Who's going? And how on Earth do you get there from East London?

DG, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK the Mega Plan is:

From 7.30-10.00 Thursday (earlier if anyone can make it) - Drinking in The Pub, The Plain, Oxford (The Plain being the big roundabout before Magdalen Bridge, coming in from the East). I'll be leaving at 9.30 to help set up the DJ stuff.

From 10:00 on, Club Sussed at Club Latino, which handily is just over the road from The Pub, on St.Clements.

The buses from London are 24 hours, there are 2 of them, and they both leave from Victoria, though you can catch them at Marble Arch and Baker Street (the blue one), or at Marble Arch, Notting Hill or Shepherd's Bush (the red one). They stop just outside the pub and club, very usefully.

So the answer is, go to Victoria and get on a bus!

Tom, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK, hooray, there are things planned, guess I was asking on the wrong list. I will be there! It may also be the first time I will drink in several months, so please nobody laugh at me as a lightweight if I have one pint and fall on the floor.

Riding the red bus...

masonic boom, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Hmm...I might well turn up, providing I can find some easy way of getting to Trafalgar Square/ Oxford Street from Victoria. I don't fancy the idea of wandering around London on my own at 3am much.

DG, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually, a couple more questions: 1) Bus tickets - pay the driver or book in advance? 2) If anyone else here is going from London, why not all meet up and get the bus en masse?

DG, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You can pay the driver on the bus. I'd offer to meet at Victoria, but I'm going to be going down quite early in the day, as I want to run around and look at the pretty picturesques in Oxford during the afternoon. (Oxford is an absolute goldmine for an architecture nut like me. I've *got* to go back to that Medieval pub that's built into the city wall.)

masonic boom, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pay the driver. It's £8 for a 24 hour return.

Tom, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

As my mum would say, "Okie-dokie". Looks like I'm commited then.

DG, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, let me also say this: it is payday for the publisher of FT (this Lord Gnome-esque figure being me) so anyone making the trek up from London can claim a FREE DRINK off me in the pub. Right of veto reserved if drink is too expensive or embarrassing (sorry, no Mirage).

Tom, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

K-reg will be in attendance, despite recent absence.

K-reg, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gawd bless yer kids, it's enough to make a small dj very happy :) see you all on thursday then!!

carsmilesteve, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

My computer's going in for repairs tomorrow, so I won't be around for a bit, so I'll just say I should be turning up, perhaps even with my friend the divine LC. See you there!

DG, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

oxford thursday is unlikely for me, so you'll all just have to soldier on without me. next one in london, when?

gareth, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And how the fuck are ally and i supposed to get there?

Geoff, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can only come if Pete brings me as I cannot be trusted to travel alone.

And Tom you got the name of the club wrong. It's Club Latrino remember.

Just to stir a bit too..... if it's gonna be nice weather (which it probably is) why not go to the Angel where you can sit outside? Us city folk like all that shit.

Emma, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Come on Pete, show a lady a good time.

Shock revelation: I do not actually own a copy of "Baby One More Time", so this will be the one record I will buy in advance of tomorrow nite's festivities.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can't believe this... I have a freaking Drs. Appointment in Brixton at 9.30 the next morning. What do I do, what do I dooooo?

1) Stay up all night, catch the 5 am red-eye back to London and hopelessly try to convince my doctor that I really am perfectly well and healthy on no sleep with a massive hangover from drinking, dancing and carousing all night

or

2) Get the bus back at the shameful hour of 11pm, leaving Sussed before it even hits its full swing, and get back into London in time to get the last train back to Tooting for a good night's sleep.

Aaahhh... decisions, decisions... what do I doooooo?!?!?!?

masonic boom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I shall be catching the red bus from notting hill around 4.30 if anyone wants to meet up and show me how to find the pub.

Tom, if you're having britney, can I have spiller?

cabbage, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It is very very easy to find the pub. It is on the huge roundabout just as you head towards the High Street from St Clements. Ask the nice driver where to let you off.

