"heatrisk" is a weird new one from NWS btw https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/heatrisk/.

What's a heatrisk do, mark a footnote about electrical storms?

Good luck USA

feel very lucky that most of the summer in the UK has been in the 60°F+ range at best recently, you'll never hear me complaining about dark grey skies and rain

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 17 June 2024 21:09 (one week ago) link

Until last week's rains we had 105+ heat indices two weeks ago in South Florida, unheard of this time of year.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 June 2024 21:11 (one week ago) link

i don't think i've ever felt 110 degrees. that must feel pretty hot.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 01:55 (one week ago) link

There's an old Frontline episode (I think it originally aired in 2000) where a climate denying scientist says even if it happens, global warming isn't a big deal because people prefer hot weather. Thought about that guy today and if he's still alive I hope he's f-ing roasting outside.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 17:45 (one week ago) link

i haven't gone outside today. probably pretty hot.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:21 (one week ago) link

My mom, who lives in the woods in NJ, texted to tell me it was 89 degrees near her yesterday but her little house wasn't hot enough to require the AC yet. Meanwhile, it was 47 degrees when I went out to pick up lunch (tacos al pastor). 47 degrees. In June. The heat in my apartment came on last night. Summer is gonna be about six weeks long here, I think - mid July to end of August, and it'll be snowing again by October.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:26 (one week ago) link

No reading by the pool for you.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:28 (one week ago) link

Thought about that guy today and if he's still alive I hope he's f-ing roasting outside.

He died in 2020:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Singer

From the Frontline episode:

FRED SINGER: We have to ask what are the impacts of a warmer climate? What is the impact on agriculture? The answer is, it's positive. It's good. What's the impact on forests of greater levels of CO2 and greater temperatures? It's good. What is the impact on water supplies? It's neutral. What is the impact on recreation? It's mixed. You get, on the one hand, perhaps less skiing. On the other hand, you get more sunshine and maybe better beach weather.

Let's face it, people like warmer climates. There's a good reason why much of the U.S. population is moving into sun belt, and not just people who are retiring.

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:34 (one week ago) link

Currently 32C with a "feels like" of 42C here (that's about 90F / 108F). I'm fine indoors for now, but I guess I'm going to have to install my window air conditioner tonight. I gotta go outside in a about 20 minutes to go pick up my kids from school (~10 minute walk), will report back.

silverfish, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:38 (one week ago) link

was outside a bit, can confirm that it is effing hot and humid. I smell bad now.

silverfish, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 23:13 (one week ago) link

Geniune question - you don't find it depressing?! I used to love rainy days but I'm at my fucking wits end here. This is not a summer. The sun was out for 1 hour yesterday and I was happy by the afternoon I was ready to sleep it all away again. This is just so miserable this year.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:27 (one week ago) link

I guess if you grow up here you're used to it. I used to defend UK weather but I stg the sun came out more 20 years ago. It completely sucks now. It's just so grim all the time.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:28 (one week ago) link

Not saying I'd rather be in a near 100 degree heatwave that's nuts/.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:29 (one week ago) link

We had a mostly really cool and grey June back in 2016 here in London and this feels like the worst one since that. Looking better next week though.

nashwan, Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:30 (one week ago) link

Extremes with nothing in between is pretty much the normal now and I'd rather it was grey/rainy and 20C than 40C+

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:36 (one week ago) link

I hate the heat BUT the humidity here is the the worst part of “summer”, easily. Would rather a dry 30C than a humid 22C any day.

Roman Anthony gets on his horse (gyac), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:43 (one week ago) link

I don't mind the 20C at all. I like cool weather. It's the grey/rainy part that has been really tough for me.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:49 (one week ago) link

Agree with the humidity though. It is by far the worst part.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:49 (one week ago) link

Hate hot weather but today is a bit too cold for June, yesterday was fine when I was out at lunchtime.

Blood On Santa's Claw (Tom D.), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:51 (one week ago) link

It hardly ever rains in London anyway, it could do with some

Blood On Santa's Claw (Tom D.), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:51 (one week ago) link

????

