The trucking missions with three stars are kind of a pain in the ass. Particularly the one to Los Santos Docks, wher I learned the hard way that while the oil tanker will fit under the tunnel to the west of Verdant Bluffs, other truck loads aren't so lucky.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 3 December 2004 01:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Oooh, nice tip.

Those three-star missions are so dorky. As soon as you pull into the red circle, the helicopter flys away, the cops stop shooting and walk off, the cars turn off their lights... and there's CJ, same ol' gangsta standing next to the same ol' illegal eighteen-wheeler.

Oooh, I just realized that they need to make a Smokey & The Bandit game, set in the Carter-era mid south.

I happened to save this thread on the 17th. Let's see if it'll let me repost the deleted messages...

I just got the spoiler for the next edition: GTA: Rwanda.

i just want to say.

this thread is the first one from which i got a real sense of community on ILX. for sure homies!!

my current look:

black hoodie
black khakis
black hat
black sneakers
red tint glasses
big silver chain

I'm liking san fierro

-- Porkpie (porkypi...), December 3rd, 2004 1:56 AM. (porkpie)
the final trucking mission gives you a 4 star wanted level, i have yet to do this one. its a real c**t

I like the way PP solved the bigfoot rumour that seems to have got so many avid GTA explorers in a tizzy, with one sweet abrupt response.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 1:57 AM. (Fuzzy)
I'm wearing a biker jacket with jeans shorts, a red beret, and knee-length snakeskin boots. No wonder Sweet thought I'd gone soft.

-- Dom Passantino (juror...), December 3rd, 2004 2:00 AM. (Dom Passantino)
When in San Fierro: white vest, leopard cowboy hat, boxing boots, Africa pendant, red shades, black boxers.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 3rd, 2004 2:04 AM. (afarrell)
i hate the way that it leaves you with the cycle shorts after you've attempted bike missions.

has anyone noticed the street dealers? I saw a car stop next to one and someone got out, did a deal, and got back in the car again. I shot the dealer (who tried to shoot me back) and there was loads of cash on the floor.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 2:13 AM. (Fuzzy)
the dealers are the single easiest way to get money in the game. there seem to be a grillion of them after you start the gang wars, whereas earlier there are only occasional ones.

one of the damn fools was on grove street itself the other day, he lasted all of a quarter of a second before i blew his head off...

-- CarsmileSteve (carsmilestev...), December 3rd, 2004 3:17 AM. (CarsmileSteve)
when I approach a dealer it always asks me to respond positively or negatively, but whichever button I press always seems to be a negative response. whats with that?

the crafty Ballas are persistantly trying to win back the old train yard area, mad fckers.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 3:25 AM. (Fuzzy)
you can do kind of a circuit at the toip of grove street, where there's a cross shaped alleyway with a police bribe. They just keep re-spawning and you can make shedloads.

zero's air raid mission though? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

-- Porkpie (porkypi...), December 3rd, 2004 3:28 AM. (porkpie)
and Zero with his whiney voice on the last mission, i wanted to drop the bloody bomb on him instead.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 3:48 AM. (Fuzzy)
"oh shitski"

how goes it my sibling?

aaarrrgggghhhh

Can I shoot him?

i) trying to get all gold at the driving school is a soul-destroyingly awful experience
ii) i kind of want to kill david cross now. I know he didn't actually design his missions, but it would be a symbolic gesture.

-- \(^o^)/ (adelangston@hotmail.com), December 3rd, 2004 5:33 AM. (Adrian Langston)
Trying to get all gold at pilot school is something else entirely. City Slicking feels like a walk in the park compared to Circle Airstrip.

What's up with that one part of San Fierro Harbor that you can't fly too near without getting a five-star wanted level? I was merely descending to collect my daily loot from Wang Cars and received a surface-to-air missile for my trouble.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 3rd, 2004 5:38 AM. (dayan)
city slicking i think i can beat given enough time. the one that kills me is the burn and lap, it seems physically impossible to finish in 35 seconds or less. my powerslides are PERFECT and yet i can never do better than an 8 second lap. i'm gonna destroy my controller soon :(

-- \(^o^)/ (adelangston@hotmail.com), December 3rd, 2004 6:17 AM. (Adrian Langston)
Its a naval base, you do a mission on the aircraft carrier later on.

i hate the alley roll mission at the driving school.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 6:21 AM. (Fuzzy)
Are Zero's missions essential to the storyline? Cause they annoy the shit out of me.

