I'm trying to think if I have a party persona ... as opposed to me, only louder and more talkative

― free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Monday, August 17, 2009 2:37 PM (2 days ago

okay, my drunk at party persona is definitely me + higher volume + faster tempo + more shit-talking + will continue telling the story until it's "totally hilarious" conclusion no matter who is listening or who is trying to get a word in edgewise ... could be worse

GQ has voted my alma mater the #1 douchiest college

lol @ 3 out of top 4 being ivy. usc should ahve been higher imo

velko, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the fact that Yale isn't in the list is significant

what happened? i am confused. (sarahel), Friday, 28 August 2009 22:22 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah usc is top 5 no doubt

are brown people really that douchey?

iatee, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:23 (fourteen years ago) link

haha 'brown people'

iatee, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:23 (fourteen years ago) link

hating on harvard is too easy, princeton more deserving of class-based ire. i don't have any neg associations re: brown other than ancient semiotics lolz. also dartmouth prob more worthy of random ivy hatred

velko, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:25 (fourteen years ago) link

dartmouth seems the most date-rapey of all the ivy league

velko, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I could see someone interpreting the "new curriculum" as douchey and its implication that "Our students are too good for general ed requirements." Honestly, that's half the reason I went there. Probably the douchiest class I took was statistics for social science majors where most of the class were preppy business majors, only the major was called something else.

Yale's pretty easy to hate on, too, which is why I think it's telling it's not on the list. Posh Ivy League school in the middle of a slum, and all that. George W Bush went there, ffs. I went to a party at Yale once, and it was douche central, it was called "The Pump and Slipper Ball"

i've had better experience with yalies but i went to school in the 80s (at a non-douchey ivy). school "types" do change somewhat over the years.

i can't remember, does cornell get zinged for hotel management or agriculture programs, or both?

velko, Friday, 28 August 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

otoh, I'm on this regional alumni list, and some guy posted about wanting to sell his multi-million dollar home including a vineyard, and the posts in response were divided between polite accusations of douchitude and "he's just a guy wanting to sell his great home." All of the official alumni activities in the region seem seriously douchey.

cornell gets lots of sheep-fucking jokes.

princeton as the jockiest of the good ivies is by a long shot home to the largest concentration of douchebags on this coast

sarahel: recommend a restaurant in oakland/berkeley for us to try out tonight, one that has decent vegan options (please)

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Sunday, 6 September 2009 00:01 (fourteen years ago) link

current options, by order of preference for tonight:
1. golden lotus (solely vegan vietnamese)
2. flavors of india (great indian but been going there a lot)
3. herbivore (would have to go to the one in berkeley, which is shit compared to the sf one)
4. pasta pomodoro on college in rockridge (but jordan eats pasta every day for lunch, so he'd rather not)

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Sunday, 6 September 2009 00:05 (fourteen years ago) link

now we're thinking of maybe going to souley vegan. sarahel have you been there?

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Sunday, 6 September 2009 00:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't ... I have eaten at:

Golden Lotus - pretty tasty, even to someone who eats meat and fish

Herbivore - yeah, some of their stuff in Berkeley location is good, but definitely not all ... I think I had some soup there (might have been lentil or split pea) that was great, and the polenta w/mushroom gravy is fine, though I end up adding plenty of salt to it. The cocktails are pretty great, though.

Neither me or the bf are vegan (he's vegetarian, I was vegetarian briefly, then spent about 8 years as vegetarian + fish, and am now back to eating meat), so I'm not super knowledgeable about vegan restaurants. I do have several friends who are vegan, and off the top of my head - places the vegan friends like to eat besides those mentioned above:

Manzanita Restaurant (i think it's also macrobiotic or something) - on the Oakland/emeryville border
Lanesplitter's on telegraph will make vegan pizza
Rudy's Can't Fail Café has a good number of vegan options
Fellini's in Berkeley will make things vegan for you if you ask (fairly pricey - we'll go there for special occasions like birthdays and such or the periodic "romantic dinner")

Have you considered Ethiopian food as an option? I think the vegetable dishes are vegan. There are plenty of yummy Ethiopian places in Oakland.

My worst roommate at Brown - who actually helped me get over a particularly vicious bout of self-loathing freshman year by being even more loathsome than I found myself to be - had a bunch of friends at Dartmouth. They were pretty much wealthy preppy types that liked to ski and drink a lot.

crabRCISE (gbx), Sunday, 6 September 2009 21:08 (fourteen years ago) link

the people that i know who went there are extremely preppy and conservative (not conservative politically, just people without anything remotely "alternative" about them). but nice!

velko, Sunday, 6 September 2009 21:11 (fourteen years ago) link

^^ yeah, that's pretty much what her friends were like ...

I don't want to imply that I believe everyone who went to Dartmouth was like that ...

yeah we read about that macrobiotic place, it seemed a bit much. the vegan soul food place was... interesting. ytth loved it but i thought it was meh. but then i've never had real soul food either. he digs ethiopian but i feel like it's probably too spicy for me. also i am the world's worst/fussiest eater :/

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Monday, 7 September 2009 01:04 (fourteen years ago) link

the vegetable dishes in ethiopian food aren't all that spicy ... it's the meat that is.

what happened? i am confused. (sarahel), Monday, 7 September 2009 01:08 (fourteen years ago) link

i've never thought of the meat as overly spicy, either!