Tom, why don't you broadcast your mobile number so everyone can find you (or maybe not eh......)

Emma, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ahhh I think I know the very pub, is it the one where the point is?

If so I have no worries :-)

see lots of you on Thursday

cabbage, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes indeed Cabbage, it is the pub under the point. I'm getting quite excited now, i've been nervous all week that no one was coming, but if a you lot can make it from divers parts of london, surely staggering down cowley rd can't be too much to ask (famous last words, i know...). Oh and if Tom's have baby one more time and Cabbage is having spiller i'm having AN ENTIRE HOUR OF WEDDING PRESENT, this *is* meant to be indieschmindie boys ;)

CarsmileSteve, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Indiescmindie my arse. If you don't play any Carpenters I'm not coming.

Oh alright Emma, I'll show you a good time - but I might toy with staying over in Oxford rather than the long midnight - 2:am trek back to Crouch End. So we may have to come to an accomodation (or find some...)

Pete, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When I was in Oxford I found people to be very accommodating, fnar fnar.

I know! Let's take a tent and put it up in the Park 'n' Ride Car park and have a small festival seeing as how Glastonbury's off this weekend.

Emma, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a feeling this uncharacteristic enthusiasm of yours may well have something to do with you not having a beer since last Friday's drinking session / aborted attempt to cross the Millenium Bridge. (But watch out beam of light watchers, we will be back with a ladder next time).

Pete, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Look here O fellow DJs, if you didnt want Britney then perhaps you should not have put her ON THE FLYER. Anyway I'm now back with a copy of "...Baby One More Time" the album, almost worth paying the money I did for an opportunity to hear the astonishing "E-Mail My Heart".

I have also learned an exciting fact which is that St Clements is flooded and so buses are right now non-stopping - they might well have sorted that out by tomorrow, but otherwise the thing to do is not get off the bus until it gets to the centre, then walk down the High Street and over Magdelen Bridge and you'll be on The Plain which is where both pub and club are.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Isn't Club Latrino at the lowest point of St.Clements and therefore likely to be flooded as well?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"flooded" a bit of a misnomer, sorry. What's happened is a pipe or something has burst and they've closed the road while they sort it out, so the buses can't go near it. The drainage is pretty good so there's little danger that Latrino's is underwater. Might be worth giving them a ring, o fellow DJs with phone number....

Tom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i will be pleased to host a secondary party at my apartment on prince of wales at hog's back in ottawa[1]. we will celebrate by drinking vodka and listening to nelly's country grammar. all londoners are welcome to attend after the initial party reaches its end. please send a msg if you're coming, however. i promise to be on my best behaviour.

--

[1]this location is flexible. i am quite willing to try somewhere else provided a) it is in the greater ottawa area b)vodka and nelly are available.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK, so the broken pipe is a good couple of hundred yards up the road at least, so i'm sure the basement of LALALA-TINOS won't be affected at all, oh no, not a chance (eek!) may i suggest wellies to recreate that true glasto vibe ;) and yes i did put britney on the flyer, so i guess it's all my fault for encouraging them...

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm a staunch Angel & Greyhound man but I might pop my head in on the way back from London tomorrow eve. How will I recognise you all?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'll be the guy in a black shirt with a black beard looking knackered.

We'll look like a bunch of twentysomething indie kids, I think it is safe to say.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

HAHAHA Tom will look like the one who used to be in Bedhead.

Josh, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a big strawberry on my chest.

Emma, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Shall i bring the cream then...

Pete, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Pete, I have just vomited all over my keyboard. You are a very sick puppy and I do not want to share an Oxford Tube with you any more.

Emma, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

DJ Carsmile has checked out the water pipe thing and it is AOK. So come one come all!

Tom, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tom, didn't you read what Pete said? He is certainly planning to come.

