New Apple Lust Objects for 2010 and onward

Old thread 14k posts so why not

WWDC is Monday, nobody seems to be expecting anything much. Maybe the Keynote will focus on Swift 3. OS X seems likely to get rebranded as macOS. Music on iPhone and iTunes will both change completely once again, infuriating everyone. New watch bands? Jokes about The Car? Does anyone even want a new Apple product at this point? Will Jimmy Iovine be allowed onstage?

Spottie, Thursday, 9 June 2016 18:02 (seven years ago) link

Nervous that the next MacBook Pro is going to max out at 1TB with non-replaceable storage. They wouldn't do that to us, right? Because when this thing ships in 2017 I'm going to need more than that.

"1 TB should be enough for anyone." -Apple, probably

Your Favorite Album in the Cutout Bin, Thursday, 11 August 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link

As usual, my phone is kind of fucked up just in time for the announcement and I'm just trying to make it last. Screen cracked a couple weeks ago, and it's really hard to make it charge.

My partner picked up a new 2018 model 13" MacBook Pro and I'm jealous at a level I haven't dealt with since the Wall Street iteration of the PowerBook G3 finally got it right. My 15" is a goddamn barge and I'm finding that no model of iPad is an adequate travel substitute.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:25 (five years ago) link

i got a 3400c just before that. jealous years.

j., Monday, 20 August 2018 08:20 (five years ago) link

I always thought the Kanga / 3500 / G3 PowerBook was the ultimate in heartbreak. I had a 5300 though, so I know the worst a PowerBook can be.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 20 August 2018 10:06 (five years ago) link

2018 seems like a good vintage of MacBooks to skip. I'm ready to order a 2019 model now, though.

I like my new MacBook Pro but am alternately cursing Apple for cutting HD space / not taking the +$400 hit and getting 1TB like my old laptop (a 2012 MacBook Pro).

Keyboard is fine but the trackpad sucks.

Touchscreen = I can summon emojis.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 04:56 (five years ago) link

I took my '17 MBP in to get the left speaker fixed (apparently this is a thing) and got one of the new keyboards. I missed the press release on this: https://www.wired.com/story/apple-will-fix-broken-macbook-keyboards/

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 05:04 (five years ago) link

Nope on the replaceable SSD.

I guess I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a fancy new Xs phone but can't make much of a compelling case when my 7 just keeps on going.

Macs TK

I honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

the united app shows your gate and a little countdown to when boarding starts on the “dynamic island” - genuinely useful

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:35 (three months ago) link

It’s just another reason to look at your phone instead of just going to your gate and relaxing

calstars, Sunday, 7 January 2024 22:53 (three months ago) link

United app also gives you a flight tracker of your flight. And remembers your info.

I say this because the AA app didn't do shit.

pplains, Sunday, 7 January 2024 23:38 (three months ago) link

well you’re already looking at your phone, the little indicator just means you don’t have to keep maniacally switching to the united app to make sure you haven’t disastrously misunderstood the boarding time

But it does work on the United app!

pplains, Monday, 8 January 2024 03:05 (three months ago) link

you can connect to united wifi for free.. you can’t do much much but it will update eta, gate etc. and weirdly i got a few updates on various apps like messages and a sports team app that my kids’ coaches uses to inform parents about practices?? very odd to get that sort of notification way up in the air

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 8 January 2024 03:55 (three months ago) link

yeah iirc the free united wifi still allows for push notifications and messaging apps. i think flighty takes advantage of that by updating the app thru what are essentially push notifications

I treated myself to an Apple Studio Display - attainable price through Apple’s refurb store. There’s a lot of tech fetishism going on in /r/macsetups and apparently I’m no longer a voyeur. However, in terms of basic quality of life improvement omg. The demo ones in the store are too aspirational “here’s how great Final Cut Pro looks editing vacation movies of your Dwell family” If you just allowed folks to dock their MBPs and see their shit and whatever it is they do in 5K, they’d sell 5x more.

My first Mac was a Iix, dead square in time when owning a Mac automatically made you a graphic designer and I kept on with it enough to hassle through endless permutations of Radius boards, backbreaking CRTs, fucked up colors, someone unhelpfully saying “have you degaussed it? maybe you should degauss it” and the madness of color matching. All of that b.s. is mercifully GONE. I actually had to do some color matching web work and being able to dock to this and immediately switch off feels like real world science fiction.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 1 February 2024 14:13 (two months ago) link

As a print first guy, I'm still very satisfied with my Eizo. Talk about color matching...pro displays that have hardware calibration (basically Eizo and the nicer BenQs) I can have multiple calibrations and switch through them on the fly. The other day for the first time I used my spectro to measure the paper I'm printing on and calibrated the monitor that. So not just calibrating to a standard display condition, but calibrating to the specific paper I'm printing on within a specific lighting condition.

dan selzer, Thursday, 1 February 2024 15:25 (two months ago) link

The monitor on my G3 used to do this extremely loud degauss every time it was powered on; nearly drowned out the chime

we'd rather embarrass ourselves with VR goggles than kill people outright with self-driving cars.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 28 February 2024 02:00 (one month ago) link

mentioned it elsewhere but I don’t think they were that serious about it, I think they just had CarPlay betas and custom dashes installed and if a car people think
is AI is driving erratically they think that’s cool. it was just CarPlay testers poking at the dashboard while trying to drive normal

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 28 February 2024 03:50 (one month ago) link

default damager (lukas), Wednesday, 28 February 2024 05:38 (one month ago) link

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Wednesday, 28 February 2024 06:24 (one month ago) link

cars are a low-margin business. with next-gen carplay it’s possible that any/every car becomes an “apple car” as far as the dash is concerned. they are doing deals to integrate the speedometer, the a/c etc into the interface. and if your phone can automatically reconnect every time you step into the car.. that’s total lock-in to the apple ecosystem without apple having to go through the frankly thankless business of actually producing automobiles

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 28 February 2024 08:29 (one month ago) link

i rode in a waymo in SF, it was pretty impressive. i can see why it appealed to apple - presumably they have tons of data from apple maps. but man have you ever seen a waymo? no way that would fly with apple.

éľś, Wednesday, 28 February 2024 13:05 (one month ago) link

Apple's been slowly letting practicality win over aesthetics since Ive left. I'm glad they stopped making broken flat keyboards but supposedly the VR glasses were meant to be just cool-looking glasses instead of the gross torture helmet we got.

the bluetooth keyboards where the AA batteries go into the knurled riser on the back are a really excellent example of where apple's obsession with braun-style bauhaus minimalism totally worked. they are just the platonic ideal imo.
