So, do you at around 4pm have a cup of tea and eat some cakes? (coz I am now, actually I might even have some toast)

Is it as forgotten as elevensies?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I could murder a scone right now, but our office is sadly lacking.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh def classic (elevensies aswell - altho that's usually jst a packet of crisps) have just made myself some coffee, altho sadly i had to resist the lovely celebratory b/day cakes that are in the kitchen and opt for the more healthy apple option! Def dud!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

who bought the cakes?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually brought this topic up in the office today. The assembled parties all voted unanimously in favour of tea, cakes and crumpets at around 4pm each day. A job well done, I feel.

Incidentally, is tea-time a purely British phenomenon?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Tea Time=Dinner Time around here, I was all confuddled at first.

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfortunately, the guy who's b/day it was today bought the cakes! Dud in my opinion. When it's ur b/day u should get given yummy cakes & then if anyone was generous enough to give u any pressies on ur b/day, give them the scraps the next day! ha!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i have family in Ireland who are religious about tea time (haha they're religious about everything) and I tried to bring the custom home with me to no avail. classic. elevensies is out unless stumbling around making the first cup of coffee counts, in which case: happy elevensies.

Tea and cakes are fine if you spend your life walking everywhere, scrubbing floors, mangling clothes, digging fields or running around the playground. If you sit at a desk, staring at a screen all day and also have tea and cakes it can surely only increase the lardiness.

I could murder a scone right now

"and the scone you so fancifully cut
is not succulent, tasty or nice
it's death for no reason
and death for no reason is MURDER"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

My family doesn't have Tea Time. We have Cocktail Hour.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

What time is cocktail hour at? It sounds like an 8pm thing to me.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

around here it's something-or-other past the yard-arm (noonish?)

jones (actual), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Tea time is wonderful! A nice cup of tea (made properly, in a pot mind you) and a plate of cakes or toasted crumpets. Yum. Or even better - making toast in front of a roaring log fire, with a toasting fork cunningly fashioned from a wire coat hanger because you can't find the proper one.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i have tea and chocalate. it's fab!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

they used to call radio shows at around 4.30-5pm "teatime" before the term "drivetime" caught on in Britain, didn't they? Peter Powell on Radio 1, and all that. Andrew Collins still calls his 6 Music show (4-7pm) "Teatime", but that's probably because it isn't on car radios.

I prefer all those teeny tiny meals of the day to the main meals. Elevenses and Tea Time is what keeps me alive, basically. Sometimes I like to call the Elevenses "Smoko".

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 18 October 2002 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Black tea with vanilla extract. Yum.

I want tea and cakes now!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Black tea with strawberry Fox's glacier fruit, followed by minty fag. Yum yum.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I have all these teas at my house I need to start trying. Mm, electric kettle...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Rose tea is best.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Cocktail hour is around 5 o'clock, or when hubby gets home, whichever comes first I think.

Question: I bought a packet of 'English breakfast tea" at Heathrow as I was leaving, is it acceptable to drink this throughout the day? It's good!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

It'll be breakfast time somewhere in the world. Consider yourself a citizen of the world and its many time-zones.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
This is what I had for tea the other day:

One of them got a bit burnt, but I ate it anyway.

Tea Time is the best time.