-- 57 7th (midlothia...), December 3rd, 2004 6:49 AM. (calstars)
the first one is.

-- Big Baby Bingo (formerlypoopsmcge...), December 3rd, 2004 6:51 AM. (Chris V)
if you don't complete them you'll be left with that big smug 'Z' on your radar all the time just to remind you of how weak you are

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 6:54 AM. (Fuzzy)
But they suck...I finished the first one after two tries, but I can't be hassled with that fucking toy plane. Why did R* configure all the controls differently for it? What a pain in the ass.
So I can just continue on now, having done the first one?

-- 57 7th (midlothia...), December 3rd, 2004 6:59 AM. (calstars)
As Ken C said above, this also one of my favorite threads. I try not to talk about Grove Street so much with my friends, family, and co-workers.

The whole Bigfoot thing is just another example of some of the numb reactions I have to San Andreas. I remember playing Super Mario Brothers one night long ago and hitting the "world" that had OMG FLYING TURTLES. And how crazy and shocked I was at that. (Seems like there's already a "Moments in video games that made you load your pants" thread somewhere on here.) This game has soooooo many moments like that already that when Sasquatch came along, I was just sitting there, thinking "Okay, all right... !"

This game has soooooo many moments like that already that when Sasquatch came along, I was just sitting there, thinking "Okay, all right... !"

I think the moment I realized that this wasn't like any other video game I'd ever played was after Green Sabre, when the game transitions to the Badlands chapter; I was in a completely alien environment, bereft of weapons, Denise, runnin' crew, and any sense of where I actually was. I drove around the hills on my Sanchez listening to Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day" and actually started to feel a little confused and betrayed, given the recent plot developments.

There's also a real difference between friends of mine who are obsessed with SA and friends of mine who are not. It absolutely builds community amongst its devotees, simply due to the sheer commitment that's involved in getting anywhere with it.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 3rd, 2004 7:44 AM. (dayan)
Yeah, I think the country areas are my favorite areas of the game, the biggest, most welcome surprise this time around.

-- 57 7th (midlothia...), December 3rd, 2004 7:49 AM. (calstars)
Daniel, OTM. The whole plot change totally threw me too. I'd never even contemplated how the other islands would figure into the game before that.

***********SPOILER ALERT ---- SPOILER ALERT************.....
My 'moment' in the game was after getting back to LS and the riots breaking out. Just wandering around the streets with fires blazing and peds running around with stolen tv's. choppers everywhere, cops being dragged out of cars. Amazing.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 3rd, 2004 8:13 AM. (Fuzzy)
I'm glad the bigfoot rumours are still going strong, the "I finished San Andreas and got 100% and gold in all the schools in 4 days and my cousin works at rockstar so I KNOW what's true and what isn't" people on the gta board I look at sometimes all seem to have gotten over it now and just swear at anyone who mentions it for lying. It'd be great if it was actually true. And it hasn't stopped me walking around Mount Chiliad on a misty day looking for it.

There's a popular rumour about a chainsaw weilding psycho that hangs around the Panopticon aswell. I've been trying to look for him too, but hearing a plane buzzing overhead usually scares me enough to run out of the place and nearly give me a heart attack. I may be taking this game a bit too seriously.

-- lupine lupin (lupinelupi...), December 3rd, 2004 11:18 AM. (lupinelupin)

when i finished vice city i had absolutely no desire to play the game ever again. whereas when i get more or less everything done in san andreas i'm totally going to play it from the beginning again.

but i have to give it a couple of months' break or i'll really lose my job

Does anyone know if the 'n.o.e.' mission is essential? Cause I finally passed 'Learning to Fly' but it took me hours and hours.

-- 57 7th (midlothia...), December 8th, 2004 6:37 AM. (calstars)
Does anyone know if the 'n.o.e.' mission is essential? Cause I finally passed 'Learning to Fly' but it took me hours and hours.

