I see the front page as I upload an image. I'll learn to do it with my eyes closed one of these days.

you'd think all these people with serious concerns about the correct use of language wd be too busy writing books about it to spend all day reading Facebook and Twitter

Evan, Monday, 8 September 2014 17:19 (nine years ago) link

the virulence of that LEARN TO READ, BITCH ASS WHORE crap has some crossover with the selfconsciously enlightened fedora culture which defines itself against 'swag' etc, people whose rhetorical style owes everything to dawkin's twitter and bill hicks

what's the point in having knowledge if you can't use it to access feelings of superiority / gain the admiration of like-minded neckbeards / hide your lack of training and general knowledge in the field via loudness and swears because the things you do actually have training and knowledge in can't be used to put down your 11 year old cousins and/or are too embarrassing to show off about / practice disgusting typography

JRN, Monday, 14 March 2016 03:41 (eight years ago) link

yeah, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. I agree with the 4chan dude that it's gross to use strangers as props in your selfies, but I can't get behind his assumption that narcissism must be her sole motive for taking the photo (maybe she's bored? maybe she thinks the pose/setting will amuse her friends? maybe she's just trying to document her life?) and that all women are similarly single-minded in their purposes. he isn't so much "getting into the female mindset" as basing his understanding of female behavior upon a single unflattering stereotype and refusing to consider any other possible explanations. and of course 4chan and imgur fall over each other to praise his cool, rational critique of human nature...

lol at Clinton's long dark night with Gwyneth Paltrow:

Attendees complained the underground venue “stank”, with perspiration “dripping off the walls” and the rooms too crowded to even see the former president.

One, who called it the “worst party ever” described how “angry people” were waiting in the queue outside while high-profile guests were admitted, and another condemned the event as “unpleasant”.

but that was 4 years ago so I don't know how that photo serves as proof that he's dying or whatever. and 4chan dude isn't exactly sticking his neck out by predicting that a 70-year-old man might have some major health issues.

I wanted to share some statistics with you from the CDC. In 2013, there were 33,685 deaths in the United States caused by firearms. 63% of theses were suicide (21,175), 33% were homicide (11,208), and the remaining 4% were legally justified (police, home invasion, etc) or an accident (child discharge, mishandling).

Of the 11,208 homicides, up to 80% (varies by city) are gang and/or drug related per combined reports from the FBI, NIJ, and CDC. That's roughly 8,966; leaving about 2,242 deaths in the year of 2013 that were not related to gangs or drugs.

This means that if you are not planning on killing yourself any time soon and don't associate with any gangs or drugs, your odds of being killed by a firearm this year are .0009494% (or 1 in 105,331). If you do plan on starting a gang, selling drugs, or fiddling around with the idea of blowing your brains out, don't worry your risk only goes up to .0105629% (or 1 in 9,467).

Also, just as a fun comparison, your odds of being killed in a motor vehicle accident are 1 in 9,434 (about the same as a firearm when offing yourself is on the table, more likely if not on the table). There is also a 1 in 6,569 chance you will die this year by poisoning, whether intentionally or by accident. A 1 in 10,996 you'll die from alcohol, you like to drink don't ya? A 1 in 6,862 you'll die from drug overdose, you like to pop a Xanax don't ya? Hell, there's a 1 in 10,556 chance you'll die from a fucking fall. A fall. All of these are far more likely (by up to a magnitude of 10) to occur to you this year than someone else's gun killing you.

Next time someone tells you we have a gun problem in this country, please share the statistics with him or her along with the linked sources.

Reminds me of

The population of the USA is 300 million.

160 million are retired.

That leaves 140 million to do the work.

There are 85 million in school.

Which leaves 55 million to do the work.

Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.

Leaving 15 million to do the work.

2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden.

Which leaves 12.2 million to do the work.

Take from that total the 10.8 million people who work for state and city governments.

And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.

At any given time there are 188, 000 people in hospitals.

Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.

Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.

That leaves just two people to do the work.

You and me.

And there you are,

sitting on your bum,

at your computer, reading jokes.

am i the only one who thinks that imgur comments are just the fucking worst people of all time? i'm speaking from a pathetic position of being burned repeatedly the last several times i've posted anything there. within nanoseconds of posting and image there i have triple-digit downvotes and there's one crowd of commenters that hates the title and a second that hates the description and a third is looking into my past posts and telling me they suck and a fourth says the whole idea was dumb and another says it's plagiarized and that i'm reposting stuff and claiming it as my own and a sixth is outside my window with an axe miming 'i'm slitting your throat'. it's fucking bananas! i wouldn't say some of the things they say to the worst person i ever met, not even trump, much less to someone who made an animation that i didn't like.

maybe i am just totally misunderstanding the imgur/reddit community? i give it a shot every several months to see if the community norms have changed but they seem to just be vomit leaking through the internet, year after year

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

i don't know much about the corporate history of imgur/reddit but are sort of the messageboard/community equivalents of a cool local business that keeps expanding and then becomes a regional power and then a national one with no meaningful connections to the initial local people who made it a success? i tend to think businesses operating on a nationwide scale are kind of doomed to be terrible; everything's just working against them. maybe messageboards are the same way

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 30 May 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

I have no idea how the reddit interaction goes, but imgur having its own comments/interaction model is just so weird

I had some images I was hosting there, that were public because I had no reason to make them otherwise, but using on twitter or ilx. And people randomly found them and left weird comments!
