I just walked by the big Ben's Chili Bowl 50th Anniversary lineup on U street and I spotted many celebrities, no doubt, but I mistook them all for unusually well-mannered DC buppies because I am a rangy white bigot and a fool who did not know it was Ben's 50th bash with celebrities attending

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 August 2008 23:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I seriously did not read the news today and my situational awareness was so bad I probably could have looked Bill Cosby right in the eye and thought "man that guy looks a lot like Bill Cosby, wow"

El Tomboto, Thursday, 21 August 2008 23:24 (fifteen years ago) link

this happens to me all the time!

Item! Was that a lugagge-less BOBBY GILLESPIE running through international arrivals at Gatwick yesterday?

Item! Was that a verrry pregnant KIRSTY ALLSOP trying on clothes in the dressing room of the MATERNITY section of Topshop today?

Item! Was that really a be-hatted and be-stubbled MICHAEL STIPE walking by an atm off of Carnaby Street HOLDING SOMEBODY'S HAND today?

Item! This reporter would not have GUESSED that SIENNA MILLER fancies the clothes at Topshop, but there she was, LEAVING the shop, WITH A SHOPPING BAG in broad daylight today.

It would appear that Finlay Quaye is currently stalking me, I've seen him round Camden three times in the last couple of weeks.

Richard Ayoade in Kennington, and outside the Royal Festival Hall. Meredith MacNeill, peep show occasional and Man Stroke Woman stalwart, in the BFI. My cup runneth over!

#1: Doris Roberts in the lobby of the Arclight
#2: Oscar from The Office sat next to us at "Burn After Reading"
#3: John Densmore from The Doors in front of us in the checkout line at the 3rd & La Brea Trader Joes (he was buying cat food)

Paul Cook standing on a street corner in Soho... he looks like WH Auden these days. Then, half an hour later, Steve Diggle strolling along nattering on a mobile phone. 'Tis the season for old punk rockers, me hearties.

not exactly a "sighting" like running into them on the street though.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 26 September 2008 13:37 (fifteen years ago) link

wow that's big league! was he friendly?

Local Garda, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 21:10 (fifteen years ago) link

very nice guy. we didn't have toooo much of a conversation. mostly me being like "you can have this record for free" (cuz he spent a lot of money) and then him asking for the new location of our manhattan store. but yes, very nice and humble and friendly.

- Walked past Chris Noth on the way to work this morning. He is genuinely pretty large. Managed not to say "I really liked your one line as a tranny hooker in that Richard Hell movie."

- Also Law & Order-wise: saw Bebe Neuwirth this summer, standing on a streetcorner in bike shorts waiting for someone. Bebe Neuwirth is fantastically gorgeous.

- Couple weeks ago: bumped into Lukas Haas's bike. Did a whole "oops, sorry" / "no, my bad, Lukas Haas" thing.

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, maybe from spring: walked past the guy who played Michel on Gilmore Girls, and was getting really excited about it, then noticed curly-haired scientist-guy from Bones walking right behind him (some sort of casting was going on nearby, maybe?) -- this was sort of trippy, in that having two minorish network-TV actors just wandering around created a weird Truman Show effect where it felt like all the people around in daily life were being replaced by actors

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i, too, have seen chris noth (wearing a terrible sweatsuit) and bebe neuwirth recently! also adam duritz (his apt is right by my office), daniel day lewis (in that ridiculous leggings/big hat/plaid cape ensemble), kevin corrigan (<3), and hilary duff.

daniel day lewis (in that ridiculous leggings/big hat/plaid cape ensemble)

Yeah he really gets into the method actor thing. While studying in Dublin in 2001, one of my housemates saw him walking around our neighborhood in what we would later realize was his Bill the Butcher costume from Gangs of New York which, of course, came out the following year.

jason jones of the daily show, manning the duck-pond game at a school fundraising fair in our neighborhood sunday afternoon. it was one of the least popular attractions, but that wasn't his fault. hard to compete with inflatable bounce-houses and decorate-your-own-cupcake.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 03:18 (fifteen years ago) link

cupcakes always after bouncy castle, never before.

I met and chatted with Kelis once. I made a dick of myself by trying to talk about her album that never got a U.S release that I couldn't remember the name of.

Oh no, Guadalajara won't do. (Kate.), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 06:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Eventful walk to work this morning. I passed:

- Gilbert Gottfried, muttering to himself and making that squinty face

- Reg E. Cathey, who played Carcetti's head advisor in The Wire (if you don't watch the Wire I think he was in Airheads), looking sceptically back at me looking admiringly over at him
