, to make it look more *modern*. There is not a lot to it.

That Katzenbach portrait is stellar, first time I've ever thought having a portrait of myself could be worthwhile

Him blurring into the background is super strange, as if his head and hands are just floating there in a ghostly manner. The fleshy pink red contrasting with his wizened appearance adds to the effect. And I cannot make sense of the butterfly except as a symbol of imminent death.
