connections: never heard of threading or b-school. i'd say vitamin b but there is this so okay i guess... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B_vitamins

ledge, Monday, 3 June 2024 08:02 (three weeks ago) link

I got the first one as part of my first group, it's pretty well-known I'd say? The second, I only got that group by what was left at the end and thought the same.

kinder, Monday, 3 June 2024 08:04 (three weeks ago) link

Yeah, thought purple was pretty crap today.

Overly dramatic elevator music (Dan Peterson), Monday, 3 June 2024 11:13 (three weeks ago) link

Purple was a shrug emoji. glad didn’t actually need to name the category

that's not my post, Monday, 3 June 2024 14:16 (three weeks ago) link

Purple was very dumb today but yellow was pretty straightforward, I thought

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Monday, 3 June 2024 17:08 (three weeks ago) link

ok connections tomorrow's purple will be D -

that's not my post, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 15:08 (three weeks ago) link

I'm hoping one of the words tomorrow will be Beat.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 4 June 2024 16:42 (three weeks ago) link

I got purple but my connection was places where men flex

sarahell, Thursday, 6 June 2024 17:32 (two weeks ago) link

I did have to laugh at this Connections category yesterday: Feeling Some Type of Way

Overly dramatic elevator music (Dan Peterson), Monday, 10 June 2024 12:45 (two weeks ago) link

today's purple was very esoteric, what "cross" might mean, I only got it because it was left over

Dan S, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 00:50 (two weeks ago) link

Today's Connections was a bit of a head-scratcher but I got it with 2 mistakes left.

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 06:30 (two weeks ago) link

I thought the Connections was very straightforward today; my only hesitation was one category initially seemed to have six members so I had to ignore it at first while I built a couple of the others.

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 10:24 (two weeks ago) link

I've gotten into the habit of reading the comments after I do the NYT crossword, and the boomers do get testy when there's a contemporary pop-culture reference or bit of slang they've never heard.

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 20:05 (two weeks ago) link

Was a little surprised at MANGA as a clearly not English word in yesterday's wordle.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 20:54 (two weeks ago) link

yeah I tried it expecting to see "Not a word" but I couldn't think of anything else

frogbs, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 20:54 (two weeks ago) link

pretty lucky first guess I must admit

It's enough to put me off Wordle, not that anyone will notice, or, if they
did, care.

something poignant about this one

Platinum Penguin Pavilion (soref), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:18 (two weeks ago) link

Was a little surprised at ***** as a clearly not English word in yesterday's wordle.

― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:54 (twenty-six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

It's a fairly recent loanword, but it's in the dictionary, so it's an English word as much as "coffee" or "pundit" or sth like half of our language is.

Thinking about Nikki now saving herself two hours a night xp

What the hell was her process for doing Wordle?

groovypanda, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:26 (two weeks ago) link

TY to the person that mentioned WordAll, it's a fun extension of the wordle concept.

that's not my post, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 21:36 (two weeks ago) link

camaraderie otm

I admit I was a little surprised that NYT editors selected it, but it's absolutely valid. Certainly no less so than SUSHI, which was the word back in November.

The "lol" at the end kills me

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 22:00 (two weeks ago) link

my 70-something year old father in law had never heard of it but managed to suggest it through a process of elimination (and a series of non-words).

he doesn't use a phone or laptop so my MIL does it first then he does it in pencil and she marks up each turn. He's really good, and determined with it. when I was staying there, I think it was VOILA which he also struggled with but got eventually in a similar way ("is there such a word as....?")

kinder, Tuesday, 11 June 2024 22:19 (two weeks ago) link

I feel like manga as a word gets more use in the USA than Adieu does.

jbn, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 00:15 (two weeks ago) link

Connections fun today - found it easy when I stopped thinking about the actual films . I got the yellow group last because I hadn't realised one of those was one of that.

kinder, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 12:05 (two weeks ago) link

i got them in perfect order (purple first, etc) without trying and yep same with yellow.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 13:16 (two weeks ago) link

I didn't get any of them because I kept making wrong guesses based on thinking about the actual films. You lot are too clever for me.

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 13:22 (two weeks ago) link

I did spend a while thinking what could possibly connect them as films, and coming up with nothing.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 13:35 (two weeks ago) link

oops spoiler alert

ledge, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 13:35 (two weeks ago) link

Enh, that’s not much of a spoiler imo. I thought today’s was a fun gimmick.

The transparently flimsy and misleading (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 14:09 (two weeks ago) link

Some people hate being confronted with things they don't know because they don't like the idea of their ignorance being exposed (though they still might complain loudly about it and thus remove all doubt thereof). I know that I've done something similar in the last with crosswords.

Connections today purposely designed to drive film buffs crazy

that's not my post, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 14:37 (two weeks ago) link

I am stunned I've made it to nearly 50 and didn't realise Dumbo was a place name in NYC.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 15:01 (two weeks ago) link

Some people hate being confronted with things they don't know because they don't like the idea of their ignorance being exposed

And likely more so when they think of themselves as a smart, cultured person who reads the New York Times.

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 June 2024 15:07 (two weeks ago) link

They 100% should have inverted the colors on the Connections today

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 17:05 (two weeks ago) link

xps yeah, Dumbo was the main reason I didn't get a perfect score today ... had no clue how that one slotted

Rich E. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 17:06 (two weeks ago) link

(Also, I was today years old when I learned that the Connections colors are ranked by difficulty.)

Rich E. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 17:07 (two weeks ago) link

I got the last one by process of elimination and was like “that’s not a thing!” for an indignant five minutes before some dormant synapse fired off a dim memory and I went “oh yeah, that is a thing”

Cemetry Gaetz (DJP), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 17:10 (two weeks ago) link

it still annoys me that the colour order is essentially arbitrary?

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 12 June 2024 18:36 (two weeks ago) link

Another very US-centric entry today.

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Friday, 14 June 2024 07:28 (one week ago) link

yeah would never have got 2 of that group. luckily it was the last one left

kinder, Friday, 14 June 2024 09:16 (one week ago) link

Can you easily get the full range of 20 EU pencil grades in the US or is it generally limited to #0-#4? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil#Grading_and_classification

ledge, Friday, 14 June 2024 09:49 (one week ago) link

^ unless you buy a pencils specifically for drawing, pretty sure all the US pencils are #2 (whatever that equates to in the EU)

that's not my post, Friday, 14 June 2024 15:14 (one week ago) link

re todays purple (#369) i had 3/4 early (jeter gave me a good guess, found deputy and silver) and then spent about 30 seconds looking for some variation on the word "poo" to close it out

Ryan seaQuest (Will M.), Friday, 14 June 2024 20:01 (one week ago) link

don't think I can properly see the last 3 spoiler tag text

kinder, Friday, 14 June 2024 20:12 (one week ago) link

Said out loud by me earlier: what the fuck is a Derek Jeter? I'm fine with the article in there. Figured it was as likely to be a donut or a burger as anything else.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 14 June 2024 20:22 (one week ago) link

Yeah I only got that group by elimination and I really wish all of these puzzles would stop using fiercely US-centric sports examples all the damn time.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 15 June 2024 00:19 (one week ago) link

i understand the complaints, but . . . it *is* an american newspaper based in nyc (where derek jeter played for 20 years)

i mean if the sydney morning herald runs a puzzle featuring the late shane warne that's honestly to be expected?

i do wonder what proportion of the nyt games subscriptions are international tho. i'm sure they'll be happy to adjust if it means more money

mookieproof, Saturday, 15 June 2024 00:38 (one week ago) link

Yeah thats a fair point.
