I have no car. I like to be driven around. What's in your glove compartment? Do you have a CD player in your car? Is there lots of trash in the backseat? Does it break down much? Does it have a name? Tell me all about your car.

rainy (rainy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

you've seen it rainy!

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 19 October 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah! It's got curtains!

rainy (rainy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I have such a crappy CD player in my car, that when I parked it out on the street one evening & my trunk got pried open with a crowbar, they left my CD player. Heh, I thought it wasn't too bad of one, but it obviously wasn't up to snuff with Seattle's car theives.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 19 October 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

thieves, even.

lyra (lyra), Saturday, 19 October 2002 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i like my car even though he isnt very flash. i call him brian, and he is small, black and somehow manages to continue going on the wiff of petrol i feed him.
he gets a wash if it rains and he is outside, otherwise he likes to grow a layer or four or dirt.
i talk to him, ( yep i know i know ) and he is loyal in return.
i think.

donna (donna), Saturday, 19 October 2002 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a station wagon (meep). it doesnt have either side mirror and is extremely cluttered (trash, but mostly clothes). there is a cd player, i keep nothing in the glove, but i have pictures pinned to the ceiling and any directions ive ever written down on paper in the compartment between the two front seats.
interesting* side note: i got pulled over for speeding yesterday, and the cop said he would give me a break and just give me a traffic citation for something else cheaper.
what he charged me for: obstruction of my windshield. i had a whole bunch of shit (mainly whistles from lifeguarding) hanging from my rear view mirror, and apparently, thats against the law in pennsylvania. who knew?
(*this is probably a lie. most of my stories are not.)

amy (amy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i have the same car as rainy

Honda, Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I drive a pickup truck, but it's only a Ford Ranger which either redeems or negates it depending on how you feel about pickup trucks.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I drive a largish but cheap Hyundai Sonata - it's a really tacky Korean job, but it goes. I've got no CD player, but I often take my Minidisc in the car and use one of those tape-adapter things to listen to it through my car stereo. I've just recently built a portable MP3 player, though, and as soon as I can afford the power supply (AU$100 or so) I'm going to install it in the car boot. (hooray for gigs of mp3s in the car)

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 19 October 2002 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck rainy i was going to ask this same question today! i have a 1972 tr7iumph 2000 automatic cos i love old british cars. my dad drives it at the moment cos i am broke and can't afford to keep it. but its white and has red vinyl interior and a wooden dashboard. yum. my dream car is a hillman superminx. mmmm racing stripes. rainy i'm getting my car back next year, i can drive you round!!!

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 October 2002 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 October 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i have ended up with 4 cars, even though i don't drive.
67 audi, 65 volkswagon variant, '74 peugeot, and 1961 Fiat convertible

H (Heruy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a car. I can't drive. I don't want a car.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 October 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

datsun sunny. horribly old sweets in the glove compartment, flyers for the rally of new zealand and month-old junk mail in the back. tape player not functioning, radio stuck on hauraki.

webber (webber), Saturday, 19 October 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i listened to john peel for the first time in ages driving back from shropshire on thurs night!! haha he played one of the songs he was always playing back when i listened to it every night viz "i don't want my body" by the piranhas

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 19 October 2002 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I have two cars. For every day driving it's a BMW 328i in a dark metallic blackberry-sort-of-colour, with leather seats, air-con (which is just *so* useful in our temperate climate in the UK!), 10 CD changer blah blah. I love it.

Second vehicle is one I have for fun. It's a 1984 Series 3 Stage 1 V8 long-wheelbase Land Rover in Masai Red, which can seat 11 people. I'm 'doing it up' as a sort of hobby, and it's great for a spot of weekend off-roading fun. It's had several bits of bodywork replaced over the past couple of years, and I didn't quite manage to match the paint colour exactly right, so my Landie is known as "Joseph" (coz he has a coat of many colours *groan*)

C J (C J), Saturday, 19 October 2002 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

We don't have cars much in the UK. (I realise the counterevidence of my eyes is compelling, but hardly anyone I know has one). Maybe 'young (ha!), non-careerist people in big cities don't have cars much in the UK' is a more accurate statement.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a metallic blue toyota 'tazz' 1.3 with a 1-cd cd player and v tinny speakers and nice air con. it gets me around just fine, i like it lots. it doesn't have a name (you can help me find one if you want). it needs a cleaning quite badly now.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch, by "you" do you mean me?

rainy (rainy), Saturday, 19 October 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah why not

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a 1973 Triumph called Peg.

