i'm not a connoisseur but I like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Porter, most anything from Anchor Brewery in SF, Hoogarten, Turbodog and Purple Haze (both Abita I think?), Guinness and Newcastle and Belhaven. Had a Chimay Blue once and it was good.

Don't like: the evil twins Heiniken and Amstel Light, most wheat beers, any stout in a local brewery/restaurant, most Pete's Wicked beers.

And when it comes to cheap domestic, anything beats Coors Light.

I had never been a beer lover until I sipped a Budvar on the train from Vienna to Prague. I ended up drinking about 7 of them on that not especially long ride.

Unfortunately they don't sell it in California (unless someone knows otherwise!). They do sell something called Czechvar which is supposedly from the same brewery but doesn't taste nearly as good.

Search also: Guinness (yes A, beer is good food!), Budweiser (especially during Raider games - n.b. it tastes like shit in Britain where they change the formula) Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Red Hook, Anchor Steam, and Keystone Dry (for being the best tasting dirt cheap beer when I was 18 and had no way of obtaining anything else - respect).

czechvar is budvar. it is packaged exactly the same way and, well, yeah, it is the same...guess they call it that in the US to stop people confusing it with budweiser, the king of beers. maybe the export-destined stuff ain't as good or maybe it doesn't travel well. as they say. or maybe it just tasted better on holiday.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, but I having had guinness in america. UGH. guess it's the FDA; they have to pasturise it, or something, and it makes it taste a bit very disgusting.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

re Budvar vs. Czechvar, Actually, I think the alcohol content is different (i.e. less), since most beers in Europe would have to be called a "malt beverage" here in the USA and there would be difficulty marketing/selling it in certain places. Actually I think the reason American Budweiser tastes shitty over there is that it's too alcoholic.

Although I might be completely off my rocker. Does anyone know if this is true?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 October 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

D, mostly. I drink to get fucked up, not for pleasure.

Light causes beer to "skunk" through some chemical reaction. Clear bottles are useless, green a tiny bit better, and dark brown the best, but not perfect, at preventing this.

fletrejet, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, Thinking about it, I always notice it most with green bottles.

I dig all the Unibroues that I've had. I'm about to have an Ephemere apple one and normally I don't even like fruit beers - this one just smells more like apple than it actually tastes.

Lately the default beers in my fridge have been Alaskan IPA and Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale.

I've been hanging around a lot with those people that don't eat meat so its all Stella's and Becks.

Drinking mainstream continental lager and vegetarianism go hand in hand do they?

I quite like Becks (is it just me that thinks it tastes slightly of apple juice?), Stella is rank though.

Anderson Valley's Summer Solstice Cerveza is one of the best brews I've had in a long time (and I've pretty much had everything the distributors around here provide)

OTOH Mendocino Valley's White Ale is nearly undrinkable. Tasted like fruity/spicy sausage. Should be ideal for making beer brats, though.

are there any lagers of note brewed in england? that are available in america?

mizzell, Monday, 21 July 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

English lager? Well ... There's a lager made by Wells that is available over here, but I don't think I've ever seen Wells lager in England. Must be an export only deal (possibly a re-brand of something less notable) so I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you want English lager for the sake of English lager.

And that is actually all I can think of.
