14) Spurn Point(almost Hull) feels like the edge of the world
15) white telephone boxes

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Spiderz and those utterly deadly £1.15 alcoholic tizer things or whatever they are called. This way lies madness!

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

14) And, ultimately, London 0 - Hull 4

stevie mitch, Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

FONDA 500!!! A national resource!

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Twinned with the Freetown in Sierra Leone (+ probably as rough)

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, 16) then - damn this telephone exchange

stevie mitch, Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it? I thought it was twinned with Hull, Ontario and Hull, Quebec.

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It is, witness local MP bragging about in the Commons : Hansard

Also third most bombed city in WW2 after London and Coventry, Birdseye views of Hull

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooh, birdseye views! Cool! I've been in Prince's Marina. What a weird shopping mall. Didn't get to go in the Queens Gardens, though. Next time, we'll go there. (We keep saying we'll visit Beverly, as well, and never actually get out there.)

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i was born in hull, but we left when i was 6 months old

i saw stereolab and medicine at hull adelphi (on different occasions).

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

about that Pozy nightclub... because I met someone in there on the opening night (Easter?) and she was v nice, owned a gallery in Hull, lost her on the 7th floor.... *sigh*

stevie mitch, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My great-grandfather was from Hull.

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 12 October 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

my mum is from Hull

ducklingmonster, Sunday, 13 October 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Kevin McNamara (Labour MP for one of the Hull constituencies since 27th January 1966 by-election) is great: he reminds me of how much better I'm sort of convinced everything was before Blair appeared on the scene, though I don't think I'd choose to live any year other than 2002 if I had the choice. That being said, his retirement (and doubtless replacement by a Blairite FUCKING WANKER) would depress me.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Sunday, 13 October 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

hull's great as long as you dont have to grow up, live or visit there.

its grand for students in other words. fish-stinking misery for the rest of us.

david mc, Sunday, 13 October 2002 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all fun and games till someone mentions the bleedin' Housemartins...

petra jane (petra jane), Sunday, 13 October 2002 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

also - the hull accent is like nails scraping down a blackboard. i lived in dudley for 3 years and that doesnt even come close to the verbal atrocity of ULLspeak ("the snurrr on hurrrldurrnuss rurrrd").

"Ooooh, birdseye views! Cool! I've been in Prince's Marina. What a weird shopping mall."

it's called Princess Quay. somebody tried to rape me in the upper deck toilets once.

"Didn't get to go in the Queens Gardens, though."

it's where the smack addicts go to sink a few syringes after signing on. avoid.

"Next time, we'll go there. (We keep saying we'll visit Beverly, as well, and never actually get out there.)"

oh god, beverley is the most horrid parochial narrow-minded bigoted place i've ever been in my entire life. amusing only for the nightlife rioting between the townies and the squaddies from Leconfield, and shit scary for the same reasons.

david mc, Sunday, 13 October 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

do you want a glass of 'cerk'?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 13 October 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Hull accent is adorable! It's taken me about three years to understand it, but it is cute.

Anywhere is a horrible place if you're from there. Every time I go to Hull (and I've been there quite a bit for some ungodly reason) I end up having the most fantastic time. You really can't argue with that. The people are so amazingly friendly and down to earth. And the New Adelphi really should get be given landmark status and a great big endowment by the National Trust for its contribution to society.

kate, Sunday, 13 October 2002 08:14 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe. i've had some godawful miserable nights in the adelphi while the bottom feeders of the hull music 'scene' are paraded in front of me (ie. the bits that don't belong to pork recordings or are paul heaton). and i'm not sure about paul jackson.. that john peel interview summed him up pretty well.

i never liked Different Class, but i always associate that area of hull with Common People for some reason. oversaturated with overprivileged foreign/southern students on a permanent irony trip.

there are some aspects of hull i like a lot and that are close to me but it is my home and i do feel close to and conscious of it enough to tear apart its bad qualities, of which it has very many.

david mc, Sunday, 13 October 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad and his side of the family are from 'Ull. Haven't been in years (12 to be exact) but I have happy memories of visiting my Aunty 'Hull' Hilda during my childhood. And so, as such, when ever I think of Hull I think of home-made cheesecake, pots of tea and quaint, quiet, homely living.
Plus The Hosemartins were, of course, completely wonderful.

DavidM (DavidM), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

And so were The Housemartins, for that matter.

DavidM (DavidM), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hosemartins are clearly the Canadian version. (The boy I know in Hull is obsessed with Canada, so maybe it could work...)

kate, Sunday, 13 October 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved him on "Emu's Broadcasting Company", but then his numerous appearances on chat shows afterwards were just one big let-down after another, and The Pink Windmill Show was quite frankly rubbish.

Hull is the best place in the world. MY favourite h obby is sniffing cod, so i would know

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i would actually quite like to do a ctcl night at the adelphi or something because it is a great little venue and it seems bizarre that given the mag's myriad connections to the place the nearest place you could actually buy a copy from would probably be leeds or somewhere. convincing the venue that it would actually be a good idea and getting (good) bands that *arent* Fonda 500 to come play could be a problem tho.

david mc, Monday, 14 October 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"convincing the venue that it would actually be a good idea and getting (good) bands that *arent* Fonda 500 to come play could be a problem tho."

Just book that Housemartins/Beautiful South tribute band, The Beautiful Housemartins that are always gigging about. They won't need convincing. Go on, It'd be GRATE! Go on.

DavidM (DavidM), Monday, 14 October 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

why did The Beautiful South become so skullfuckingly drab after Briana Corrigan left? they're the only band i can think of that adequatly musically portrays Hull - both through their strengths and failings. they say for hull what The Sick Anchors version of Whole Again says about glasgow.

i mean this in a genuinely nice way.

Hull is awful. Spurn Point and the Humber Bridge, though, are great.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i live on the same spit of land as spurn point.

the park in that postcard is where all the junkies go to shoot up. the man on the horse statue is just next to the market place job centre where all the junkies go to throw up.

For some reason I was once drunk in Beverly in the company of Clint B0on. I'm not entirely sure how/why that occurred, though I suspect it may have been something to do with being besotted. Not with Clint B0on though. Cl1nt B0on was entirely incidental to proceedings, though he did get his round in.
