Him blurring into the background is super strange, as if his head and hands are just floating there in a ghostly manner. The fleshy pink red contrasting with his wizened appearance adds to the effect. And I cannot make sense of the butterfly except as a symbol of imminent death.

The painting itself isn't bad at all

Nabozo, Wednesday, 15 May 2024 07:29 (one month ago) link

The butterfly is a Monarch.

It refers to Elizabeth’s metamorphosis when she emerges from her pupal state

I just cannot comprehend that some ppl think this is a good portrait!

The inclusion of the butterfly is truly pathetic.

I don't know why people get so aggressive over a painting - I like it. I may not like the guy on it much, but I like the portrait.

StanM, Wednesday, 15 May 2024 13:30 (one month ago) link

As for the portrait of the King, Yeo said on his website that the vivid colors of the glazes are “not only resonating with the royal heritage found in many historical portraits but also injecting a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre with its uniformly powerful hue — providing a modern contrast to more traditional depictions.”

"a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre.."

this fucking tool brings out my inner Brian Sewell, fwiw imo a daubed and overworked pseudo-painterly background behind a very unremarkable and follically flattering portrait maketh not what this hack says it maketh! Anyway this seems the correct thread to aggressively dislike a bad royal portrait by a pisspoor artist.

I hate to say this, but Jonathan Jones of the Graun is almost completely otm - the review makes all the correct criticisms this piece of shite deserves, but then gives it a completely unearned one star rating.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 15 May 2024 14:26 (one month ago) link

the review loses me when it demands a more realistic portrayal of Charles, the difficult, complex man he is .. blah blah .. he's a facile, selfish man-child. I don't see much beyond that.

A psychedelic sea of lurid reds and a clunking monarch butterfly cannot save this superficially observed and carelessly executed bland banality

the first thing it made me think of is the cover to Yoko Ono's 2001 album Blueprint for a Sunrise (which is a re-coloured version of a Hubert Vos portrait of the Chinese Empress Dowager Cixi)

the painting isnt good as art but its better than a lot of portraiture of important people at depicting a human face

i dont know much abt art but i meme what i meme

mark s, Thursday, 16 May 2024 09:19 (one month ago) link

as a study of a semi-human form it would be fair to say Yeo is no Lucien Freud, but he get's the commission and he gets the cheque. It's getting hung in the Drapers' Hall (some centuries old bullshit City of London charity foundation) so at least it wont hanging next to anything I like.

UK standards are at rock bottom, maybe some ppl feel like it's the closest worldly experience to shagging Princess Diana by proxy or something.
