who is the biggest ILX name dropper?

I was in Saint Tropez with some pals recently when one of them said: "You know, there are some frightful name droppers on ILX, wouldn't it be a good idea to start a thread to name and shame them?".

So Brian Eno said "By jove, Lord Suggestion, that's an excellent idea, why don't you start the thread yourself?"

But then Marina Warner pointed out that as I would be getting to a computer first I should start the thread. And at that point Bashir Al-Assad and Martin Amis arrived, and the conversation turned to other things.

So anyway, who is the biggest ILX name dropper?

LS (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Not me, I'm far too modest and discreet!

C J (C J), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I think Suzy has this field pretty much to herself, no? ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Momus, surely. I refer you to:

Pitchfork Strikes Again

among others.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

last night i had drinks with Madame Pompidou's bodyguard!! he wears two watches, one for Paris time and one for New York (!? i asked him 'can't you just subtract six hours' and he acted like he was distracted by something)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i saw patrick moore once!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I am king of this in the comics field! I am comfortable with this as in the wider world these people don't qualify as slebs at all, so there's a level of irony to it. I'm less comfortable when people are actually impressed by someone knowing Mark Millar or someone like that.

I remember one fantastic conversation with a woman I was involved with, where I was going on about meeting Leo Baxendale and Jack Kirby, plus pop 'stars' like John Cooper-Clarke and Wreckless Eric, and all she could come back with was Prince, Spike Lee, Aretha Franklin, Tony Morrison, Denzel Washington...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

More namedropping! I love ILX namedropping.

I watched the Gilmore Girls last night with the guy who wrote the episode. He said the creators of the show changed almost all of his lines. Attention bnw & Mary: In two weeks there's gonna be a "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"-style dance marathon with all the characters.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I can namedrop classical singers and conductors... BUT I WON'T.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I met Bez on Monday. His eyeballs were going in different directions.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I can namedrop classical singers and conductors... BUT I WON'T.

Especially most of us would probably go, "Who?" ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I love namedropping DJs, but I didn't tell my Andy Plump DJ story here cos you'd all go "who", rest assured I told it to EVERYONE ELSE I KNOW. He hugged me outside the venue, it was as if I'd known him all my life!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I know who he is. [and, no Ronan, I haven't met him.]

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

He was such a lovely man, almost as nice as Jacques Lu Cont, the other dj I "spoke to for more than 5 seconds". Then there was the time I said "that was good" to Billy Nasty and he said "thanks". Memorable.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still holding onto a few good name-dropping opportunites. So far I've been discreet.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I know too, Ronan - the Plump DJs are reasonably well known, surely?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i sang with chris knox. hows that fer name droppin?

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont know anyone famous enough to be name-dropped. just waiting for my own fame to spread, that will be enough. then you can all name-drop me!!
" oh yes i knew her on ilx way before she got so famous"

donna (donna), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i once vomited on a cross in front of people who would go on to later form ill-adivised punk bands of lesser repute.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

did they call themselves "the vomits"?

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

sadly not.

i also once repeatedly prank called james garner and marlo thomas, as i believe has been reported on ile before.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

But seriously, me and God, we're like this.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ollie Olsen hit me on the head with a Mintie back in the the early eighties.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O hugged me.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I name drop a lot of my personal friends, as if they were people everyone here knew of. Does this count?

Ally, Thursday, 24 October 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I once tickled Polly Jean Harvey until she came.

Chad Stead (HELLO GOOGLERS!) (synkro), Thursday, 24 October 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Chad's got ME jealous.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Thursday, 24 October 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

If I hung out with any interesting slebs like Eno I'd probably name drop constantly. But I only run into very minor ones, like Kim Mathers in the Best Buy that one time.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 24 October 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i do that thing that ally does.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Thursday, 24 October 2002 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i stood next to the ballboy guy last night while watching vhs or beta. is there a goofier grin-inducingier band than them? they were so cheesy but such great fun. my friend kate said it was like the extended extended remix of the tj hooker theme song, but the kentucky space disco was happenin'.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 24 October 2002 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah i also met the first drummer of sleater-kinney (lora) and bought 2 ninetynine CDs from her. the rest of my namedropping experiences are of nzedders that none of y'all give a shit about.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 24 October 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

oh I've met Lora. She likes my band, apparently.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 October 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I was at a party with Beck's cousin at her apartment in Richmond, VA.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 24 October 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

once i sat next to karl sodastream on marty lucksmith's couch!

minna (minna), Thursday, 24 October 2002 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

don't get me started on namedropping Lucksmiths moments... we could be here all day

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe you were at that party too!

minna (minna), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think i was, but i wish i had been!

I once had coffee & a very nice chat with Trish from Clouds..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

THIS ISN'T NAME DROPPING!!!

ch. (synkro), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

funny how the Dirty's Vicar's intent to shame namedroppers has completely backfired.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay for namedropping pissing contests. I would lose.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 24 October 2002 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Jim would beat me because all my best namedrops are obscuro indie non-stars, but of fifteen years ago.

