worst Canadian province

I think we can safely exclude Nunavut or the Northwest Territories, as I doubt even most Canadians have ever been there or had a desire to. Maybe the Yukon as well.

Otherwise... CANUX CANUX FITE FITE!!

DB is a bigot against the North. The Mounties will come down on his ass (oh my).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

ARCTICIST!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

DAN PERRY TO THREAD! Oh wait....

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

That blessed schizophrenia is finally revealed. Which Dang is the truly bad man?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

OK seriously, now... I've only driven in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec... and aside from Toronto (which is actually one of my favorite cities), based on the stretch of 401 alone, I'd vote Ontario, based on my direct experience. Besides, if the best provincial tourist campaign they can come up with is "Yours To Discover"...??? The fuck?

Then again, maybe that I never considered driving in Saskatchewan or Manitoba says more for them as candidates.

(Anthony, I want to visit Alberta... I'll find the time, soon, I hope.... I want to visit the eastern provinces one of these days, too... sigh)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

db, you live in vancouver right?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

nope, Seattle! But I have family in Victoria and Nanaimo. And I visit Vancouver often.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

crap! does anyone here know what moving from the us to vancouver entails, as far as legal schtuff goes? it seems like its relatively affordable, and very nice! i have been once or twice (also to victoria) and enjoyed myself. was considering spending a year or two up there.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

BC (no pun intended), I know someone who moved from Seattle to Vancouver for academic reasons just a few months ago. I'll be likely going up to Vancouver and Victoria this weekend actually, so I'll be sure to ask her.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks much!

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

alberta's the way forward.

b.c. is full of hippie/rich people dichotomy.
saskatchewan is a write-off.
manitoba is a write-off (oddly making winnipeg's cultural scene stronger).
ontario is a write-off but i hear ottawa is nice. you couldn't pay me to go to toronto.
quebec is cool, but francophone people never really learned that mullets and cheezy funk-influenced music went out with the eighties. and then there's constellation records ...
all that eastern bit is pretty cool, but not exactly an oasis of culture.
and lastly the northern parts are crap except for the yukon which i hear is very nice.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I don't know where you're coming from, but as a general rule of comparison when it comes to US vs. Canada costs:

Is it fun? Canada cheaper.
Is it necessary? U.S. cheaper.

That said, Vancouver and Victoria are among the most expensive cities in Canada to live in, depending on which part of each city you live in, of course. It's somewhere in between the cost of living in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, etc... rent's cheaper, but then salaries are smaller, etc. so it kinda balances out.

From New York, Boston, or SF.. Vancouver will certainly be cheaper, though.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

coming from the bay area. i did some rent calculator and it said vanc's avg rent is about 60% of SF.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds about right. Just remember that everything is generally a lil' more expensive though, even in US money..

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

ontario. fucking ontario.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on the context. Worst for what? Racism? Cost of living? All around worst-ness? I used to love Saskatchewan, now I'm almost afraid to go there. West of Winnipeg and east of Vancouver has large pockets of unpleasantness, but lots of good stuff, too. Haven't been east of Kenora (!), so I can't say much about Ontario, etc. Thanks Fields of Salmon for the acknowledgement of my city's scene. It is really cool to live here in Winnipeg. I mean, we have the largest city in North America with an openly gay mayor! Culture! Yeah, I guess my vote's for Saskatchewan, though it is nicer there than people who simply drive through it on the Trans Canada realize.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Sask. is red.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing anyone's ever told me about Ontario has made me want to go there. I've only been in BC, Alberta & Saskatchewan and they all seem okay. However northern BC is freaky in an isolated, "Deliverance" kinda way.

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Sask is too boring and too hard to spell to be the worst.
I'd say BC cause it lacks Tim Hortons on every block, has way too many Hippies, has way too many "socal activitists", doesn't understand just how many freaking seals are on the other coast, costs to much to live in the cities and is home to Sarah Mclaughlin.

(then again I heart Ontario and Toronto almost as much as I love NB and Halifax)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I like everywhere I've been in Canada, all of the provinces I have been to have been grebt.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote for Alberta based on my intense hatred of Calgary.

Calgary is:

- devoid of character and charm

- a place where people wear cowboy hats without a trace of irony or
self-consciousness

- one office building after another / one big mall

- brand new, the whole place looks like it was built yesterday

- a bunch of tall buildings surrounded by a lot of nothing

- nice, clean, dull, cold

- empty at night

- creepily religious

- dead boring

Miss Laura, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 07:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Do the Maritimes even exist anymore? Not that they ever did AFAIC. Isn't national unity grate!!!

dave q, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes they do exist. heck they were alot better off then Upper or Lower Canada at Confederation, well at least Nova Scotia was.

I heart all provinces really, though I wish we could annex northern Michigan though to save the insane drive through Northern Ontario.

Wonderful place to fish or hunt, horrible place to drive.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with you, Miss Laura. I just want to leave almost as soon as I get to Calgary. Edmonton nearly redeems Alberta as a province, though. I WANT TO GO FISHING WITH MR NOODLES!!! LAKE OF THE WOODS FOR MUSKIE!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Scratch that.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Nova Scotia kicks ass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 October 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll nix that little peanut province - P.E.I.... I don't like that their votes count more than ours do.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 18 October 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

wouldn't nunavut, the northwest territories, and yukon be out (or "ooot," as some Canadians say) just because they aren't provinces?

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 18 October 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Ontario

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 October 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

twelve years pass...

Seconded.

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 00:24 (eleven years ago)

What are the good points of Manitoba? Seems like a nullity to me, but I'm from Oregon, so what do I know?

Scapa Flow & Eddie (Aimless), Tuesday, 28 October 2014 01:34 (eleven years ago)

mosquitos? The Weakerthans? BTO? Neil Young? Polar bears in Churchill? The films of Guy Maddin?
