I made a mix tape for my crush...

...should I actually give it to him? a) He and I are both terribly shy, and I thought this would be the best way to tell him I like him without a possibly disastrous in-person confession. b) Because of work/school schedules I don't really see this person around much anymore, so if it turns out he doesn't like me we can easily avoid each other. Now the important part, it's not a "songs I think you'd like" tape (we both do radio shows and it seems a tape like that wouldn't be obvious enough) but an actual "I really like/love you [but if you don't feel the same it's okay, I just thought you should know]" tape. There are songs by bands I know he likes, but I was really concentrating on the lyrics and the track order to convey the message. Basically I've been listening to it and thinking "this is perfect!" but now I'm getting second thoughts about the whole notion. Is this idea too damn gushy? Please advise.

Need a tracklist to comment properly, but it sounds like a nice idea.

no outthere bros. = no love.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

DO IT! you have nothing to lose but a modicum of respect [which passes and frankly is overrated anyway]!

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

crikey! this tape would definitely work on me. if you took Jess' advice, i'd go nowhere near you.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

your answer lies in jim's post.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

a rare thing.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

however, if you want riproarin bare backed buttsex, the answer lies in my post.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

go for it, what a great idea! good luck, i hope it has the desired effect :-)

donna (donna), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT!

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 28 October 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

You can't go this far and not go further...

JM, Monday, 28 October 2002 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Galaxie 500's Instrumental is my idea of (and i quote) "riproarin bare backed buttsex" music.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 October 2002 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

if a woman gave me a tape full of death metal I'd be halfway there. DO IT!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 28 October 2002 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

nice track list!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 October 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim, that comment made me go and download the song, and I must say I have NO IDEA what the hell you're talking about.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 28 October 2002 06:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That says a lot about my sex life.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 October 2002 07:31 (twenty-three years ago)

it needs some slayer or megadeth, but best of luck anyhow!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 28 October 2002 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, 'cause nothing says lovin' like Slayer and Megadeth!

Kim (Kim), Monday, 28 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Does it sound mean to say I think the message a bit err.. heavily spelled out. It's like a crush tape parody. But that may be a good thing, if he's so shy.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Even with it heavily spelled out he's probably still going to wonder if he's reading the message right. Maybe hint that you'd be interested in a compilation tape from him if he has time.

toraneko (toraneko), Monday, 28 October 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Your tape seems a bit creepy. Just walk over and give him a kiss, and see how he responds.

Graham (graham), Monday, 28 October 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

If that works, flash him with your cho-cha.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 October 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

haha if graham calls something creepy you know yr in trouble.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, it'd be like if jess called someone insensitive.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

(ps. i agree with dang the mang)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should ask him out first and give him the tape as a present if the first date goes well.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

But Tom, cho-cha flashing = U+K!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck off mark, you insensetive cunt.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean there are other ways of asking a guy out, Dan??

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

what us shy boys need is a kick in the shins (shout "I like you, goddammit" as you do so) and then a mix tape!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

why don't you just dunk his pigtails in the inkwell why you're at it?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

(what I mean is, it'd be great to just be told! don't actually kick him :)(and as I said, best wishes)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

surely the cho-cha must be shaved, or not?

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Monday, 28 October 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the second date.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 October 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

U+K Question: Are you planning to write the tracklist on the sleeve, or just let him listen until he gets it?

(Random suggestion: Write down the tracklisting but leave the tape blank)

Graham (graham), Monday, 28 October 2002 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Random suggestion #2:

Kidnap him, tie him up and force him to listen to it on repeat until he falls in love with you (this will work).

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 October 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom is wise. Messages of love (and there isn't much code here) before even asking him out are a little heavy.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 October 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the message a bit err.. heavily spelled out

I thought I'd better make it *really* obvious, because I've received a more subtle crush-type-tape before and I didn't have a clue.

Messages of love (and there isn't much code here) before even asking him out are a little heavy

I'm 90% sure he likes me. I haven't actually seen him since classes started - it's hard enough finding the guy to give him the tape, never mind getting to talk to him long enough to say more than hi how's it going bye. Thus the Overly Dramatized Action on my part, I want my intention to be very clear so he can decide what to do next without worrying what I'm going to think.

U+K Question: Are you planning to write the tracklist on the sleeve, or just let him listen until he gets it?

Ah, I agonized over this for a while. I wrote it on the inside folded part of the sleeve (so it is hidden unless you actually take it out and unfold it).

Poppy (poppy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I a mentalist to feel bad that nobody has ever made me a mix tape? I'm not just talking about crush-related mix tapes, I mean any mix tapes. I suspect this a pathetic and indie thing to worry over.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, you could try just spontaneously giving a mix to some of your friends- they might reciprocate. I'm making a mix for boy & have just spent 40 some minutes obsessing over which Pet Sounds song to include... I'm pathetic.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh Ooh either "I know there's an answer" or "I just wasn't made for these times"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It depends, obv., but why not 'Don't Talk (put your head on my shoulder)'?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

aww nicole i'll make you a mixtape, you only have to ask! ;-)

let me know your aesthetic parameters!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for offering Marcello!

I post to ilx so obv. I have no aesthetic parameters.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
update: Seeing as how I never see the chap in question around anymore, I got a mutual friend to pass the tape along (a month ago). Today he was at a meeting that we all had to attend, so we pretended not to notice each other for the whole two hours.

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 29 November 2002 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Must have been the Galaxie 500...butt sex just wasn't his thing.

B, Friday, 29 November 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, looking back I can see where I went wrong. I wasted my 60 minutes, when "Sister Ray" would have fit on there almost four times!

Poppy (poppy), Friday, 29 November 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

at least he's got a great tape to listen... and it will always remind him of you.
