Prompted by crucial pub debate "Guns don't kill people? Well what about Gunnar from Rogue Trooper then?"

very wise.

Helm always seemed the most rubbish of the three. I mean, a talking helmet, what's the point of that? still, there were those stories were he was revealed to have creepy mind control powers when people other than Rogue put him on.

Those were awful though, a feeble attempt to make Helm interesting cos they couldn't write him interesting.

The stupidest bio-chips story was that origin one where it was revealed that they'd all been called Helm, Gunnar and Bagman before they ended up in the helm, gun and backpack, a turn of events which in retrospect suddenly looked somewhat too convenient.

A vintage 2000AD strip, Jel. Post-holocause war story, with these three AI pieces of equipment. I always found it a rather dull strip, myself.

B-but the GI's were blue. As has been noted before (by me) this always = K-classic.
Wasn't there also a desparate attempt to make Helm interesting by having him take the blast of a grenade?
Anyway Gunnar is obvious the best, I mean -a bag? a helmet? C'mon.

Rogue Trooper's writing was rather lame, but it did have some great art - classic Dave Gibbons, Cam Kennedy, that guy who did Rael (Colin Wilson?), Ewins/McCarthy (?).

Colin Wilson was the best, with his dirty cyberpunk look.

The writing was shite though... the Norts all had hero guns (guns unable to shoot heroes), and while it went for a "War-Is-Hell" schtick, any of the characters in it who had opted out of the war were portrayed as irredeemably bad.

It had its moments, though. the fortress where all the defenders had gone mad and thought they were in the Napoleonic Wars was a particular favourite.

The story where Bagman's biochip was damaged and he went mad was a larf.

The original version rogue saved three other friends from the genetic infantryman they were called Colostomy Bagman, Lightor and Canteen. When they died, ROgue put their chips into his cybernetic cig lighter, his robotic water canteen and his colostomy bag. The ensuing adventures all revolved around Rogue being saved by the autonomous actions of his pals as they were able to fend off the Nort hordes and traitorous nurses by pouring water on them, lighting cigars and removing faeces from Rogue's colon. They rewrote it all two weeks before it went to press. Shame
