Word Choice

Do you ever choose to use a less accurate word because you can't spell the more accurate one? Do you ever use a shorter word because it will fit on the end of the line whereas the more suitable, but longer word, would cause the line to wrap?

I do. On the one hand I hate to compromise but on the other hand restrictions do seem force extra creativity in some circumstances.

If I don't know how to spell a word I usually look it up, or just live with the misspelt version (and make a mental note to look it up later). Rarely (if ever) will I substitute a less accurate word.

The only reason I'd change my wording for formatting reasons was if I were preparing some sort of document that would be judged greatly on it's design - eg a poster, leaflet, etc.

My god I am a boring cunt.

I just typed a similar response to you Andrew, but the boringness of yours popped up in between and forced me to reconsider. Thank God for nu-ILE.

I mostly look up spellings too but if I'm using a word that's not the base word - like if I'm turning it into an adjective or adverb or whatever then the spelling is not always easy to find. Googling is no good because there are all sorts of dodgy spellings out there.

I usally put an (sp?) if I'm not sure of a spelling.

That's just rub.

:-(

I wouldn't do it for spelling (I am a very good speller), or for word wrap in the midst of text, but when composing titles I might rephrase or recast for a better design - this is often a bit more than changing one word.

i use simpler words when i cant be bothered typing a longer / bigger word or where i feel that the amount of 'big' words is just getting silly ie: a much simpler word says it all so much more easily sometimes.
but i dont do it to fit in the spaces i have available, and my spelling isnt too bad so i usually take the leap.

I do. i just posted on another thread saying that i am such an awful speller (to melcaramel).

I am excellent at spelling, it's just my fingers sometimes get a bit dyslexic when I'm typing (especially after the odd sherbet or three)
