Went to Nick's Crispy Tacos last night. Pretty good, though it would've been better if I was drunk. Off to the ballgame now.

I'll be in the Bay Area from the evening of the 17th to the morning of the 21st, if anyone wants to meet up. I haven't been to Pac Bell yet, so a Marlins-Giants game on Tues or Wed is in store hopefully. Haven't thought about hotel yet...are there recommendations for something not too insanely priced? Either side of the bay is okay -- nearness to BART is a plus for East Bay, obv.

Wait, sorry, I forgot to specify -- the 17th-21st of August. I'm going to be in Sacramento on a work trip to the CA State Fair for a few days beforehand.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I will be in Chicago that week.

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

where's alex?

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 July 2008 20:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd be surprised if Tracy can make it (twins are a handful) but maybe she can get the day off or something

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 July 2008 20:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I's here and normally I would try to go, but I seriously cannot take any more time off work. Jen might be up for it though.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Jen is up for it (and since she's currently studenting she gets the cheap rate woo hoo) and just registered. Are you going, Steve?

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I predict Steve gets a bunch of people to buy tickets but then mysteriously does not show up himself

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Hahaha it's TU LANG all over again.

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes! I am definitely going!

Steve Shasta, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Steve Shasta, Friday, 18 July 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Alright I finally looked at the menu and decided fuck it this is what I have PTO for and I registered. Too amazing looking to pass up.

Steve Shasta, Friday, 18 July 2008 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link

OK, we're booked at the Cathedral Hill Hotel.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link

On Van Ness?

Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:14 (fifteen years ago) link

rock, looks like im missing you by half a day!

phil-two, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Michael, yes. It was recommended on another SF thread and seems like a very nice place for the price!

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

What are our transport options to get from Sacramento to SF on a Sunday afternoon/evening?

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Car rental? Train? Plane? Bus?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Rock, it's across from Tommy's Joynt and not far from Polk Street.

Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Amtrak, Rock.

Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Excellent, multiple trains to choose from. I'm not exactly sure when we'll get free from the fair on Sunday.

I stuck my head in Tommy's one day when I was in the city for a concert, decided not to eat there. Can't remember why.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Cheap drinks, though and the au jus was a childhood favorite.

Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:07 (fifteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

We don't really have much of an agenda for our stay in SF, other than meeting Michael and any other ILXors who want to meet up, good eats, good drinks, cool weather, a Giants game... Anybody have any must-see or must-do recommendations?

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I am holding out on plans because I may have to go to Vega$ but I will let you know the sitch as it develops.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

What are you into Rock? Museums? Movies? Shopping?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:59 (fifteen years ago) link

There are plenty of neat museums (MOMA--with a Frida Kahlo exhibit, the Cartoon Art Museum, MOAD, the Contemporary Jewish Museum--which I've not been to, Yerba Buena Center usually has an exhibit) all within a block or so of 3rd and Mission. The new De Young in Golden Gate Park is pretty nice too and the park itself is nice to walk or bike (if you want to rent one.)

For movies it's always worth checking the listings for the Castro, Red Vic, Roxie, or the Yerba Buena Center (again). The SF Bay Guardian has decent listings for movies or theater or shows or what not. Flavorpill SF is also dead useful.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 22:01 (fifteen years ago) link

wife just went with the wee one to the Frida Kahlo exhibit today - will report back later

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 22:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Museums yes, movies quite possibly, shopping not as much, though I may go to Amoeba briefly. I had forgotten about the Cartoon Art Museum -- I'd like to go there if we have time. I never made the time for it on previous visits to the city.

I've been keeping half an eye on Pollstar for the last couple of months, but nothing concertwise has grabbed me.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 00:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I just got back from San Fran. Tiburon is HORRIBLE and that crazy crooked street is HORRIBLE and Haight-Ashbury is HORRIBLE and Fisherman's Wharf is alright.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

You went to Hooters, didn't you?

libcrypt, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I wish. Hooters would've been awesome compared to, say, the fucking shitty upper class patio bar that I went to in Tiburon that cost a gazillion dollars. I'm also fucking pissed that I didn't have a chance to go to an In-n-Out Burger, which I really really wanted to go to after I saw that ILX "Favorite fast food restaurant" poll a couple months back where In-n-Out Burger won in a landslide and a half. But even if I did, it probably would've still ended up being puked back up at the side of the road because everybody got carsick because we weren't used to those crazy twisty-turny California roads on our way up to Mendocino. Fuck California.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

lol tourists

jaxon, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 06:44 (fifteen years ago) link

California is sorry that yr trip went so bad. If California could offer you a full refund, California would do so, with no hesitation.

California is very sorry that you will never ever ever ever be returning to California.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 06:51 (fifteen years ago) link

wife just went with the wee one to the Frida Kahlo exhibit today - will report back later

Frida Kahlo exhibit was ok; a little boxy in the presentation with eveybody more inclined to listen to their audio guides and shuffle around the rooms' perimeters like drones, but still full of pleasant surprises. The Lee Miller exhibit on the second floor was awesome, though.

Michael White, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link

every special exhibit i've ever gone to at sfmoma has been like that, it must be the floor that stuff is on.

akm, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link

hey dudes, my gf and i are coming out to SF next friday for ten days, aug15-24. id love to hang with everyone! we're gonna rent a car and drive to arcata for a couple days, but otherwise, no real plans, except vague plans to get crazed about records, play some scrabble, eat delicious food, and go to the beach.

so dudes, lets hang.