Emma, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have a nice time, all: I have a pre-set date staying in with Bod and Buffy and V who has a PhD in Lacan. Next time I shall bring them all with me. Plus cookies.

mark s, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Okay kids, I'm on my way. With a copy of All The Way To Memphis, Evolution Control Committee's Public Enemy mixes and of course Thurman's She's A Man.

Bootylicious indeed.

Pete, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Blimey.

Tom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Was it good then? I would have been there were it not for the large hangover accquired from the indulgences of the previous evening.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah it was, I think. Nice meeting DG and K-Reg again, and Marcello for the first time (sorry that my DJing duties prevented me chatting longer, you lot). The Lunnun indie scene was ably represented by Starry and Lixi, the FT Posse were in as full effect as could be expected, the DJing was superb except for my bits, ha, we forced poor Carsmile to play "One More Time" and I would offer my apologies except it was brilliant. "BABY One More Time" was also played, as were "Overload" and "Get Ur Freak On" and a fair few other FT classix (and a LOT of B&S. And NO Radiohead). A lot of drink was drunk. Oh yeah and the club was flooded and the turntables didn't work. But we rocked the place notwithstanding.

Tom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ARGH!!! B&S&M?!?!? Crap! I always judge how crap a club is by how MUCH Belle and Suckasstian they play. If they play more than 3 different songs in an evening, it's a crap club.

Ah well. I will be at the next one, no doubt, dragging Paul *and* some crap CDs which I will *make* the DJs play. (If we can get the Scooby Doo theme played at Tigermilking, we can get anything played anywhere...)

Sounds like a good night was had. I'm jealous. But at least it was good news at the Dr. (Though for missing such a night of fun, I feel almost chizzed that I was declared healthy.)

masonic boom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Just to say thank you to those of you who turned up. Obviously my ploy of only inviting borderline alcoholics worked, as little eastern european geezer who runs the place was well happy :) The publicity drive starts *here* for July 5 ;) Right i'm off to the pub with cabbage to play pool, YAY for days off.

carsmilesteve, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thank you all for a wonderful evening, it was great to see you little horrors again, and meet a few new ones. I would have stayed longer but the divine LC was feeling ill and tired etc, so we had to leave, chiz chiz. She had a great evening (apart from her headache), thought you were all lovely and intends to start posting at some point, though she's a bit worried about the time-consuming aspect of these boards. What's happening in July then?

DG, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

It was lovely larks, I'll defintely be coming to the next installation. The Belle & Sebastian parts were GUD, I'm quite surprised you haven't got round to calling them "Bell End Semen Stain" just yet - that was doing the rounds a while back. Hush your mouth. Nice to meet up with the Focus Group funsters again, also nice to split a bottle of wine on the coach and then drink SANGRIA and GIN and TONIC! People in Oxford don't dance enough really, do they?

Less Morrisey next time though, huh?

And shoot whoever played Spearmint! Not to kill, cos it was probably Steve, and I do love Steve.

YARS.

(chuffin heck, posted more in the last two minutes than i have for the last 5 months no doubt)

sarah, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't know why I love the phrase "Belle and Suckasstian" so much, because, you know, ultimately, I really don't actually mind their music that much, as evidenced by my contributions to the "Boy With Arab Strap" thread over thar on that thar other board.

I think it's because one of my bestest friends in the world, the Divine Miss Cat, (a fellow devotee of sugary girlfriend and actually a not so secret GOFF) also has a boyfriend (wait, they're married now) similarly obsessed with wibbling twee and C86 feypop as my boy Paul. She started slagging off "Belle and Suckasstian" and "B&S&M" and such, and it was just so hysterical that I can't stop using it. Really, I intend no offense. It just cracks me up, I guess you'd have to know Cat and know how funny she is to understand why.

masonic boom, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

As a humble request from the Bitter Bastard, to be reemphasized when August rolls around and The Great Shindig happens:

No Belle and Sebastian. AT ALL.

Thank you, drive through.
