I have hated Sean Penn for probably close to 35 years at this point. It's incredible that a guy with exactly one good performance in one movie ever (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) has been able to hang around annoying so many people for so long. A real testament to...something.

he looks insane now. like one of popeye's testicles.

fast times, bad boys, carlito's way. that's it for me. wait, at close range. and that's it. wait, no, racing with the moon is sweet. okay, i do have a nostalgic fondness for the falcon and the snowman. but that's really it. basically he didn't suck in the 80s.

he should have been put in prison for I Am Sam. and the horrible movies he directed.

wait, he was in U Turn? i loved that movie. forgot he was in it.

I thought he was good in Sweet and Lowdown also, but I can't be bothered with anything Woody Allen-related anymore.

I would have agreed until I learned he personally funds a boat that rescues refugees in the Mediterranean in the face of threats from various governments and their tame fascist shitheads.

he considers himself an endlessly fascinating and deeply perceptive person, and he's his own fave subject. But please just fuck off and die, Nick.

A friend (who's a middle-aged divorced dad) credits his book with getting him through his divorce and bought me a copy, but I just don't care and will not be reading it.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 12 August 2024 14:46 (one month ago) link

since he came out as a royalist, the BBC can't get enough of him expounding at great length about Nick Cave. I'm even quicker to the off switch than when The Archers theme comes on when I hear that twat talking.

"I would have agreed until I learned he personally funds a boat that rescues refugees in the Mediterranean in the face of threats from various governments and their tame fascist shitheads."

its the least he can do to make up for his annoying art and the stupid money he has made off of it. damien hirst and jeff koons should have an entire flotilla out there!

also something i don't care about: rich people's philanthropy. just give your money away and leave us out of it. if you are an artist, design your own medal and then give it to yourself.

scott seward, Monday, 12 August 2024 15:34 (one month ago) link

I can relate to people like that. If I were that rich I'd rather have control over how it was spent than to just shovel it away. It's better than philanthropy as tax write-off.

Idk if it’s what set off the post but last weekend Banksy just did something above the chippy at the end of my brother’s road…

And the chip shop owners are on holiday and haven’t been able to enjoy being a flash in the pan tourist attraction.

at least he hasn't got the insufferable public persona like with Hirst in the 90's. Being portrayed as a genius by clueless heels, accompanied with pics of his practised intense artist mugging.

Strangely enough you don't seem to get minute-by-minute updates on the rescue/salvage operation when an overloaded vessel full of asylum seekers sinks in the Mediterranean.

Was thinking exactly the same thing this morning. Still the media obviously love a rich people in peril at sea story and we haven't had one since that submarine imploded.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Tuesday, 20 August 2024 12:50 (one month ago) link

at least it's an upbeat story: one millionaire dead and the other 5 likely entombed in the sunken yacht and either dead or asphyxiating in a tiny air pocket and waiting to die 🤭

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Tuesday, 20 August 2024 19:12 (one month ago) link

I've actually become quite boringly fascinated with this yacht story. Not that I give a toss about the billionaire or the JP Morgan chairman that were drowned. Just interested in how a luxury superyacht that gets leased to billionaires can take 60 seconds to sink. The speculation is now on the recessed lounge area where hatches and doors were apparently not shut or locked, and apparently let a fatal volume of water flood the yacht very quickly.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 23 August 2024 09:41 (one month ago) link

I can't hear about this story without thinking of the Raymond Luxury-Yacht Monty Python sketch.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Friday, 23 August 2024 09:52 (one month ago) link

The main billionaire dude had the creepiest face. I'm also fascinated but also for the same reasons calzino is but they can shut up about it now and just let us know what happened once they figure it out.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 23 August 2024 09:58 (one month ago) link

I did not follow that story closely, but can't quite countenance "lol rich people in peril" glee, as there was, like, a baby involved

Jedi, I've got your number (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 23 August 2024 16:35 (one month ago) link

it was more like "lol rich ppl certainly dead" in this case, but like with the titan sub, the media classes don't want to believe that rich ppl can die as easily as migrants on fragile overcrowded boats can. And the fawning UK media coverage around the creepy egghead billionaire has been so intensely sickmaking, that I'm affording myself a cruel lol. Yes of course it's not all good - the chef perished as well, but at least most of the crew scarpered out that luxury tomb in time!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 23 August 2024 16:59 (one month ago) link

another hilarious thing is one of the associates of the billionaire, who had managed (totally against the odds) to win a civil fraud case in the US against them a few weeks back. He got run over by a car and died last week.

mark s, Friday, 23 August 2024 17:35 (one month ago) link

John Gummer was saying it was a disgrace that the UK govt allowed them to be extradited to the US. I don't know much about the case other than it was probably serious shit in terms of them risking jail time and he didn't plea bargain and somehow they won it. But then came... The Forces

mark s, Friday, 23 August 2024 17:59 (one month ago) link

as there are still nutty sleuthers out there who believe Jay Slater was murdered then this one will have legs as well. That the crew got off the boat so fast will be a conspiracy part. I genuinely feel sorry for the crew who survived, because when a billionaire or two dies on your watch you've got hell on.

I read something about a heavy, retractable keel, and if that keel hadn't been retracted there's no way the boat wouldn't have fallen over

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 23 August 2024 20:01 (one month ago) link

but yeah, considering how many boats sinks and lives are lost in the Mediterranean each year, the hyper-focus on this vessel seems a little overblown

yeah it only needs to be raised in shallow waters and this was in 150 meters of water, so the captain is probably in deep shit here.