Yes (the airstrip missions are pretty essential, as it turns out), and it's not very hard at all if you think about it for a few minutes. Think about some alternate routes you could take.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 8th, 2004 7:49 AM. (dayan)
Congrats on passing the Learning To Fly mission, 57th. I'm still stuck on the "Circle Airstrip and Land" which is driving me crazy. Oh, and if anyone had problems finishing Circle Airstrip (like I did), then I recommend leaving the air strip for awhile. You get a number of calls from Toreno making fun of you for not getting your pilot's licence. They're kinda funny.

-- Jonathan (jonathan_m...), December 8th, 2004 8:29 AM. (Jonathan)
learn to fly, carl!

-- ken c (pykachu10...), December 8th, 2004 8:39 AM. (ken c)
remember you don't have to keep your finger on the throttle all the time, apart from when climbing. Descending increases your airspeed anyway. you dont need to keep moving the stick either, the plane will happily stay in a banking position for a while if you let go.
and landing just make sure you stop facing forward down the runway, othwerwise it will punish you on percentage. don't touch down too early or you will waste time taxiing up to the red finish blob.

xpost (haha ken exactly what i was thinking)

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 8th, 2004 8:43 AM. (Fuzzy)
'touch down'=wheels hitting the runway, not pressing the down button, btw.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 8th, 2004 8:46 AM. (Fuzzy)
its the damn driving school that's proving to be a pain for me. That stupid effing car in City Slicker drives like it's on ice.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 8th, 2004 8:51 AM. (Fuzzy)
Top tips for city slicker: cross across in front of the three towers, and one the way back there's a tiny gap just before the factory that you can use to get onto the rail tracks.

I can't believe I eventually got gold on the wheelie challenge.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 8th, 2004 8:59 AM. (afarrell)
I found that steering the plane mostly with the rudder (L2/R2) was the key to getting Circle Airstrip, since using the analog stick exclusively makes you much more prone to overcorrection, as Ste points out. Banking is a tough skill to learn, but it's much easier to complete the circle by using the rudder than it is the analog stick.

Also, going counterclockwise seems much easier, for whatever reason, than clockwise (in much the same fashion as Burn and Lap - going clockwise it's well-nigh impossible, but I actually got gold going counterclockwise). I still don't know quite how I managed to get gold on City Slicker, but the Hotknife is well worth the hours I spent in driving school.

Also, how great is Black Project? That might be my favorite GTA mission ever. It even made Green Goo and Architectural Espionage interesting by association. (Also please note that even after you've taken out the SAM installations in Area 69, fighter jets will still scramble and shoot you down if you pass over it. Whoops.)

Although I did steal and garage two FBI Ranchers as a result.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 8th, 2004 9:03 AM. (dayan)
i kept going on about how difficult alley oop was to my flat mate and how i'd attempted it a billion times to just get a bronze, he tried 3 times and then got a gold. bloody showoff.

my one and only FBI rancher boost attempt was spectacularly laughable at least, resulting in everybody on fire, fbi men burning to death, me laughing and getting in fbi car, realising that the car was wedged between two walls. result - peppered to death by hundreds more fbi men who didn't take kindly to me burning their colleagues.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 8th, 2004 9:13 AM. (Fuzzy)
My FBI Rancher boost, if I may brag, was genius. I flew over the restricted area in a stuntplane after Black Project, realized what I'd done, and got shot down. After parachuting down, there were Ranchers and FBI men waiting for me; I mowed them all down with my minigun, stole a passing motorcycle, and beat it like hell back to Verdant Meadows. Somehow I got into the AC tower and saved the game; when I came out, my wanted level was gone and the FBI men who'd assembled had disappeared from their Ranchers. I very casually drove them into the garage and parked them neatly next to my NRG-500.

I later attempted to do this again and failed spectacularly. I deeply, deeply wish you could bling out the FBI Ranchers.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 8th, 2004 9:29 AM. (dayan)
the positioning of the derelict runway save point makes it great for stealing tanks and garaging them. i only found out recently too that you could use the big hangar opposite the tower for saving planes

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 8th, 2004 9:33 AM. (Fuzzy)
zero's plane mission is infuriating! I shot all the fuckers and then it made me fly back to the shop and I ran out of time, all my other attempts resulted in pathetic failure after only shooting one or two guys.

and I really really REALLY hope this bigfoot/chainsaw psycho rumour is true! it wouldn't have been hard to do surely!

