actually, NOT REALLY. but all my friends think so. i hate it. why not just have a black light and fake spiderwebs at your house but please don't make me choose and construct and wear a damnable costume. it's foolish, foolish and childish.

It's also something almost uniquely(?) North American for adults to get involved...

Android (Android Elvis), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

not at all surprised.

i did throw together a good and impromptu Steve Prefontaine a couple of years ago without, heaven forbid, having to BUY anything.

My friend's young nephew is going out this year dressed as a slice of pizza... or rather, a slice of pizza WITH AN AXE. This was his own costume idea.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

once I was a washing machine. no wait I was a robot. but I used a big square box and dryer ventilation ducting so there was some confusion. I thought the foil hat disambiguated things but apparently my intentions were not considered authoritative.

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

halloween: worst idea ever.

amy (amy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

how can you say that about a holiday that moves a kid to be PIZZA WITH AN AXE?! I am going to cry at the sheer beauty of it.

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

my father used to dress in a trash bag with various wastepaper stapled to the outside. EVERY YEAR.
i have deep emotional scars from this.

amy (amy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

'I'm missy elliot circa 2023!'

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I always procrastinate making a costume until an hour before holloween starts. So, I just go outside and ductape some branches to myself and say I'm a tree. I've done this a couple years in a row now. But who knows, maybe i'll surprise people this year.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

last year i gathered up a bunch of stuff id gotten in various asian countries and wore it all, going as a "multi-ethnic asian woman".
you needed a costume to get to the beer, what can i say?

amy (amy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The best part about Halloween is the Halloween themed concerts. Where the guitarist wears a giant bunny suit, and they play a cover of Pet Cemetary, and it's spooky.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm supposed to be going to a halloween party this year, but I am just not jazzed about getting dressed up (and normally I really love that kind of thing).

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

god bless america.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Halloween is fun! My parents used to go to a party every year and make complete arses of themselves in mad costumes, brilliant. I have fond memories coz my mum's quite arty so our costumes were always well cool and imaginative. I have lots of can't be bothered, do it in 5 mins type costume ideas if anyone needs them.

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, sheesh, halloween is what you make it. sure, you can sit around moping, or take to the streets dressed as KILLER ROBOTS. it's your choice.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I still go to school in costume on Hallowe'en. Nuts to all you sad grinches.

Miss Laura, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God, I forgot. Am going to a ROCK! Hallowe'en party, what to go as, what to go as...? I considered Marie Osmond, as I have naturally 70s hair (not in a good way), but I suppose more effort may have to be gone to. Bah.

What kind of pizza? What kind of axe? These things are important.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall be going as a spaceman. This consists of me wearing slightly more silver than usual, possibly with a child's raygun

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

halloween in the UK = "don't open to door to any bloody kids" and "keep the lights off so it looks like no one is in". Or is that just anti-fun West London?

guy fawkes is better!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The best thing to do on halloween is as follows (I'm quoting..someone, I dunno who. Maybe google can tell you)

This year, I'm living in a house with a lot of really weird people. We have a lot of big trees in front of our house and we got a lot of leaves which we piled up really high. Two guys hid in the pile. I would sneak up behind the little beggars and pretend to be tricker treating with them. When I passed by the pile of leaves, the two guys grabbed my legs and dragged me in kicking and screaming.

I encourage everyone to do this wherever possible

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

classic, except for when people dress up in crap costumes like putting on a skirt and blouse and saying "i'm a teacher!" what's the point?

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and this thread marks the first time i've sat in a public computer lab and been stared at for giggling uncontrollably. a sort of ilx initiation, i believe.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

LIZ you do NOT work for Haringey council do you?? COR!

There will be hairspray supplied at the party to support the amount of bouffant 'do's that I expect to be present.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"Or is that just anti-fun West London?"

Yes

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Starry pet,

Don't worry, it's only temporary. Although I'm considering taking a 6-month contract here. Yikes!

Anyway, shurely no hairspray is required for barnet so naturally bouffant as our fine specimens? Although I do see the necessity of having ROCK accoutrements generously spread around the house. I expect vats of brown M'n'Ms and crack at the very least.

In other news, is it acceptable to throw things at horrible horrible children from upper storeys - boiling oil for example - before they 'trick' your house with eggs and toilet roll? I ask purely for information.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

One year I went as Charlie Brown -- this was back in elementary school -- while I went in 1982 as Pac-Man. Of course. Then there was Raistlin in high school, which Dan doubtless will approve of.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Raistlin? Shurely no particular marks of distinction from other wizzards - unless you cultivate a mien of brooding yet strangely vulnerable menace. Oh bugger, now my nerd cover is blown.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha! Liz x = one of us. :-) The costume was black with two small hourglass figures and I did the gold skin/white hair combination while amping up the brooding, so I like to think I stood out from the neo-Merlins. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

if it's a rock halloween party, then the playing of Helloween is essential. The best band to ever have come out of Germany.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

ned, you need to do raistlin now, when you can surely get creepy hourglass contacts!

amy (amy), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

My good friend Tom owns this. When asked what he was planning on being for Halloween, he tipped back his drink, took a drag from his cigarette and calmly replied:

Anything but me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The Raistlin costume is inspired, but there's absolutely NOTHING that can beat a going as a piece of pizza with an axe.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I fully agree, Dan. That is twisted genius. But allow me my gothiness. ;-)

Amy speaks wisdom. :-) Time to reconsider what to do in two weeks time...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

pizza with an axe!!

i went as ms. pac-man last year, and my boyfriend went as pac-man.

this year we are going as mario and princess toadschool.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

halloween in the UK = "don't open to door to any bloody kids" and "keep the lights off so it looks like no one is in". Or is that just anti-fun West London?

Here too. Although being out, even if you actually ARE out and are for more than the evening, provides no exemption from tricks eg eggs all over upper windows that don't open so you can't remove them and have to wait months for the windowcleaners, flattening tyres, spraypaint, firing fireworks at the cat. Bah. Maybe it's all you people who pretend to be out when you aren't that do it. (I hate Halloween. Grr.)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

In my elementary school there were two "popular" girls, Hester and Christy. Every year they went to the local church Halloween party as a pair of dice with top-hats and white gloves. oh HO HO WHO CAN RESIST THE CUTENESS?? They won the top costume prize (or seemed to) every year. Until one year I went dressed as... a COMPUTER. i.e. a big box with cling film across one side and tin foil round the rest of it... actually now that i think on it it was kind of a hybrid stand-up video game and computer.... people would come up and "play" me and i tried to make faces that looked like Centipede or Space Invaders?! surely that is beyond the ken of even the most trained supermime. anyhow i won the prize GO ME.

(p.s. HAUNTED HOUSES!!!!!!! anyone going to one?)