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:52 (one week ago) link

xps to ENBB

there was a stunning thunderstorm here yesterday, the heaviest rain I've seen in a long time - it was awesome - the kind of weather that makes me happy. Hot sunny days make me lethargic and long sustained periods of hot summer weather (thankfully a rarity in the UK) always seem to coincide with periods of depression, and heatwaves are an absolute nightmare to me, torture. That 40° + day a couple of years back, I had all the curtains drawn and windows shut and was just about coping with a fan cooling me and then I had to do some cooking and didn't have a microwave at the time. lol, I was on the verge of crying.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:54 (one week ago) link

Yesterday had more than 1hr of sun but it was all in the AM - luckily I was on Hampstead Heath supervising a whippet zoom call, so got vitamin D and endorphins.

I’m going to Washington and Annapolis in about 10 days to see friends and part of me is dreading the extremes of heat and humidity.

guillotine vogue (suzy), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 10:15 (one week ago) link

London is a pretty dry in comparison to a lot of other capital cities. Certainly in comparison to other cities in the UK.

Blood On Santa's Claw (Tom D.), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 10:15 (one week ago) link

They must be unbearable.

Xpost - it might have even more than an hour but not much. I only got an hour in it cause I was working. By noon it was grey again.

I'm with everyone on the heat - I just miss the sun.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 10:48 (one week ago) link

Yeah idk it's getting to 20-21 deg pretty regularly. Some thunderstorms, some cloud cover, but the sun peeking through every now and then. That's June weather isn't it? July and August are suppoed to be the hot months.

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 10:51 (one week ago) link

No, I know. Hopefully not too hot. We were just having a convo at work about how dreary to feels like spring/early summer have been so I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. Maybe the sun is planning big things for those months.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 11:00 (one week ago) link

It feels like it has been a pretty grotty year in the UK. I know it's always unsettled but it feels particularly unsettled this year. We will usually have had at least a couple of periods of extended high pressure by now. Ugh.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 11:07 (one week ago) link

Yeah that's how it's seemed to me.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 11:16 (one week ago) link

I have mostly been in the US during the most recent UK heatwaves, but we haven’t had a wet June like this for years! This time last year, we were sweltering.

guillotine vogue (suzy), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 11:40 (one week ago) link

Last year we had a good May-June, garbage July-August and a finally some days over 30C in September. Most of Europe seems to be having a fairly normal one so far tbh.

Brutal heat... New Delhi, India 🇮🇳 just recorded its hottest night on record at the Safdarjung Observatory (data since 1901).

The heatwave has been rewriting many records. New Delhi has hit 40°C or greater for 37 consecutive days now. pic.twitter.com/eTkzwIpGkD

All of the current “thinking” on immigration and the role of government is going to be very outdated.. maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of our lives

it's been 17 years and i still cannot get over gregg easterbrook's (atlantic, obviously) feature wondering aloud who will 'win' and who will 'lose' global warming

sure, a billion people in south asia and africa might die, but think of the opportunities created by an ice-free arctic! shipping costs could be slashed in half!

mookieproof, Thursday, 20 June 2024 02:33 (six days ago) link

this forecast for tomorrow just makes me think the entire town is going to disappear in a cloud of steam.

"Scattered showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 102. Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."

scott seward, Thursday, 20 June 2024 03:57 (six days ago) link

something that doesn't bode well for me. i was out today a little bit and i REALLY don't like breathing in extremely hot air. it has gotten worse as i have aged. it never used to bother me much. i don't know if it has anything to do with being a smoker for so many years. my lungs are healthy. it just really makes me breathe heavy and takes the wind out of me in a way that it never used to. maybe that's why Walgreens sells little portable oxygen tanks now.

scott seward, Thursday, 20 June 2024 04:01 (six days ago) link

Its here. Mini heatwave this week. Curtains closed.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 24 June 2024 09:39 (two days ago) link

Its just over 30C for a couple of days, so nothing much in the grand scheme of things but summer has definitely got going now

xyzzzz__, Monday, 24 June 2024 10:09 (two days ago) link

i'm pretty sure it was 100% humidity yesterday. it was so gross. also we got a tornado warning.

scott seward, Monday, 24 June 2024 11:54 (two days ago) link

it's raining here tomorrow and "mini-heatwave" is forecasted to be over by wednesday and it doesn't get any hotter than mid 20's in the north.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Monday, 24 June 2024 11:57 (two days ago) link

The app I use is giving an average high of only 27C in central London this week but it's a different model they use, I expect it will go a little higher here and there.

nashwan, Monday, 24 June 2024 12:05 (two days ago) link
