Bad Dreams

last night was the second time in recent months i've had a dream in which i actually wake myself up by murmuring suddenly and quite loudly because it was a bad dream - both times i've been with my girlfriend and both times i'd eaten right before going to bed...curious! in the dream i was a small boy again and an ageing Arnold Schwarzenegger was my mean guardian - he kept me in a room because apparently there was something wrong with me and i couldnt be allowed out - also i had a sister (i dont have one in real life) i think and he wouldnt let us play together so i tried to escape - i got outside and realised i was in the backyard of my house circa 1986 - Arnold followed me outside and i realised he was The Terminator so i tried to run away but found i was too sluggish and slow through fear...at this point i yelled out and woke up! WTF!

Arnold's only in it cos i was thinking briefly about the forthcoming Terminator film earlier in the day...i think the sister thing comes from the film Signs which i was also thinking about at some point...i regularly have dreams featuring people and environments from my past which may be down to regrets of some kind or just cos i like nostalgia generally...and i guess the food triggered the chemicals in my brain which make you dream bad!

so, er, had any interesting bad dreams lately?!

blueski, Friday, 25 October 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i used to get these recurring nightmares about having all my teeth crumble and fall out, apparently it's quite common but i still don't know what it means.

last night i dreamt that i swallowed a gold earring by mistake, thinking it was a pill.

minna (minna), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i've had dreams about my teeth before cos i must be pressing them together quite hard as i sleep...in the dream it feels like they're gonna break but they never do - eventually i wake up - argh!

blueski, Friday, 25 October 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night I had one of the annoying awake/asleep dreams where even when awake (or what you think is awake) the dream continues - in this case there was an unhappy ghost in my bedroom, and because of the constantly changing shadows on the walls it is very, very easy to see shapes and movement.

I was awake maybe 90 minutes trying to get over it, but every lapse back into sleep led to further haunting. Groo.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i had one two nights ago about a combo rattlesnake/cobra. he got in the house and tried to bite me. my dad (?1) snapped his neck. analyze that, sigmund.

the one three nights ago was too horrific to recount here.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

For the last few weeks I've been regularly getting dreams that I've fallen in with some nasty Mafia types and then double-crossed them and that they're CHASING me across a CAR PARK!

But they don't have any guns, for some strange reason, and I always get away, so that's alright.

I think it means you have hidden fantasies about spending long nights out in the wilderness with your father, going fishing and lighting fires and making animal noises and sleeping in a tent after an evening of buggering tenderly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i had recurring nightmares about michael myers (the psycho killer not the canadian) which used to REALLY, REALLY shit me, even after i'd woken up. there was a genuine sense of evil to the dreams that renders the films more frightening to me than they rightly deserve.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 25 October 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

One dream ended th other night with someone in whatever house I was in screaming "Oh now it's HER!". I looked towards the open front door, but whoever it was standing at the foot of the front steps I. I walking closer, my eyes took a while to focus, and in fornt of me was a terrifying slightly-distorted version of Sharon off Eastenders. And that is the most terrifying thing I've ever seen.

i had a dream that went on for three seperate nights - i was struggling to get a giant squid out of a canal - fighting real hard - i had the flu so it was all a bit screwed up - i was so into the dream that i woke with my teeth gritted together - it was only about two weeks later that i realised the squid in the dream and the whole scenario was out of lord of the rings. but jesus - three nights running - the flu screws you up

About two weeks ago I just kept having these hyperactive type dreams where event would rush into event and nothing would make sense and then I'd wake up. However the minute I'd try to go back to sleep the dreams would begin from where they left off. Eventually I woke myself up and went back to sleep so many times that the line between the dreams and reality got really blurred and I was just fucking terrified, I had to get up and watch TV for an hour to get my head together. I blame drugs/alcohol.

last night i dreamt i was on a bus in one of those unspecified countries you have in dreams, and suddenly we ran into a riot and two saddam hussein lookalikes in fatigues got on the bus and took everyone hostage. i could see a burning building and dead bodies very clearly through the window. i was very scared i was going to be killed. but i also found myself thinking "hey, if these guys hold me hostage for 7 years like terry anderson, i could get them to teach me arabic!"

i had heard for the first time about the moscow hostage-taking just before i went to bed, so i attribute my dream to that.

During the summer holidays of my transfer from 3rd year to 4th (cue Don McLean - "A long, long time ago......" etc, etc) I had a reccurring nightmare that I was sat underneath the only desk in my soon-to-be form room, whilst my soon-to-be form teacher (who was a right bastard) rode his bike around me. God only knows what Fread would have thought.

lol p xx, Friday, 25 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Fread?? WTF? Freud, even. And there was only one desk 'cause he'd moved all the others into the corridoor, before anyone asks....

