Kieslowski's DEKALOG (or DECALOGUE)

Re-released in arthouses and due on Criterion... never knew this:

For years, many of us assumed that Kieslowski and Piesiewicz had built each installment around a specific commandment. So, for example, the above episode seemed rooted in (duh) "Thou shalt not kill," while the opening story, about a boy who drowns in a frozen lake after his father's computer tells him the ice is safe for skating, came from "Thou shalt not have other gods before me," and so on. Turns out that was not the case. Instead, critics at Cannes had insisted that the filmmakers clarify this, and so Kieslowski and Piesiewicz felt pressured, against their will, to assign a commandment to each episode.

and he withholds the comedy til Ten. Still I laughed (some) throughout, esp at the mortification of the postal stalker in Six. "That's what love is. There's a towel in the bathroom."

So yes, this is pretty much as great as I didn't remember it was. Only had a week with the Criterion set, some good extras, incl in the booklet.

I saw them in reverse order - he really looks like the frontman/second guitarist of a moderately successful alt/indie rock band in the mid90s. kinda Mark Iboldy.

having just watched this all for the first time, a few tower over the others: I, IV, and VII. the proto-Three Colors cinematography in V is great but fuck that's not one I'm going to watch again soon.
