are they really worth having?

and does owning own make you a square?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

no because its so expensive.

lets learn to karate chop our veg.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i would love a juicer!!!! waaaay too expensive though

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I wuv my food processor/blender. Don't know where I'd be without it.

I used to have a juicer, but it was impossible to keep clean and it jammed all the time. Plus, you know how much fruit it takes to make one cup of juice? A FREAKING LOT, THAT'S HOW MUCH!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I just have a blender, you can make nearly anything with it that a food processor can do and they're less messy. Also, agree with Jody Beth about juicers. I just don't feel like wasting 10 apples to make a glass of apple juice (nor can I afford it).

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i want a blender more than life itself. :'''(

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a blender but it's el cheapo. What's the point if it's not strong enough to crush ice?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

My blenders are indispensable for two purposes: pureed soups (this week: butternut squash bisque with chipotle and creme fraiche) and homemade mayonnaise. For the former I use an immersion blender; for the latter, a traditional blender. I own a food processor as well, which, has not been used for a year at least.

Juicers are for hippies.

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought a juicer at a yardsale. I used it a lot for the first few months. Haven't used it since. JBR's right, it's a pain in the ass to clean. And I don't even like juice that much.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

we somehow ended up with a hand-me-down breadmaker that's huge and has NEVER been used even once. I hate it. Maybe I should make some bread.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Fresh bread is nummy.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup. There's actually a breadmaker at the house now, but nobody knows if we're actually going to use it much. I must look into this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I am making bread right now, since I am at home "sick" today. It's nice to make freshly made bread, it has a nicer flavor than even most bakery breads.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a food processor that's too small to be properly robust but too big to take up permanent worktop space in my smallish kitchen. I only really use the goblet blender thing which is indispensable; the rest of the function I've found largely useless(I'd just get a good solid but compact blender if I had to choose again). I also have a kind of stick blender thing that you use to liquidise soup in the pan. Once I learned to use it without throwing stock and vegetables up the wall it has proved very useful.

If I had a big enough kitchen though I'd have a huge heavy multipuprpose processor, like my mum's 1970s Kenwood or like this:
http://kitchenaid.suresource.com/itemdetail.asp?uid=2002102314243629&Item=K45SSWH&edp=23410&itemcat=K45SSZZ

(I hope this image works).

Ellie (Ellie), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

since I am at home "sick" today

An understandable approach. Unfortunately a recent example caused problems on my end, but I'll leave it at that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm convinced that every kitchen gadget is beautiful in it's own way.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got a blender (and believe me it does crush ice; I only use it to make frappucinos and frozen daiquiris and margaritas. I have a bread machine and used to use it regularly, but the last loaf came out horrible and I haven't cared enough to either have it repaired or get rid of it. The kitchen whatsit I use most has got to be the steamer...mmmmmm...steamed rice/asparagus/spinach/etc.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the industrial-grade juicers they have at Korean delis. They look like incinerator chutes and make a great whirring noise.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought my first blender, and it's a sooper powerful one that crushes ice and everything. Very very useful for making fluffy icy cocktails and margaritas. Mmmm alcoholic smoothies.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

my uber-sexy kitchenaid mixer could whup all y'all's asses

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i need a proper food processor, which can do meat

mark s (mark s), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

david and i had a bright red kitchen maid mixer processor type thing, hot asa whores cunt it was.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 28 October 2002 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Cuisinart food processer and stick blender, both of which have been very handy. I aspire to a Kitchenaid mixer.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a small spoon.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 3 November 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourite post of the week, right there.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 3 November 2002 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you.

(It is very, very small though. I mean, like, literally smaller than a teaspoon. Yeeah)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 3 November 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"Graham's tiny spoon" sounds like a low-level spell in D&D 3rd edition.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 3 November 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

I've just bought an 800 watt processor thing and I couldn't be happier.
Although the only thing I've made so far is this utterly amazing Lebanese garlic sauce (toum).

Was too tasty on roast potatoes. srsly.

Wand-style blender/processor/mixer=supercool

Oilyrags, Thursday, 5 July 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Either I bought the world's most inefficient juicer or squeezing your own orange juice is a 'not gonna happen' proposition.

milo z, Thursday, 5 July 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

I rarely use my juicer and breadmaker anymore. :-( The foodprocessor turned out to be crap, so I use a cheapo multi-functional mixer.

nathalie, Thursday, 5 July 2007 07:25 (eighteen years ago)

milo get something like this -

http://www.johnlewis.com/jl_assets/product/230205090.jpg

they are cheap, they make orange juice and they're EZ to clean

Ed, Thursday, 5 July 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

i have a wand thing and find that, while excellent for things like salad dressing or marinade, i need to get something a little bigger and/or stronger for things like hummus or a larger job like pureeing for soup, etc.

tehresa, Thursday, 5 July 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

I have a wand thing too, but my nu processor definately takes precedence.