-- Ronan (ronan.fitzgerald6NOSPA...), December 8th, 2004 12:06 PM. (Ronan)
Re: Circle Airstrip and Land, I must have tried that mission 50 times at least before I passed. I even got so fed up I put the game up on ebay, giving up forever. Then the next morning I had second thoughts... The first few times I got through the coronas to the landing strip I didn't realize I had to put the landing gear down and was crashing and burning like crazy...Probably the most frustrating mission in GTA history.

-- 57 7th (midlothia...), December 8th, 2004 12:57 PM. (calstars)
I have high hopes for bigfoot and chainsaw blokey too. The people on the other boards who think the rumours are false, bear in mind that these people said the same thing about planes falling out of the sky just because they hadn't had it in their games, and thought they knew every detail of the game. I like the idea that Rockstar may have only made bigfoot visible on very misty days, so that the screenshots end up looking like real life bigfoot sightings and no one ever believes anyone.

N.O.E. took me around 3 hours (not in one go), and I was flying along what I thought was the easiest route. The probñem was spending 7 or 8 minutes on each mission attempt, then failing by being rubbish at landing.

-- lupine lupin (lupinelupi...), December 8th, 2004 1:33 PM. (lupinelupin)
I have found a few glitches. Most of them are harmless, just CJ's head going through walls and shit. However, I learned the hard way not to crowd my garage with motorcycles. I tried to get on one, got stuck standing on top of it, and couldn't get down. I wound up having to blow myself and the garage up.

(Yes, I could have just reloaded the game, but what fun is that?)

-- Pleasant Plains (acewhiske...), December 8th, 2004 2:22 PM. (Pleasant Plains)
Anyone else in favor of starting a new thread, vol 2? This mutha is a pain in the ass to load by now...

-- 57 7th (midlothia...), December 8th, 2004 4:00 PM. (calstars)
I was thinking of starting GTA threads based on Los Santos, San Fierro, or Las Venturas, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting out of hand with this game.

-- Pleasant Plains (acewhiske...), December 8th, 2004 4:16 PM. (Pleasant Plains)
today has been TRIUMPHANT!!! not only did i get all gold at driving school (i expected the hotknife to suck btw, but it's easily the best car in the game!!), but i completely pwned supply lines. I'm gonna go flex in front of the mirror now.

-- \(^o^)/ (adelangston@hotmail.com), December 8th, 2004 11:29 PM. (Adrian Langston)
zero's plane mission is infuriating! I shot all the fuckers and then it made me fly back to the shop and I ran out of time, all my other attempts resulted in pathetic failure after only shooting one or two guys.

and with that, your humiliation, is complete.

i slightly cheated during that mission.. it's so much easier when you get close to the guys to actually land the plane and shoot them from the floor! (and use L1 and R1 to turn - it works especially well when they're stuck behind traffic) still took a few goes, mind.

-- ken c (pykachu10...), December 9th, 2004 3:22 AM. (ken c)
tonight i will mostly be concentrating on winning the motorbike checkpoint mission at the boat yard in San Fierro. Has anyone done this yet? It's so friggin hard to get some of the rings high up at the sides. I suppose focus and concentration (and practice) are the key.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 9th, 2004 3:52 AM. (Fuzzy)
and ken, i think that's how I completed supply lines too.

so many great vehicles in this game, currently i'm loving the Dumper Truck!

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 9th, 2004 3:59 AM. (Fuzzy)
haha, i could've sworn i'd ranted about the NRG challenge on here already. it fucking BRUTALIZED me, i spent maybe three days straight trying to get it (i can't believe my controller has survived this far btw). i heard all sorts of tips about how to line up the jumps correctly and how to maximize your speed going up the half-pipe, but for some reason none of it worked for me. so you basically just have to refine your routine as tightly as you can and learn which angles will actually be able to propel you towards those high rings (the ones i ended up using were pretty fucking outlandish).

the trick with supply lines: i thought it was unwinnable until i realized that when you shoot at the two couriers who abandon their vehicles, they will chase after you on foot. those two couriers are also the ones closest to you when you start out!! so just quickly fire at both of them and continue west to take out the third courier. after you make him explodey, you literally turn the plane around and the two couriers on foot are lined up, waiting to be mowed down. if it all goes well you should mos def have enough time to get the other two and still get back to the red corona.

