nobody seems to know shit
The raid began early Monday morning and law enforcement personnel appeared to be focused on the area of the club where Trump's offices and personal quarters are, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The Justice Department declined to comment, as did the White House. A White House official said it was not notified about the raid.

― maf you one two (maffew12), Monday, 8 August 2022 23:42 (one year ago) link
There is some reporting that it was related to classified documents taken from the White House. I could have sworn we went through this already, but maybe it's just the wheels of justice moving slowly and finally catching up to what was reported months ago.

1/3Per sources: search warrant at Mar-a-Lago was related to retention of classified docs. FBI showed up at 9am and left at 6:30pm. They were in plain clothes -- so club staff likely thought they were secret service. That is why it didn't leak earlier.— Brian Entin (@BrianEntin) August 9, 2022

There was communication between the FBI and US Secret Service before the search warrant was executed Monday, a person familiar with the matter said, allowing for the FBI to access the estate without any complications. There is only a small Secret Service footprint at Mar-a-Lago when Trump is not there....The National Archives, charged with collecting and sorting presidential material, has previously said at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort – including some that were classified. In early June, a handful of investigators made a rare visit to the property seeking more information about potentially classified material from Trump’s time in the White House that had been taken to Florida....The source said some of the documents shown to investigators had top secret markings.Five days later, on June 8, Trump’s attorneys received a letter from investigators asking them to further secure the room where the documents were stored. Aides subsequently added a padlock to the room....“It is a federal crime to remove classified documents wrongly. And so if you are filling out that affidavit and you have to list the crime, you can list that as the crime,” said Elie Honig, a former federal and state prosecutor and a CNN senior legal analyst.Honig told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront” that the timing of the search held with the longstanding department rule not to execute politically sensitive moves within 90 days of an election.“Today is just about 90 days out exactly from the midterms, I think maybe 91 or 92 days out. That policy, that may be a reason why they did it today because they want to stay clear of that if they’re interpreting that as a 90 day rule,” he said.

The only reason they would have to open the safe would be if someone told them what was likely in the safe, no?
I like the detail that it wasn't, like, some vault, it was just some shitty standard hotel safe.

I am curious why this Asshole who had no attachment to the office or job or White House or really much at all would take 15 boxes of *anything* with him, let alone 15 boxes of documents. He seems like the type of Asshole that would just leave all his shit behind. Also, 15 boxes is a lot. There is no way this dickhead knows what is in those boxes, right? He probably just told some underling to dump everything from the Oval Office into some boxes and ship it down to Florida, like someone who stays in hotels and compulsively takes home all the free pens, paper, soaps, shampoos, anything that's not nailed down.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 12:41 (one year ago) link
he's probably selling information to other countries
― a (waterface), Tuesday, 9 August 2022 12:51 (one year ago) link
That's what I was thinking it was about, not stealing incriminating documents to protect himself, we already know he flushes those down the toilet, but stealing top secret documents to sell or blackmail, that sounds like something he wouldn't be able to resist on his way out of the white house.
― BrianB, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 13:10 (one year ago) link
We’ve gotten so used to the cartoon villainy of Trump and his people—but it is refreshing to see the FBI treating him with no deference.
― F'kin Magnetometers, how do they work? (President Keyes), Tuesday, 9 August 2022 13:15 (one year ago) link
One of Asshole's supporters tweeted some ridiculous defense about Asshole declassifying a bunch of shit and taking it with him because the American people deserve to know all these secrets, or some such shit. Which would imply intent to distribute or make public, if it weren't such obvious bullshit.

/22 This is a good suggestion by Andrew Weissmann. There’s reporting that a DoJ team recently visited Mar-a-Lago and talked to people including Trump himself about the documents. If he lied, that would be a classic FBI trap. Still seems light to justify that search. https://t.co/ppVVvIr5RD— DarkTimesHat (@Popehat) August 9, 2022

Thomas Schwartz, a professor at Vanderbilt University who studies and writes about the presidency, said Nixon wasn’t allowed to take tapes or other materials from the White House when he resigned in 1974.
Many of Nixon's papers remained in Washington for years before being transferred to his presidential library in California, Schwartz said.
“This is different and it is a sign of how unique the Trump period was... how his behaviour was so unusual," Schwartz told the Associated Press news agency.
So Nixon wasn't 'allowed,' and Trump was allowed to remove stuff.. who is on site to make this call? Is there was non-partisan White House overseer?
― Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 9 August 2022 16:50 (one year ago) link
