The only reason I came close to getting yesterday's video game question right is because of the ILX thread that is frequently in Site New Answers, but I answered ... Elder Ring. D'oh.

If my math is right, I think I clinched promotion?! I better prepare myself emotionally to getting murdered in A in a few months!

Congrats! I look forward to facing you next season.

I'm not sure I share your enthusiasm lol.

Hope most of you got the Gullah/Geechee question.

I just looked up jaymc's branch and noticed that B's winner is another referral. And ugh, I'm going to have to play them again next season lol.

Blame yourself: He was referred by the person you referred. :)

How did everyone's seasons turn out? After finding myself in 1st place midway through the season, I lost 6 of the last 7 matches, winding up in 11th with a record of 11-11-3. This feels like my natural place in the order of things.

But I did finish 1st in LL98, so I'll be playing in the championship later this summer.

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 17:15 (three months ago) link

my season was rough, as mentioned above. i had a lot of bad/unlucky defense days, and the rare days where i did reasonably well (ie 4-5 questions right) i would inevitably tie instead of win. i finally had a good win on the penultimate day that briefly pushed me out of the relegation range but then i'm pretty sure my loss on the last day pushed me back down. it didn't seem like a harder season in terms of questions, but maybe i was less focused than usual.

na (NA), Wednesday, 26 June 2024 17:48 (three months ago) link

That's rough luck, NA -- I only had 3 more CA than you but 8 fewer TCAs despite being in B.

So yeah, going to A next season, but I've been stewing in some self-loathing for fumbling in the last MD because I desperately want to break 100 TCA, and for the second season in a row I've finished at 99.

Rough-ish season, finishing in the last place above relegation – but somehow I always had enough points' margin that it never really got sweaty. Happy to have avoided the yoyoing for a few seasons.

Don't forget to submit on the first day of the Film Production ML if you signed up for it.

that one looked fun, but I didn't have time for it.

I am surprised at how well I am doing in the California ML for someone who has never lived there.

LOL you're in first while I, a lifelong Californian, am only in 3rd.

jaymc, Friday, 6 September 2024 13:47 (three weeks ago) link

Thanks, for that question I realize that I've only ever read up on composting and not fertilizers, so instead went with carbon. I was a little surprised to see that you missed the French question, though I may have fallen into the "If I know it, most people know it" trap?

Oedipal Issues, Adipose Tissues (Leee), Friday, 6 September 2024 16:46 (three weeks ago) link

Yes that trap is an extremely common one, for me anyway.

I have heard of the title dauphin, but would not have been able to tell you what it referred to. I figured the answer had to be "Prince of" something, which I completed with "Versailles."

jaymc, Friday, 6 September 2024 21:43 (three weeks ago) link

So TIMOTHY and especially MARAT/SADE

i was just looking at ‘the aesthetics of resistance’ on monday night and had not previously known anything at all about peter weiss!

did not get timothy tho

mookieproof, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 15:42 (two weeks ago) link

Not sure how I knew timothy, tbh -- I went through some men's names and it vaguely rang a bell.

Ended up with a Buckner tie, 5(4)-5(2), because I assigned my opponent a 0 on multitudes (second-easiest question of the day), a 1 on Antarctica (easiest question of the day), and a 1 on Marat/Sade (he has a .781 in Theatre), and he missed all of them, but got the Spain and golf questions right.

jaymc, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 15:56 (two weeks ago) link

That's quite a coincidence, because I got 3 for multitudes, and my opponent missed it despite a 0.600+ Literature score. And today's opponent, with a Literature score in the high 0.800s, also missed it. Meanwhile, the entirety of our rundle went 84% on it.

Oedipal Issues, Adipose Tissues (Leee), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 17:19 (two weeks ago) link

never heard of timothy grass in my life

i have heard of marat/sade but would never have pulled it

i did feel slightly dumb for not getting dauphin once i saw the answer but again i doubt i ever would have remembered it

I've encountered him several times over the years, suffice to say I defriended him on Facebook quite some time ago and he's generally edged himself out to the furthest fringes of the bits of the international quiz community I frequent.