lol p xx, Friday, 25 October 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The last dream that I remember was not so much bad as annoying and tedious. I had come home (in the dream, home was a studio apartment with at least 5 doors to the outside) after a Saturday night's drinking. I was trying to go to sleep, but people kept somehow opening the doors, coming in, and making noise. I'd get up, discover that one of the doors was open to a party going on next door, and several people from the party were standing just inside my apartment and chatting. I shooed them back to the party, closed and locked the door, and went back to bed, only for several more incidents like that to happen. The most annoying such event was when I found 2 radio DJs broadcasting from across my room. They wouldn't let themselves be shooed out, so I started jumping on and trashing their cars (which were in the room, somehow) from frustration.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 25 October 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

babies in sewer pipes full of olive oil screaming, tentacle with blade slicing ankle, and finally drowning, cats running around on a ground paved with chalkboard, dead fetuses in dumpsters, young girl predicting my death and then giant sewing needle chasing me through alleyways eventually leaving a big hole in me.

i had another one where the boys from Hanson squirted mustard at me in Burger King so I killed them and got arrested. Then one of the cops killed the other one and then himself leaving the police car to crash into a wall. So I escaped.

Honda, Friday, 25 October 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

No, this is BAD dreams, not SEX dreams.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 25 October 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i used to have dreams about gypsy moth caterpillars at the end of every winter. they were horrible. we also once got a tin of rice that had little yellow worms in it, only we didn't realize because we didn't cook the rice for a few days and by that time they'd spread out all over the kitchen ceiling, so i had some nightmares about those too. none of those are very interesting though.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 25 October 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

BAD SEX dream? It certainly wasn't good.

Honda, Friday, 25 October 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

the proportion of any dreams I am aware of having is extremely low but I can't remember the last bad dream I had. the best candidates are maybe four (!?!) years ago almost when I was taking an analysis class and dreamed about doing math a lot. but even those were good even if I could never figure out the problems.

During my afternoon nap I dreamt that I bumped into an old friend of mine that I haven't seen (in real life) for abt 4 or 5 years, and that she had contracted some terrible crippling disease which I did my best to politely ignore. It's bummed me out for the rest of the day, actually.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 30 January 2003 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I prolly had my 1st dream 2 nites ago wit explicit ilx activity. There was a thread on ILM wher gareth l gave a long, rambling post which i didn't understand. Near the end of the post i saw the word "indieanimosity" (just one word). I was thinking, "this board has gone 2 far if that's wot wer resortin 2."

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 30 January 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Disease dreams. I dreamt recently that not only had all my teeth fallen out - along with my hair - but that also my left arm was covered in a rash of greenish-black pustules filled with a horrific brown juice, and there were cancerous moles all over my body. And it was all somehow because of TOO MUCH JUNK FOOD...

I've just started working in a medical research facility, so this dream may come true in an Outbreak stylee.

YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE EVER, FINDING ME IN BED WITH YOU

becky lucas (becky_lucas), Friday, 31 January 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night I dreamt that I was trying to stop an ugly looking Raven from stealing a baby, which proved quite difficult as I was only 10 inches high at the time.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 31 January 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I dreamt I'd been on a Grand Theft Auto style killing spree in Birmingham City centre while being goaded on by a sort of sinister benefactor guy who gave me guns and that. At some point I was cornered on New Street by a police guy who tried to talk me out of it and be all diplomatic on my ass; this was a ruse to distract me while some other policement threw a grenade into the corner I was standing in, but I noticed this and hit the grenade back at them on the half-volley, blowing them up. At this point my sinister terrorist benefactor guy performed plastic surgery on me so that I could continue my violent spree, but because the surgery consisted of grafting Marc Almond's face onto mine I opted to retire because I had very good cheekbones.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 31 January 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night, I dreamed that my three children (I have no children in reality) had been recruited by a German producer to join a fake pop confection group -- the idea was that they would look like atomic kitten and sound like the Backstreet Boys. When my youngest daughter opened her mouth and Justin Timberlake's voice came out, I knew I had to put an end to the charade -- I walked onto the stage, yelled "This is all a farce", and dragged my children off stage with me. They screamed and yelled at me for ruining their big chance, as I tried to explain that I was saving their souls. Eventually, the oldest daughter allowed me to buy her a bottle of water, but the fights continued.

My nightmares are rockist.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 31 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

My worst dream involves a foggy moor, a headless man and an old fashioned glass milk bottle. It's hideous.

The same motifs always show up in my dreams. Buildings figure prominently -- either the apartment complex I grew up in, or some big old haunted Upper West Side-ish dwelling like the Dakota, or buildings that are abandoned or neglected (I'm very interested in abandoned/neglected things in my waking life, actually). Sometimes in these dreams there'll be secret rooms that have been untouched for years, but are still as perfectly tidy as the day someone last lived there.

Also -- I have a lot of dreams about being followed, or trying to escape from something/someone.

(ps: I watched Rosemary's Baby last night and realized that that movie plays out exactly like one of my dreams)

one month passes...
I got like one hour of sleep tonight because I had one of my recurring (and quite vivid) "insect" nightmares (I wasn't even drunk, I swear!). No plot to speak of, just a close-up of a scary-looking bug crawling on my pillow right next to my face. Cut to: me waking up, heart beating rapidly.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 22 March 2003 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
I had a dream last night about a place I used to work and parted with on bad terms. I got re-hired somehow, and was on my first night waiting tables, and just couldn't do it. I don't think I ever left the kitchen - and everything was different but they hadn't trained me again, and I had to deal with my (RL) former boss.

