my family had two goldfish named carmine and bleecker, so name because that's the intersection where my sister won them, at a street fair ("our lady of pompeii" i think). they both died. we got new ones. we called them carmine II and bleecker II. we made it to carmine III and bleecker IV when we decided to discreetly drop their numerary suffixes.... it was okay, they didn't seem to notice

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 25 October 2002 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

oh they were probably quite incensed when they first found out, but then would have forgotten 3 seconds later anyway

hey james - one of my first golfish was called darth vader. the other one wasn't called action jackson though, it was called chewbacca.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 25 October 2002 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

micheal

i had a goldfish called darth vadar as well - it was a black (natch) bug eyed thing - we put it in with two regular goldfish and they ripped chunks out of him - so fast in fact we couldnt do anything to save him - it was like return of the jedi - a slain and weak dv at his end (dunno if he had a son) he is buried near the path of my mums old house so no funeral pyer.

basically i'd like the memory of that plucky bugger to live on

james (james), Friday, 25 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

remarkably, under the circumstances, my darth vader and chewbacca never fought. i think dv admired chewbacca's physicality while chewie was a bit in awe of darth's mental strength. they just decided "hey, we're gonna be stuck here together for, you know, 10 seconds, we may as well just get along.

I once had a beta (siamese fighting fish) named Sir Petra Darling. I pretended he was a glam fish artist/rockstar. I never had a goldfish. Hmmm.... What about Goldie Hawn? For the ugly one? Or just name him after Goldie - he's not too attractive either... not that your fish are ugly...

Why do people still think that goldfish only have a five second memory? We've got three goldfish (Shorts, Whitey, and James) and not only do they get excited when they hear the front door open because they think it's time for food, but they can tell the difference between me and Bloke. When he approached the tank, they think it's time for cleaning and gravel hoovering and they hide behind their rock. When I come over, they reckon it's food time and they come up to the surface to be fed. They're great.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My goldfish died :( I miss him swimming expectantly up to the top of the water and gawping at me. Silly fish. I might get a couple of small ones soon though, and then I will require good names. In fact, with goldfish the names are more important than the fish.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeh, they don't have a 5 second memory. Rolf Harris porved it by science on the telly about a month ago (on that Pet Intelligence bollox).

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

He porved a goldfish? (Let's hope the goldfish remembers him next time).

Me and my sister had two goldfish in a tank. One was called "Fishious" and the other was called "Tiny".

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

gem (trisk), Friday, 25 June 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Accent Monkey, the figure I remember from an obscure paper delivered at an international psychology conference in 1988 was 30 secs, not 5 secs. You might like to try some experiments however, by attempting to condition swimming to the surface under a variety of durations. I think the CS would be you opening the door and the UCS the food. The conditioned response would of course be the swimming to the surface.

You may like some further reading on this fascinating question. Japan is the leader in the field, with many interesting experiments with goldfish coming out there. Here's a classic paper:

Right, I've killed this thread stone dead.

Scene from my childhood:

(A pet shop: Colin and his dad peer into a fish tank)

Dad: That fish is dead.

Pet shop employee: No, he's just sleeping I think.

Dad: Goldfish don't sleep on their backs on the bottom of the tank! He's dead!

I swear I am not making this up.

Yes, I have seen the Monte Python sketch.
