Michael, yes. It was recommended on another SF thread and seems like a very nice place for the price!

What are our transport options to get from Sacramento to SF on a Sunday afternoon/evening?
Car rental? Train? Plane? Bus?
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link
Rock, it's across from Tommy's Joynt and not far from Polk Street.
― Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link
Amtrak, Rock.
― Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link
Excellent, multiple trains to choose from. I'm not exactly sure when we'll get free from the fair on Sunday.
I stuck my head in Tommy's one day when I was in the city for a concert, decided not to eat there. Can't remember why.
― Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link
Cheap drinks, though and the au jus was a childhood favorite.
― Michael White, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:07 (fifteen years ago) link
We don't really have much of an agenda for our stay in SF, other than meeting Michael and any other ILXors who want to meet up, good eats, good drinks, cool weather, a Giants game... Anybody have any must-see or must-do recommendations?
― Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:49 (fifteen years ago) link
I am holding out on plans because I may have to go to Vega$ but I will let you know the sitch as it develops.

What are you into Rock? Museums? Movies? Shopping?
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 21:59 (fifteen years ago) link
There are plenty of neat museums (MOMA--with a Frida Kahlo exhibit, the Cartoon Art Museum, MOAD, the Contemporary Jewish Museum--which I've not been to, Yerba Buena Center usually has an exhibit) all within a block or so of 3rd and Mission. The new De Young in Golden Gate Park is pretty nice too and the park itself is nice to walk or bike (if you want to rent one.)
For movies it's always worth checking the listings for the Castro, Red Vic, Roxie, or the Yerba Buena Center (again). The SF Bay Guardian has decent listings for movies or theater or shows or what not. Flavorpill SF is also dead useful.

wife just went with the wee one to the Frida Kahlo exhibit today - will report back later
― Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 22:14 (fifteen years ago) link
Museums yes, movies quite possibly, shopping not as much, though I may go to Amoeba briefly. I had forgotten about the Cartoon Art Museum -- I'd like to go there if we have time. I never made the time for it on previous visits to the city.
I've been keeping half an eye on Pollstar for the last couple of months, but nothing concertwise has grabbed me.

I just got back from San Fran. Tiburon is HORRIBLE and that crazy crooked street is HORRIBLE and Haight-Ashbury is HORRIBLE and Fisherman's Wharf is alright.
― Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link
You went to Hooters, didn't you?
― libcrypt, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link
I wish. Hooters would've been awesome compared to, say, the fucking shitty upper class patio bar that I went to in Tiburon that cost a gazillion dollars. I'm also fucking pissed that I didn't have a chance to go to an In-n-Out Burger, which I really really wanted to go to after I saw that ILX "Favorite fast food restaurant" poll a couple months back where In-n-Out Burger won in a landslide and a half. But even if I did, it probably would've still ended up being puked back up at the side of the road because everybody got carsick because we weren't used to those crazy twisty-turny California roads on our way up to Mendocino. Fuck California.

lol tourists

California is sorry that yr trip went so bad. If California could offer you a full refund, California would do so, with no hesitation.
California is very sorry that you will never ever ever ever be returning to California.
― libcrypt, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 06:51 (fifteen years ago) link
Frida Kahlo exhibit was ok; a little boxy in the presentation with eveybody more inclined to listen to their audio guides and shuffle around the rooms' perimeters like drones, but still full of pleasant surprises. The Lee Miller exhibit on the second floor was awesome, though.
― Michael White, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link
every special exhibit i've ever gone to at sfmoma has been like that, it must be the floor that stuff is on.

hey guys, i land around 8pm tonight!
what are good record stores and thrift stores in the bay area? does anyone know about record stores and thrift stores in ARCATA??
― 69, Friday, 15 August 2008 14:33 (fifteen years ago) link
Best record store is easily the Sam Goody's in Stonestown. They have a wicked killer cassingle section.
― Steve Shasta, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link
Folks seem to like Amoeba on Haight & Stanyan. The thrift stores are all totally picked over by the "vintage" places, tho.
― libcrypt, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link
Aquarius, and also Grooves.
― polyphonic, Friday, 15 August 2008 18:12 (fifteen years ago) link
pete are you buying vinyl? some guy myspaced me randomly and asked for recos. this is what i told him:
some good stores (besides amoeba, which is a behemoth) areGrooves. on market and octavia. not the best 12" or even disco selection, but one of my fave stores. tons of 70s rock and weird stuff. the owner is an old fixture on the 60s/70s psych scene. did light shows for all the big clubs. he dances around stoned and tells great stories.Open Mind. market at maybe church? prolly your best bet for cheap disco and 12"s.Groove Merchant. THE beatdigger store. you'll pay for it though. amazing selection of jazz/soul/psych/disco, but really expensive.Rooky Ricardos. Lower Haight near fillmore. great 7" selection. older gay white owner is really sweet and REALLY into soul.all of the above except amoeba have listening stations.