When I worked there, I got nightmares fairly often - where I was endlessly running behind and couldn't catch up, and it was like a funhouse restaurant, always discovering new sections. That was OK, I thought the job was pretty stressful, and it was my first full-time, make-lots-of-money job.

But having nightmares about a bullshit menial waiting job, three years after you quit/get fired - WTF?

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 14 June 2004 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting so sick of having bad dreams about being back at school. It's gone beyond being unprepared for exams into the whole place being weird and done up and me having missed months, years of lessons and feeling lost and unwelcome there. I hate it. I woke up with it at 3am and never really got back to sleep again till 6.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 June 2004 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

my mid year exams start next week. despite the many years of university/school i have survived without mishap, i am still having bad dreams about oversleeping/going to the wrong exam/getting the dates confused/turning up with the wrong notes....

gem (trisk), Monday, 14 June 2004 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My bad dream last night covered almost the entirety of a full-length movie, complete with closing credits. I think maybe I was listening to helicopters circling Central Park much of the night.

I woke up from a nightmare this morning about terrorists spreading plague across the US. The most terrifying and upsetting part of my dream was walking out of my mother's house to see the street littered with the dead bodies of her neighbors. There was, however, an amusing aspect to my dream which I failed to appreciate until after I had woken up. The animal vector that the terrorists had chosen for their bioengineered plague was a giant migratory flock of winged turtles!

one year passes...

So I woke up this morning wanted to kill every fucker in the world ever, and I still felt like this well after an hour of getting out of bed.

Just horrible dreams where all my friends hated me and were trying to avoid me. I'd wake up annoyed, fall asleep, and have the same bloody dream but in a different location.

One nice dream in the middle of all this though was the one where I befriended two squirrels, and tried to teach them all about what being a human was like - including why we have thumbs.

Ste, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 08:30 (nineteen years ago)

i had a slightly similar dream: i was in this huge hall in a strange city that i was visiting for some unknown reason, and i saw a really old friend of mine. i went to say hello, and she gave me this horrible look, like, "bitch!" and started talking to someone else. i think this may have stemmed from my guilt over the fact that her daughter just turned a year old, and i still haven't met her. i've been promising to go stay with them for about 2 years.

then i had a dream that my ex's crazy brother-in-law was chasing me.

i woke up feeling rather unhappy.

i find that my choice of sleeping position deeply affects the (un)pleasantness of my dreams, so i guess you could try adopting a new one if you're desperate for change. my favorite is the "soldier".

I had the freakiest dream (the last nite I was in Tokyo): I was walking with dad near the sea and kept asking when she sea would end. It suddenly turned from sand into brick (looking like sand). Very freaky.

six months pass...

nightmares last night, and involving my all time favourite thing - zombies!

So it started off as a bit of a game, one half of the planet were going to 'pretend' to be zombies and the rest of us were going to run and hide. But it turned out that the zombies were real.

About 20 of us lay hidden barricaded in one house, we had to keep quiet because even if just one zombie had heard us in there we'd have the whole hord ripping the place apart. I remember one horrible moment while we were all stood there still as ice when a zombie face appeared at the window looking in.

Things went horrible when a couple of guys with us noticed that they'd actually gotten some scratches, and started to feel ill. uh!

The other zombie dream last night was more pleasant, although still messed my head. Me and a sole surviving friend had taken refuge in an old Victorian mansion, it had been turned into apartments and hotel rooms. Then all of a sudden hundreds of people returned home there and started asking us why we'd broken half their furniture and garden fences.

one year passes...

I've had school/university dreams for the last 2-3 years after moving away from Michigan in 2004.

Problem is that moving back to Ann Arbor is a nightmare for me, and school dreams always mean 'michigan + university', so it's double stress nightmare whammy.

I think it's to the point where I have school stress dreams at least 3-4x a week.

kingfish, Friday, 3 April 2009 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

uh school stress dreams are the worst, i get them sometimes. it usually involves me not having done my homework.

for the past few weeks i've been having a recurring dream, but it's impossible to describe. i only ever remember a section of road from the dream, it's always the same section.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Friday, 3 April 2009 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

I had the worst dream I have ever had, and I need to talk about it somewhere. I didn't even want to tell my wife the details. My 18-month-old daugher, K, went to the hospital and it turned out she had some kind of "aneurysm" that was terminal. But to make things worse, the hospital's procedure was to have terminally ill children shot with rifles. They asked me to do it and I wouldn't, so my wife did it. I remember that the rifle looked sort of fake and skeletal, like something for a game. The dream continued for a long time after my daughter died, and I was completely devastated.

Toward the end of the dream, I was trying to figure out whether I should go back to my work, and it occurred to me that I had an old job offer from some larger company, and for some reason this whole series of events meant in the dream that I should think about taking the offer, but I don't know what the connection was supposed to be.

Interpretations?