Drooone, Friday, 6 July 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

We had some blender thread on here where Sam and I had to point out to Ally that blenders are needed so margaritas can be made. (Just used mine earlier this evening to make some pesto and no, I don't care that it's not 'traditional' that way.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 July 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

How d you mean, not traditional?

nathalie, Friday, 6 July 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

the name pesto refers to the pestle and mortar with which it should be made

Ed, Friday, 6 July 2007 08:19 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

It is finally time, and there are SO MANY OF THEM!!! I know I want a Cuisinart, and I was going to get one of the 7-cup models but am also considering the standard 12-cup ones. I'm just afraid that when I make smaller batches of things it'll just become a film on the bottom/sides of the machine. I'm considering the Elite 12-cup which also comes with a smaller 4-cup bowl, but I've heard that the flared bowl is problematic and that things get caught in the seam.

I desperately need personal recommendations and advice!

some recent discussion here:

rolling nutrition nazis 2010

lately the fruit I've been buying has been so good by itself I can't bear putting it into a blender. hope the trend continues, tbh.

⚖ on my truck (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

Oh I should point out I'm talkin baout food processors.

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

i have the small 7-cup cuisinart and a stick blender for soups/odd-sized jobs and it's all i need.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

What do you think you'll use it for the most?

I only have the tiny grind/chop Cuisinart Mini-Prep, for making pesto.

Jaq, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

I'll make hummus and cashew cream/nut things, and I know I'll use it for other things but can't think of them off the top of my head. I just keep trying to make recipes and can't coz they call for pureeing things in a food processor, and blenders just don't cut it. I should note that I already have a stand mixer with a dough hook, so I won't need this for any dough stuff.

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

The KitchenAid ones were rated highest by Cooks Illustrated (but that was 6 years ago, 2004) - they've got one with a 9 cup and 4 cup bowl. That seems really versatile. But the larger ones (of any brand) have the more powerful motors (720W vs. 500W) that you would probably want for nut butters. Something to think about with the bigger bowls - it would be easier to maneuver a spatula around to scrape the sides down.

Jaq, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

Oh I'm also limited to what's in stock at Kohls.com since that's where my mom works and thusly gets mad discounts.

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

I think I'd go for the most powerful motor one, even if it's a gigantic 14 cup bowl - you can always scrape the sides down if you're processing a smaller batch of stuff.

Jaq, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

I have a 3-cup Cuisinart, looks like they call it a Handy-Prep though I swear mine has some ridiculous name like Little Chef or something. I got it when I thought I would be just cooking for myself any more, shrug. Now I kind of wish I had a bigger one, but, well. It does have an orange juicer attachment and a thing so you can shred into a bigger bowl.
I found that making hummus used to burn out the motors on my blenders too quickly.
I have my mother's old Sunbeam Mixmaster from 1956. It is pink and black and has tailfins! :D
Oh and an immersion blender that I don't use enough. It's here somewhere...

clay/tone nut/mother (doo dah), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

have a huge, old cuisinart from like 1980. it's a tank. passed along to me by my mom a decade back. weighs about 20 pounds, thick plastic hide is liberally stained and yellowed, have replaced the blade and bowl a couple times. nothing can kill this machine. it's cranked out hundreds of pounds of hummus over the years, has never encountered anything it can't instantly render into pulp. feel i could use it as a ship's anchor and not slow it down.

Will it chop up a ship's anchor?

Grisly Addams (WmC), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

yes

the other is a black gay gentleman from Los Angeles (contenderizer), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

I am in love with my food processor. I have the Kitchenaid 7-cup. I make hummus, dressings, nut butter, veggie burgers. I use it at least every other day, sometimes multiple times in a day.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:09 (sixteen years ago)

yo i got the 3c one like doo dah. it's fine for salsas, curry pastes, or pesto as that's what i mostly use it for. i sometimes wish i had the bigger version, but have one of them immersion blender thingys which kicks it nice for the bigger volumes. when i make hummus i just mash them like potato or use my food mill

fuck BP in the ass, seriously (jdchurchill), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

thing about hummus is that it only gets better as it gets smoother. i let the machine run for like 15, 20 minutes, and let me tell u...

The Clegg Effect (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

hII, do you ever wish you had the bigger 12-cup model? Is there any time you run out of room?

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

i have only wished that one time, when I was making a double recipe of hummus for two classes of 20 ppl each. Unless you cook for a large family regularly, I don't think you would need the big one. 7 cup is more than enough for me.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 11:52 (sixteen years ago)

OK for example, today I had to process 1/2c cashews w/ 1/4c lemon juice. Would this be too little for a 12c processor? Like would the bowl be too big to blend it all nicely? I do not know these things.

Tori, I must seem greatly intriguing (Stevie D), Thursday, 10 June 2010 04:01 (sixteen years ago)

i have an 11 cup magimix and it would be fine for that, i'd just have to scrape the bowl sides down once or twice.

i use mine almost every day at least once, i hardly ever cook without it. i keep it on the countertop so it's always ready to go; i think if i had to haul it out of a cupboard i would use it way less.

estela, Thursday, 10 June 2010 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

Hummus is about making a smooth emulsion with the tahini first.