***1979*** (***1979***), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

What is its porn star name?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got a gold MGF convertable, strange to have such a car as my first purchase, but there you go. Decent cd player, can hear music clearly with roof off. She's called Lolita.

kinski (kinski), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

My brother and I have a Mitsubishi Carisma, we got it after he parked our old car by the sea and the high tide he was canoeing in came in and filled it. At the time I was raging but we had a great laugh about it last week. Anyway he's moved to Cork for the year now and he didn't want to bring the car with him. There's a broken phone and a Johnny Cash CD in the glove compartment. There's alot of trash in the backseat yeah, crisp bags and empty coke bottles and cigarette packets. I don't have a CD player but I have a lead that hooks my discman into the radio, it's a pretty cool stereo, very good compared to any other ones I've heard but I blew the left speaker when Wham came on one day and I turned it up to full volume.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I am starting to understand why Graham hates Ronan.

I still love him though.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for your support N. I thought he hated me because we were polar opposites.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought he hated you because you were polar bears.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah when I left the polar bear community there was major tension

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Sellout!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 19 October 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i met my first 'Steve' a couple weeks so now it'll just feel like i'm naming the car after him.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 19 October 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a 1988 beige/gold Acura. The owner's manual and a pair of driving gloves are in the glove box. No CD player; there is a tape deck but I don't use it. Not much trash in the backseat; there is some in the trunk and a awful lot in the front passenger seat. It's held up fairly well after some work on the spark plugs earlier this year.

I haven't named this car; it just doesn't seem to have much of a character. I called my previous car Lil' Putt-Putt.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't had a car for almost five years now. I walk to work and can get anywhere else in the city by the TTC - so I only rarely need one. Living in the downtown core means that renting a car for a few days here and there works out to be far cheaper than owning/maintaining/insuring/parking one.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 20 October 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Correction: I have named my current car "The Crapmobile." It's not as bad as the name would suggest.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 20 October 2002 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

hey j.lu, I think I may have the same color Acura! Is it by chance "Tuscan Taupe"?

even after all these years, she runs like a dream.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a dark grey 2000 Mercedes-Benz A160. The best part is the great honking sunroof, which opens vastly for my flaneuristic moments.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Sunday, 20 October 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Felicity: I bought the car used, so I have no idea what Acura would call the color.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 20 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Colin, I thought the bestest thing about your car was that it talks. Are you not getting along?

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 20 October 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a 1992 Honda Accord, color: Magenta. It has a few stupid indie band stickers on the back that I hate. It has some trash in the backseat but yesterday I cleaned it out. I recently got a new stereo, but still have no CD player--I prefer tapes, really. My car's name is Bradley and he used to be quite dependable but a month or so ago he had to get $1,000 worth of repairs. I had to ride the city bus for two weeks, which was funny.

Mandee, Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a 1991 Dodge Dynasty:

http://dodgedynasty.50megs.com/dyno.jpg

I drive a 1988.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I drive a silver '98 buick century. It's a standard issue old-people car and is not mine(but I pretend!). I call it the liz!mobile or the wankerwagen. It goes fast when I want it to, but is sadly lacking a CD player. It's kind of clean right now and only has a giant cardboard cigarette and flyers in the back.

liz! (liz!), Sunday, 20 October 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I have an '88 Holden Commodore. Automatic (hooray!). It's in desperate need of a good clean (I haven't washed it once in the 3-odd years I've had it) but I periodically clean all the crap off the floor. I wish I had a CD player in the car. It got broken into a few weeks ago and all they took was a 40 year old first aid kid and a very bad pair of Hunter S Thompson style sunglasses.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 20 October 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Mandee: we recently switched voices from Woman 2 to Man 1. Woman 2 and I had an understanding -- when she said "turn left in 200 metres", there was affection in her voice. Man 1 just barks order at me.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 21 October 2002 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, Colin, are you upset with me for some reason?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 October 2002 06:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how to drive. If I wanted to, I would have learned how by now. My train pass is very nice, though.

Miss Laura, Monday, 21 October 2002 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

A Ka is a very Sinkah car, though I could imagine him in an ancient Beetle.

As I posted a while back, my old 92 Escort is living on borrowed time. This year the alternator, back brake drums, engine thermostat and water pump have gone, and the clutch is a bit thin. Apart from repairs it IS cheap to run and insure though, so I'm going to carry on until it dies. I reckon I've another year.

The next motor will have to have plenty of nice stuff like aircon, power steering etc. I do 13-15 K miles a year, and it's about time I had a bit more comfort. My heart sez BMW (CJ's would do nicely!) or Audi, but my head and bank balance sez Golf or Laguna or Passat or Peugeot.