-- \(^o^)/ (adelangston@hotmail.com), December 9th, 2004 10:15 AM. (Adrian Langston)
such a successful evening on the game, did manage to complete the NRG challenge and i found reversing up opposite ends of the half pipe exteremely useful.
also finished the Trucking levels, another courier mission, got Gold in my bike training. finished all 3 stadium events. and found some more tags.

What the hell is the 'Dune' truck all about?

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 9th, 2004 4:37 PM. (Fuzzy)
I'm slightly disappointed by the Hydra. It's a Harrier jump jet! With rockets and shit! And yet...it's kind of a pain in the ass to take off and fly, it tends to explode rather easily, and in general it doesn't seem quite as awesome as it should be. The idea of flying a FIGHTER JET in a GTA game is something that should not be trifled with. I would have preferred a straight-up F16. (Although it can target enemies on the ground, which is really cool.)

I'm now working on side missions, mostly - the courier missions, airplane races, boat and bike school (both easy), import/export et al. I managed to squander $50,000 gambling and get chased down and killed by Mafia operatives after a lengthy gun battle. The series of threatening phone calls they made to me as my debt mounted was pretty tremendous.

Out of curiosity, is there a flamethrower anywhere? I have a sudden urge to set some people on fire, and I'd hate for the marijuana field mission to be the only place where it makes an appearance in SA.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 10th, 2004 9:13 AM. (dayan) (later)
yes, as you drive out of ..... erm one of the badlands places (bottom left of the map)there's a hill out of town with a row of wooden shacks where there's usually a few cars - there's a flamethrower there, also one near a railway line in san fierro

-- Porkpie (porkypi...), December 10th, 2004 9:16 AM. (porkpie) (later)
i can't get the key card from millie because the bitch is never fucking home. wtf, i've only been out with her once. does she work 24-7? HELP A BROTHA OUT.

-- Big Baby Bingo (formerlypoopsmcge...), December 10th, 2004 9:18 AM. (Chris V) (later)
if you manage to get Helena to be your girlfriend she houses a flamethrower in her barn too.

There's also one in the back o beyond place, its like a mound island with a lot of trees at the centre with wide dirt tracks surrounding it. the flamethrower is in the middle somewhere.

i got used to the jet, are you pushing forward on the right analogue stick to change flying mode from hover to normal? pull back to return to hover mode obv. It's really fast though and i still crash a lot.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 10th, 2004 9:25 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
and explain more about this gambling debt, how does that work?

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 10th, 2004 9:28 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
Yeah, I figured out about the right analog stick, but the Hydra just feels too twitchy and uncontrollable. It's kind of like the BF Injection of the sky, although the changes in physics whenever you blow an engine are pretty great. On the whole I'd just rather fly a Shamal or an AT-400 to get from place to place.

You can gamble and lose money at casinos in LV; I didn't realize it at first, actually, playing $5000/hand video poker, but I quickly found myself deep in the hole. You get a few phone calls if you don't pay the casino back; at first they're pleasant and businesslike, but much like student loan companies, by the third day or so they're doing drive-bys in the desert.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 10th, 2004 10:07 AM. (dayan) (later)
i thought you could only play the games cash up front, are you saying you have no money whatsoever?

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 10th, 2004 10:10 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
After buying a ton of property, I think I had about $100,000 in cash that I ended up losing (going from +$100,000 to -$60,000, in other words). They'll actually extend a line of credit if you begin betting with a sufficient gambling level and run out of cash (I've spent a lot of time in the casinos lately); you can continue to wager the minimum on whatever table/machine you're playing to break even again, but there's no limit to how much you can lose if you're bad enough.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 10th, 2004 10:14 AM. (dayan) (later)

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 13th, 2004 8:22 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
I managed to amass about six million dollars over the weekend gambling. I think you might be inclined to win more as your gambling level increases; that royal flush at $25000/hand video poker certainly didn't harm matters much.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 13th, 2004 8:29 AM. (dayan) (later)
Not quite into that realm of gambling just yet, just the $1000 stakes at the moment.

and I found another casino to play in, but it's only a small one with limited games on offer. Everyone was hogging the slots as well.

You know about the bug with Inside Track Betting, right? Supposedly it's very easy to win incredible amounts of money by betting all you've got on the #5 horse again and again; when I went home for Thanksgiving my kid brother had an account balance in the billions simply by betting on horses and reloading if he happened to lose.

