when does sisko grow the goatee
― mookieproof, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:21 (seven years ago) link
i forget but he has it by season 4
you do have to start from the beginning but if you really wanted to you could probably skip all of the season 1 episodes that aren't about the Bajoran/Cardassian political situation. i think season 2 is actually pretty solid.
you can skip the Quark/Ferengi episodes at all points, most of them are pretty lame and none are essential to the story arcs iirc. the one in season 6 that had Iggy Pop in it is the only one i would watch again

a while back i compiled four lists of the most-recommended ds9 episodes (from geek.com, medium.com, thr.com, reddit.com/daystrominstitute, trekbbs.com/daystrominstitute) and came up with a weighted stack of best-loved episodes – season 3 onward. have at it: http://bit.ly/2nObGKu

Don't skip Vic/holosuite eps either. Don't you dare.
― Jeff, Friday, 24 March 2017 00:50 (seven years ago) link
there is maybe one inessential one, but the "Nog returns from war" one is among the best episodes
― mh 😏, Friday, 24 March 2017 00:51 (seven years ago) link
I only recommend skipping one episode.

omg who the hell cut these promos
I remember watching them and ignoring the tone and voiceover to try to figure out who the main characters in the episode would be and a hint as to the plot

Still waiting for the third season leap in quality. Dax's featured character episodes reveal her to be a charisma vacuum, and boy am I tired of the running 'gag' of the Ferengi's brutal oppression of their women. Just had to sit through Jake apologising to Nog for being offended when he treated their partners on a double date like shit.
The ol' stranded back in time double bill was ok though, kudos for some creativity in actually setting it in our future.

such a great show, started a couple months ago and am nearing the end of S3 now
― clouds, Monday, 24 April 2017 12:31 (seven years ago) link
i've watched nearly the whole first season now and idk
imo the only *good* episode was the one with kira trying to evacuate the dude from the moon they were going to energy-tap
i guess every show needs a grumpy competent dude who's secretly nice, but in odo and o'brien we have two
quark is okay, but they keep fucking with his character -- sometimes he's arranging a hijacking, the rest of the time he's secretly a good guy who loves our hu-mans. nog and all of the rest of the ferengi suck
never has a creature with the experiences of a dozen lives been as boring as dax. bashir is a puppy. kira moves from shrillness to shrillness, but that one episode was cool and showed promise
sisko is awesome; keep waiting for him to give someone the d'onofrio head tilt when he issues orders
jake is cool too but i am not a child and do not care about his scamming on girls with dumbass nog
oh hey this evil genius discovered a way to transfer his soul into another person's body and then dax figured it out in a few hours and then we never heard of it again. oh hey these gamma quadrant ppl discovered a way to make everyone eternal with nanobots but we're just going to leave the bajoran high priestess here and gtfo
idk man

mmm imagine basing your opinion of TNG off the first season

also at some point TNG ends and DS9 gets all of the writers from TNG and the writing gets 10^6 times better

tbf the cardassian tailor was cool and my understanding is that he becomes a more important (if less gay) character
otoh my next episode to watch apparently involves lwaxana troi hitting on odo

oh hey we are being invaded by aliens whose attack involves manifesting our (most boring) imaginations but it's not really an attack it's just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ with little people and plump japanese baseball players

With the first season, it was obvious they didn't yet know what kind of a series they were doing... They did plant some seeds for longer story arcs with the Bajoran/Cardassian situation, with Sisko's relationship to the wormhole aliens, and with the mystery of Odo's origin, but mostly the episodes were TNG style standalone stories, only with Weird Space Encounter of the Week being replaced with Weird Gamma Quadrant Visitor of the Week. But during the second season they do start to build longer arcs, and the 2nd season finale/3rd season opener introduces elements that will define the rest of the series. From the 3rd to 6th season the quality remains almost constantly good, it's the best stretch of Trek I've ever seen. (Season 7 is not bad either, but unfortunately the P**-Wr**** storyline is silly and feels completely out of place in Trek.)
nog and all of the rest of the ferengi suck
I'm hoping you will change your mind once they start properly developing Nog and Rom too. The scene with Nog in Sisko's office (won't say more not to spoil it, but those of you who've seen it will know what I mean) especially is one of the strongest moments in all of Star Trek, it made me cry.
― Tuomas, Sunday, 21 May 2017 12:36 (seven years ago) link
was that before or after he was a humongous misogynistic dick on the double date and then jake apologised for getting offended?I mean I am looking forward to federation nog or wherever they're going with that, but c'mon.
― ledge, Sunday, 21 May 2017 13:38 (seven years ago) link
starfleet nog I mean.
this turned out to be one of my favorite episodes. it's sweet but also pretty weird. feel like Lwaxana episodes start off bottom-barrel in TNG and get better and better from there.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 21 May 2017 16:32 (seven years ago) link

OTM. Like a lot of fans, I dreaded the DS9 Lwaxana episodes, but they're good! They start off as light comedy and show a little bit of heart too.

the one where she causes the crew to all get horny for each other is one of the more embarrassing ds9 eps. the one(s?) about her and odo are fine tho
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 00:35 (six years ago) link
that one was fucking hilarious what are you saying
― clouds, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 14:38 (six years ago) link
choose yr adventure!
something (does it come through the wormhole? almost certainly)
a) makes everyone unable to speak coherentlyb) makes it possible to transfer one's soul to another body by touchc) makes imaginations manifest in physical formd) makes the station computer turn into a puppye) possesses (just) the command staff and makes them replay an ages-old mutiny
every lwaxana episode involves her transformation from being an absurd nightmare to being a decent person. you'd think an empath might have figured out that people hate the absurd persona by now? at least on ds9 there's no one to call 'little one'
e) was good -- any opportunity for sisko to act weird is cool with me -- but also a huge missed opportunity imo. the other characters should have gotten much weirder than they did -- dax being scatterbrained/o'brien being grumpier/kira being shriller was useless. at least data didn't have to portray the entire mayan pantheon by himself, i guess
you're goddamn right i'm gonna show up here and slag the dumb episodes until i give up, except maybe i won't give up because i secretly like it

s02
three-parter with the return of the resistance 'hero' from cardassian prison camp/frank langella bajoran rebellion was okay. langella and the arch-conservative vedek lady were great. resistance hero dude was kind of lame, as was his death. considering they spent three episodes on it, a lot of stuff seemed awfully perfunctory -- we never even saw langella's downfall, which didn't really seem certain
misfit trill steals jadzia's dax: this was fine -- the misfit trill actor was v. good -- but the fact that quark let the bad guys onto the station and was never punished in any way was bullshit
cardassian orphan boy raised by bajorans: does garak the cardassian tailor need a runabout to go to bajor? by all means, give it to him -- no need to ask why. the whole idea of cardassians leaving orphans behind when evacuating bajor is silly, but the most fucked up thing is that at the end sisko made the kid leave his home and go to cardassia when he didn't want to. maybe as the child of divorced parents i'm overly sensitive but fuck you benjamin
― mookieproof, Thursday, 8 June 2017 00:33 (six years ago) link
Yeah that was bad - same ending as TOS Charlie X!
the misfit trill actor was v. good
He played Lex Luthor's dad in Smallville.
Started season 4, although there were some good ones in 3 it feels like the leap in quality has finally happened, even though the one I just watched (05) was transparent emotional manipulation in service of contrived character development.
