Advice Columns: S/D

Search: Miss Manners. Perfect, intelligent advice with a subtle but sly sense of humor. She points out that behaving well is against human instinct. I think it's particularly useful when she explains a difficult situation and tells you exactly a gentle phrase that may be used to defuse it. I'd be a lot more confused and awkward than I am if I didn't read Miss Manners (somewhat religiously). I'm serious.

Also search: "Since You Asked..." by Cary Tennis at Salon. He only handles relationship advice. I like his style; his sympathy always seems genuine. And he takes time to analyze how a situation may have started and realistic outcomes for it.

Destory: Dear Prudence at Slate. Miss Manners wannabe. Some of her advice I simply don't agree with, and roughly 50% of her responses can be succinctly summarized with the following: "Dump him."

haha, angela, only half?

Miss Manners is wonderful. She uses questions of comportment as a starting point for discussions of morality and social relations. She's particularly good at coming down hard on etiquette bullies who mistake mannered conduct for a means of making other people feel inferior or beholden.

I love Miss Manners so so much. I also love Savage Love on the Onion. And I like the lady who writes parenting advice in the local paper, it's really not stupid advice.

that said destroy dear abby. bleh.

Advice columns in teen mags are comedy gold. A few years ago a friend had a 'best of' book for Sugar's advice column. Some kids are tres dumb

I really like Mink Stole's "Think Mink" advice column, but of course I would!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for the Mink Stole recommendation - good stuff. She reminds me of Dan Savage when she berates someone. It's weird that this is the crazy screaming woman from Desperate Living. I found an archive here:
