when is a kid not a kid anymore?

i just got back from my stepaunt's funeral. on monday, her 12 year old son shot and killed her. he says it was an accident but they are charging him with murder and are considering trying him as an adult.
he was allowed to come to the funeral, but he was handcuffed, and had three police guards with him. his father and grandparents and sisters havent been allowed to see him since he was put into custody.
it was possibly the most spirit-crushing thing i have ever, ever seen. how can they treat a 12 year old like that?
if they try him as an adult, hed be the youngest person in pennsylvania ever tried as an adult.
i am going to flip. out. if thats the case. am i the only one that thinks that this is absurd? he is a CHILD. i see trying 16 year olds that shoot or stab people in robberies, in cold blood, as adults. but a 12 year old who probably hasnt even begun to hit puberty who accidently shot his mom, and who obviously is fucked up from it seeing as he sobbed through the entire funeral?
sorry this is so depressing, but i want to see where other people would draw the line.

That's awful, Amy, I'm so sorry. And I completely agree with you that he should be tried in juvenile court. A 12-year-old is not an adult by any stretch of the imagination.