IMHO that takes all the fun out of it (ie. killing drug dealers for their cash, using the import/export crane, etc), but it's apparently a really quick way to make some money in Los Santos.

-- Daniel Cohen (danielcohe...), December 13th, 2004 8:42 AM. (dayan) (later)
I kept reading about the inside track betting, and when I tried it I came in last like 50 times in a row (and I kept re-loading). I don't know if there's a connection or if it was just the timing, but I tried it again and for some unknown reason, decided to hold down the select button, and I won no problem. So I did it three more times, holding down select every time. I'm now 8 million dollars richer because of it.
I just got into the casinos on the weekend. It seemed to take only three hands before I was able to move up to the $1000 tables. I could see myself getting very addicted to the casinos.

-- Jonathan (jonathan_m...), December 13th, 2004 9:33 AM. (Jonathan) (later)
I keep going back and forth between San Fierro and Los Santos, picking up my two grand from the valet service and the grocery store. And I'm getting much braver with the cops now. I'll shoot a dealer, even if a cop's nearby. If the cop starts with me, fuck him, I shoot him too. I just jump in a car and drive to a paint and spray. Pay $100 to earn $2000? You damn right.

I'm still on the roof with Zero. I saw David Cross in the bathtub last night on "Arrested Development", and realized that I can't stand his voice anymore either.

The stop and reload doesn't work for me at the OTB, either. I do have a favorite "lucky" machine, though.

I found a Remington really easily (in Queens?), although one also spawns at Unity Station in Los Santos. I can't find a Feltzer at all; I've even been driving around with other convertibles looking for it to no avail.

If people hate David Cross based on his VO for this game, it's their own fault, as far as I'm concerned, but I wonder if any of them have ever seen "Mr. Show."

Re: the addictiveness of the video poker - yes, I have got to the point where I get annoyed at my character for standing there repetitively sticking dollars into the video poker, so I stop doing that and go spend half an hour trying to get the 90 in the Driving School. It's like buying The Sims, and then getting to the point when your sim's too tired all the time, and it's 2am and there's still dirty dishes in the sink, then you look up, and it's 2am and there's dirty dishes in the sink. The feeling that you've purchased software that turns your PC/PS2 into an automated mocking machine - not one of my favourites.

learning to fly is a right royal pain, cann't even get circle and land right, so I went off to las venturas and jumped on top of a car and blew up passers by. The heat seeking missile is fantastic, as is the spaz shotgun.

-- Porkpie (porkypi...), December 15th, 2004 4:14 AM. (porkpie) (later)
I'm really not a fan of the combines, tractors, bulldozers, forklifts, etc. Having to think about how to steer with rear-wheel drive is hard.

I tried out the riot cheat last night and wound up playing it like that for an hour or so. Rocket launchers are fun, but it was nice to get back to proper society after awhile.

-- Pleasant Plains (acewhiske...), December 15th, 2004 11:47 AM. (Pleasant Plains) (later)
learning to fly is hell in the game, but honestly, once you get past the circle and land mission, the others are pretty straight forward. It took me a few hours to get the circle and land one right. Of course, I also wasted hours trying to pass city slicking.

-- Jonathan (jonathan_m...), December 15th, 2004 1:30 PM. (Jonathan) (later)
in the past week i have gotten all gold at all the schools, finished all the race tournaments, collected all the oysters and horseshoes, and a bunch of other annoying crap. I'm on the casino missions and have finished every odd job in the game. (flight school was hella easy though, i only needed like 2 hours max to get all gold, nowhere near what i had to do for driving school) i've never ever put this much work into a game. and jesus does it feel like work. the ratio of fun-to-tedium is so skewed in this game, the missions are a blast but compared to all of the stuff i'm doing for 100% (which admittedly is my own choice) they constitute an extremely small portion of gaming time. i dunno, it's obviously a great game if it compelled me to obsessively seek out and master every nook and cranny of its obscenely huge world (i own maybe 50+ games, have only ever beaten maybe 5, 6 of them) (no attn span), i mean i never got halfway through gta3 and i barely even started vice city. i wouldn't even mind doing all these outlandish tasks if there was more meat to the damn thing, like at least another 50 missions or something. it would be a lot more rewarding than the rubbish you get for completing all the side jobs (i mean, what good is having a rhino and a hydra gonna do me when i've already done everything in the game?? rampaging about the city and forcing the military to supplicate to my unstoppable death machine is great, but kinda gets old fast)