I phe4r Momus on this thread, but my 1973 1.3 Beetle called Rita is a wonder to behold. The other day I patched a hole in it with fibreglass and felt very manly.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 21 October 2002 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a '98 volkswagon polo. it's navy and has a tape player (the only tape player i have that's still working). in the glove compartment is the owner's manual, a torch and tons of tapes. i got a car 18 months ago to cut down my commuting time by 15 hours a week but i'm still pretty anti-car. i'd spent the previous 29 years of my life getting around on foot and by public transport and hope to do that again soon. cars are nasty polluting things, and expensive with it.

angela (angela), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i wish i had a mini (old or new model, both are beautiful).
instead, i have a small car: a white fiat cinquecento. very good to drive around the city, but very shitty on the road.

learning to drive is just another one of the things that i never learned to do.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

that sentance is all fucked up. it should read:

learning to drive is just another of those things i have failed to do.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i spelled sentence wrong.

(i'm trying to boost my user rating. shhh)

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

i had to write it down at all the motels i stayed at, so i know i drove a white chevy cavalier for 5 days. happy now?

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

1998 Nissan Sentra, no cd player, no power windows. It basically has a sterring wheel and heat. But, first of the year im going yuppie and buying a new Saab.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't look like the girlie model of a few years back, which is good Dan. If it did I would hope Joei does all the driving.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

My car needs a name too. It's a blue/gray '95 Toyota Corrola sedan. I tried to name my last car Jackie O, but it never caught. It did, however, catch fire - it went out with a bang.
The car I have now has a cd player that is very well-loved and at least 2 busted speakers thanks to me. On a typical day, the backseat floorboard is full of empty drink cans, candy wrappers, cds, maps, an umbrella, and rock show fliers.

I just noticed that that picture is missing Bullet's mini-spoiler. I love that car.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought a silver Audi A4 2.8 Quattro in San Francisco at the height of dot-com mania. I was spending over 3-1/2 hours a day commuting (including the bay bridge - BART was not an option) and it definitely helped make that more bearable. However, nowadays its practical value has diminished and while it is a really nice car, I didn't really buy it to be fancy (and in SF and L.A. it's not that fancy anyway). The payments and insurance are a pain and so now I'm eyeing a VW Golf or one of those Japanese Hybrid-electrics to replace it at half the cost.

I will miss it a little bit though:

http://www.audiworld.com/news/99/2000preview/a4road.jpg

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

OOOH SPENCER FED-EX IT TO ME.

(I'm so fickle.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I have an Isuzu Vehicross. I couldn't bear to go totally yuppie and get a regular SUV so I got a weird one. It rides like a Jeep Wrangler and is very sturdy, a necessity with the road conditions in Philly. Mileage is terrible but I don't drive much (under 5K per year). I generally like to avoid driving but in most parts of the US there are places you simply can't get to without a car. If I move to Tokyo I will not miss having a car (might get a motorcycle if they will let me though...)

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

If I move to Tokyo I will not miss having a car (might get a motorcycle if they will let me though...)

TETSUO!!!!!

Kaneda (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan you know I would, but believe me, the insurance and the payments are a serious pain in the ass.

I was actually looking at a RAV-4 yesterday and it's very sweet. I also looked at the all-electric version which costs over $40K!!! Apparently, the cost is due to the batteries.

In L.A. all the uber-hip environmentally conscious celebs (Spike Jonz, Martin Sheen, Cameron Diaz) are getting little hyrbrid cars (in all three cases the Toyota Prius).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

WOAH. If that got decent gas mileage...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, I like that thing too - especially in all black or in really dark gray. I'm not too keen on the chrome wheels though.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Saab 900i, which I actually paid for. The free one needed too much spent on it, sadly, b/c it was a 4-door hatchbax0r, which I like, coz it loox like a gothick shed on wheelz. The one I'm using is a silver 4-door sedan, with thee 8-valve engine. I do miss thee ludicrous p0wer ov the old green one w/twin-cam engine, but this one is cheaper to insure. It cost me 400 UK pounds and has a full service h!story. Just about any modern car will leave it in the dust, but i don't care too much really. In the glove compartement there is some WD40 and a map. In the back seat are empty crisp pax0rets. It has no CD play0r, but the radio works, so for the first time in years I can recognise most of the songs in the charts. I like Missy Elliot best.

Recently I have started wanting another Wolseley 1100/1300, like my old one that got ripped off.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i drive a 1984 volvo station wagon. i've owned it for about a year and only paid $1.00 for it.

i finally got it on the road last week after a long non-driving hiatus and within 48 hours the following things happened:

1. the stick that controls the left and right turn signals is broken or loose now ... only my left signal light responds.

2. the handle on the hatch somehow broke last night so it does not actually shut properly. anybody can get in my car if they have the sense to open the back.

3. some sort of coolant hose blew at the back of the engine block causing the vehicle to be practically engulfed with smoke while driving down 104th avenue. i was able to fix it with duct tape and electrical tape, but i still have to carry empty 2-litre pop bottles full of water around with me. i can only go for about ten to fifteen minutes without having to pull over and fill it up with water.

4. ever since that happened the car is *LOUD* and it doesn't really go above 50 or 60 km/h without a fight.
