a mistake is not a sin. and hanging out in the company of sinners is also not a sin (tho it's probably a bad idea in general since you can start to adopt the beliefs and ethos of the people you habitually find yourself among).

Again, you Americans have so weird responses when it comes to racism and fascism.

― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 23:12 (six years ago) link
There's just nothing to argue. Either you see racism/fascism as a personal blemish that you have to actively put on yourself, or you see it as a structural blemish you have some sort of personal responsibility to combat. And on here it feels as if it's always the first, and unless it's 150% obvious that someone has put this blemish on themself we should always give them the benefit of the doubt. And there's kinda no common ground to argue this.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 January 2018 23:20 (six years ago) link
Talking about 'sin' 'moral failures' and 'personal vices' is just obfuscation, imo, from the very clear and simple point that hanging around with fascists is, well, shitty.

anyway if Manning was unrepentant or didn't get the gravity of what had happened I might understand Fred's lack of sympathy but that's clearly not the case. sorry if it lessens my antifa cred that I'm willing to give a bit more leeway to and be more patient with someone who's been through what she has

she spent 7 years being tortured in a lawless prison for leaking state secrets. she's not a fucking fascist cos she went to a single party. her "gathering intel" line was probably to appease performative jackasses like Fred B who apparently have no qualms about entirely dismissing a trans victim of state abusive as a fascist if it makes him look good.

someone said it above but I agree she's probably terribly traumatized and honestly hope she does not try to enter the incredibly toxic work of running a campaign right now, like Kickstart as a trip to the beach and read books

the notion of them as tryhard edgelord coke bros gets weirder to me every time there's a 20-minute discussion of arcane government procedure or ann hourlong history lesson or tim faust coming on to talk health justice, to name a few examples. there are a lot of valid criticisms to make about the whole phenomenon (folks on the subreddit were bitching about inaccuracies and wild conflations in matt's solo history episode), including plenty made on here, just not sure how many of them are coming from people who actually listened

I think it's unproductive to ascribe nefarious motives to Favreau's stance here, that he's primarily concerned with carving out a professional niche for himself and his ilk in the future healthcare landscape as opposed to his stance just representing a disagreement on tactics/approach/pragmatism. but I also think he's dead wrong, the time for Medicare for All is right fucking now.
― evol j, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 21:22 (six years ago) link
im sure the group jonfav is joining is sketchy and neoliberal or whatever but it does annoys me when ppl seem think you just push a button that says universal ur a puny moral feeb if you raise questions about policy. single payer isnt even the most socialist healthcare it actually has the potential to be p neolib
― flopson, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 21:30 (six years ago) link
it's hard to say nefarious or not because those people literally don't know any other way to "solve" problems, they are technocrats. But I wouldn't be surprised if he very sincerely thinks "oh no, this medicare for all movement is so extremist and simplistic, we need to *think* our way out of this problem and find sensible solutions" as though that isn't exactly what obamacare made a herculean effort to do and still failed to do.

I liked their commentary on the super bowl commercials, that hyundai ad really is dystopian in a world where it's getting tired to call things dystopian. Mark Leyner was the right reference point.