also, can I just ask if anyone here knows why the Hydra is such a GIANT FUCKING DINGLEBERRY? Holy cannoli, finally getting to fly one was like finding out santa doesn't exist. jesus it's so slow, how come I can't get it to fly like a normal jet instead of just hovering constantly?? Why does it fireball after the slightest scratch (as opposed to the hunter, which i've had survive two consecutive SAM hits)(though this would be more of an issue if the hydra actually flew fast enough to make obstacles unavoidable). what's supposed to be the selling point here, 'it's like a helicopter but is soul-destroyingly slow and useless as well!!!' the only advantage it has is the chaff, which i suppose is sort of cool since I'm constantly getting shot down in the hunter. the anger of bees swarms within me!!!!

67%, but only just started in Las Venturas. I tried Fender Ketchup a dozen times, weaving down the road, and then back up the... oh bollocks I've hit someone. -- Ste (ste.foste...), December 16th, 2004 8:10 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
Well, there may be other stuff you can do in the meantime. I know I have to:

import/export cars
start street races
go for gold in the non-boat schools
a bit more flying, to max out my skill (the previous item will probably take care of that)
give more lovin' to my three non-Denise girlfriends, and go find the country girl
work on my weapons percentage (this is so easy once you're dating police girl and nurse girl, and get to Las Venturas and its police station that you can go crazy in)
more ammunation challenges
more courier challenges
more official races/challenges in the stadia
do more jumps
the last two trucking missions
and if I ever get really bored, Zero

Holy crap, I'm not going to be finished until 2006.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 16th, 2004 8:14 AM. (afarrell) (later)
go for gold in the non-boat schools

On this subject: holy friggerty, how do you do a stoppie? I follow the instructions - speed up, hold forwards, switch to brake before the cones, and still end up stopping only half way through.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 16th, 2004 8:23 AM. (afarrell) (later)
well the stuff that I know about that i have yet to do:

shooting range
dirt track
beat the cock (found two beaches for this so far)
maybe another courier mission on LV which i have yet to find
horseshoes, oysters, tags, snapshots
mountain bike challenge
street races
gold in burn&lap, city slicker
unique jumps
paramedic (tradition denotes that this will be the final thing i do)
burglar
find the cop girlfriend that andrew just mentioned who i never realised existed.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 16th, 2004 8:31 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
Last mission I did was Green Goo. Where is the dirt track?

-- Big Baby Bingo (formerlypoopsmcge...), December 16th, 2004 8:33 AM. (Chris V) (later)
i think letting go of the brake while still pushing forward should do the trick for stoppies, i was even trying to accelerate a bit but i don't think its necessary if your timings right. Just make sure you already have a ton of speed behind you.

-- Ste (ste.foste...), December 16th, 2004 8:38 AM. (Fuzzy) (later)
I forgot burglar! And valet! and lowrider dancing game! and vigilante! Beat the cock is the triathlon, right?

Dirt Track is one of the two stadium games in Las Venturas.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 16th, 2004 8:39 AM. (afarrell) (later)
[triathlon]Yes, I've found two so far. Difficult to attempt because like the girlfriends the red corona hardly ever shows up.

Green Goo? Who was that for, I can't remember it? I did the keycard mission after I'd done the main story and Green Goo was not the last mission, if thats any help.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 16th, 2004 9:10 AM. (afarrell) (later)
El Barancas (?), west of the airstrip.

Crucially the town with a police station.

The import/export stuff happens after you finish the motor dealership, which you should start (they're Cesar's missions) after the mission that gets you out of San Fierro.

-- Andrew Farrell (afarrel...), December 16th, 2004 9:10 AM. (afarrell) (later)
I think, I *think*, you need to pass the driving school and then complete the rest of the missions that suddenly spring up at the garage in San Fierro. I'm sure one of the missions triggers the import/export crane.

But it's been a while and i could be slightly wrong.

Playing this after really loving Vice City. I was a little afraid i wouldn't like it as much, cos the stylized Vice City was so neon and cool. But yeah, this game is HUGE. I've only just gotten to the countryside and I'm realizing how effing big this game is. Amazing.