We've had those Lucksmiths round our house too, mind. Haven't they just been everywhere?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 24 October 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

none of this beats Patrick Moore :)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 October 2002 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't had the Lucksmiths over, but Darren Hanlon has fed me caviar. Minor indie stars are the best I can do too. I've seen Amelia Fletcher in her knickers.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 October 2002 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

As I mentioned once before, Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood used to be in my pub quiz team. When we played the Tandem (a pub in Kennington, just south of Oxford) his brother Jonny came along too (as did Karl from the Candyskins: cue cries of "who?")

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 24 October 2002 08:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I met Kevin Shields in a pub once. He let me finish his pint.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I finished Bruce Dead C's pint once, then he bought me another one. I'd forgotten this enjoyable event as I was buying myself pints as well. Also I met Thurston Moore once (insanely tall and nice) and some other people.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew & I met David Byrne. We spoke to him for a few seconds, then there was an awkward pause, and then he said "I've gotta get out of here" and left.

Keith McD (Keith McD), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone else got any stories about David Byrne, out of interest?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

He was at a Beachwood Sparks gig in Glasgow very recently.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 October 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Beachwood Sparks are... not to my taste.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 24 October 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

*NME*? Are you sure???

Pinefox has made a triumphant return!

Mandee, Friday, 25 October 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

this one's for teeny --> i used to work for J*ff D*chis.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 25 October 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
i met antonin scalia (pre-Bush v. Gore).

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

You still should have kicked him in the nuts.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
You still should have kicked him in the nuts.

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 4 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh i can play this game! i live next door to graeme downes, and we both have the same boss.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 4 May 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

any chance of leaning on him to get Bird-Dog reissued?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 4 May 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

di I am MAD JEALOUS of you

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 4 May 2003 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

haha i would but i am too scared to talk to him cos i am paranoid that he heard me and menelaus the time we were plotting to throw stones on his roof for fun...

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 4 May 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i only spoke to him once since we lived here, me & lisa saw him taking his dog out to have a piss & stopped to talk about dogs for a while.

duane, Monday, 5 May 2003 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i know graeme downes's dog, his name is pete

duane, Monday, 5 May 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope one day to take this title.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 5 May 2003 05:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"pete"?

duane, Monday, 5 May 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"biggest ILX name dropper"

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 5 May 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm

ron (ron), Monday, 5 May 2003 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"pete" is better

duane (lucylurex), Monday, 5 May 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

seconded: Suzy

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Was with someone at a Bill Clinton rally. This guy, Miguel, loved Clinton, so we went up to the front and Miguel presented him with a New Yorker to sign, with a cartoon of Bill on the cover. So Clinton takes both the pen and the New Yorker, airily says "thanks very much for the present"... and walks off with both of them.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha... why does that not suprise me Chuck.

I went with a friend of mine to go party with some friends of his from college who were into film/animation and ended up at the tech crew's wrap-up party for the movie "Waking Life"... I talked to Rich Linklater for a bit... we we're both drunk so it was interesting.

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

...It's not Yanc3y. No, it isn't.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not Hstencil, either.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

you'd be a name-dropper too, jaymc, if you actually had any friends!

hstencil, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Touche!

(sobs uncontrollably)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, bro. But you're my friend! So you can be the friend of a name-dropper, if that helps.

hstencil, Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, I'm two degrees away from semi-famous minimalist composers and avant-rockers! (Okay, I'll stop.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

(you know i'm just teasing you)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoy dropping all of your names.

Sometimes I'll be telling a story about, say, Eyeball Kicks and someone will interrupt with "Eyeball Kicks? Is he related to ____ Kicks? How do you know Eyeball?" and I'll say "I don't know if there's any relation but I know Eyeball from my online cult" and the person will say "Really? What year?" and we will exhaust this line of questioning until the person is satisfied we know no one in common.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

You tell stories about me? Even I don't know any stories about me.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes. For example, I have dined out on this little gem of ours a couple of times.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

My brother punched Soupy Sales.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

my cousin was in a brawl with 5ive in dublin, if that counts. was quite big news, at the time.

darraghmac, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:30 (eighteen years ago)

My brother punched Soupy Sales.

!

latebloomer, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

what was this about?

latebloomer, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

Soup was doing some kind of speech at a convention center in Gatlinburg, TN (this was found out after the violence occured). My brother rear-ended Mr. Sales and they kind of got into it. The license plate said "Soupy."

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

when was this? how old is your brother (and you, I suppose)? please don't tell me your brother punched soupy like, a year ago

akm, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:38 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, about 5-6 years ago? I am 27. My brother is nearly 40, but we are rednecks.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

(He didn't really punch him.)

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

akm, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

your brother is mean

akm, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

I was hoping this was gonna be some fallout at an Iggy Pop concert.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently he was very belligerent! Self defense!!

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

gray rape

gershy, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

your brother can smack the shit out of hunt and tony all he wants

akm, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure Soupy Sales deserved it.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe you should start a thread like this one for your brother Iggy Vs The Corrs

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 30 March 2008 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

haha I was thinking about that bj exchange with Eyeball Kicks the other day, thanks for the reminder roxy.

felicity, Sunday, 30 March 2008 07:10 (eighteen years ago)

really, i just wanted to bump the thread

roxymuzak, Sunday, 30 March 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

i never saw that exchange before but now i heartily endorse it.

blueski, Sunday, 30 March 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)