Also, the music is awesome. Haven't heard this much gangster rap since the first summer my family got cable and my TV was on MTV all the time.

Plus, it's kinda badass to do drive-bys to Hank Williams.

Yeah, i hijacked that semi. Came at a nice time too, cos I was just getting into gang wars and then hit a snag. I can't wait til I can buy a cowboy hat.

Gotta feel bad for all those folks who really buckled down and did the gang wars before the countryside.

This game is so much fun. I can see completing all the missions and then spending a while just exploring and then doing all the side missions. So rad! I already got the pimp missions completed and those were pretty entertaining. Picking up and dropping off hos, running off to rescue one of them from a non-paying customer or some punk trying to mess with her. Really interesting stuff.

For all the senseless violence that occurs in this game, there is a lot of problem solving. And the pimp game actually reinforces non-violence against your women.

I just replayed some GTA 3 on an iPad and it was awesome. Will they do the same for San Andreas?

Holy crap. So I was helping Peter Fonda destroy his weed crop with a flamethrower with a police chopper overhead, the screen getting shaky while more and more of the stuff burns. Then he hands me a rocket launcher.

Really, this game just keeps getting better and better.

Thank God they made the 50 taxi missions cumulative. Don't have to do them all in a row! Between valet, trucking, driving school, shooting practice, b-ball, pool, etc. it's one of the mini games i won't miss.

Yeah, any game that forces you to marathon that shit is one that ensures I don't play that aspect.

the best place, I found, to do the paramedic missions, was the desert town where you meet the cop girlfriend. the missions cover a smaller area than most other places.

Have you reached the missions for the toy store guy yet? Man they were brutal.

oh yeah those were hellish

the only thing in this game i don't look back on fondly and being reminded of them now settles in my head the gta:san andreas vs. red dead redemption battle for my fave video game all time.

Yeah i just met up w David Cross's character. I still have to buy his store to unlock those missions but from what I've heard I'm not exactly jumping at the case. Plus, I'm a few thou short, so I've been just driving around, shooting people, picking up paper, etc.

I tried doing a truck mission (number 2?) and there were cops on me from the start and they just destroyed my cargo! Have no idea how I'm going to pull that one off...

and getting gold in the driving licence missions. oh dude i have to replay this game.

PSOD (Ste), Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:09 (eleven years ago) link

Uff, getting gold in the "spin reverse directly onto this spot" is near the top of the "10 things I am glad to have done in a videogame that I am equally glad never to have to do again"

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:21 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the sheer brutality of some of SA missions was quickly mirrored in the vast satisfaction you got from completing them.

PSOD (Ste), Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:36 (eleven years ago) link

but i guess that's just true of any challenging game.

would like to re-brag about how I one hundred percented this game btw.

PSOD (Ste), Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:37 (eleven years ago) link

Me too!

As regards bits of computer landscape that have embedded themselves into my brain (and caused occasional real-not real confusion), this is second to GTA3, though.

a buddy of mine and I 100%ed this sucker over a couple years. It is a source of great pride and shame.

Clay, Thursday, 12 July 2012 09:01 (eleven years ago) link

Andrew, same here. What's even more confusing is when you then play Liberty City Stories to death which has a slightly altered map of gta3. Then go back to play gta3. mind fuck.

- My driving experience level tends to go up right when I am crashing into everything around me.
- Started dating Katie, now if I die i keep all my weapons. Nice! I just have to remember not to get busted and I can basically do whatever I want. A shame gang wars aren't active right now.
- Also i installed Hot Coffee, so i can see what that's all about eventually...
- David Cross isn't that annoying, he's kinda funny, in an insufferable prick kinda way. His first mission w the mounted Gatling gun was fun!
- Pimping is the best way right now for me to make a bunch of $$$ quickly.
- No way in hell i am going through driving school.
- No way am I doing those car/bike-in-a-giant-bowl time trials where you have to run through red circles and stuff. I am not a good driver in this game.
- I really love MC Forth Right, have been keeping mostly it at Playback FM and Radio Los Santos. The German DJ on SF-UR is hilarious.
- Being a valet was fun! Plus i now own the hotel! Or something!
- At first I really hated driving between the islands, but I'm getting used to it now. I just wreck a lot of cars.

- The OTT radio commercials remind me a lot of Robocop, which is a good space for this game to exist.
