Another month in hell

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 1 July 2017 18:08 (six years ago) link

A wonderful summary by John Cole ("previously, on...")

But the important thing to remember in all of this is that while all this is going on, Republican operatives are using the chaos to fulfill life long goals.

The Kris Kobach/Hans von Sapovsky voter purge, the destruction of medicaid, destroying longstanding alliances and trade agreements, immigrations “reforms,” stacking the courts, gutting the EPA and actively using the government to attack CLimate Science, etc. It’s nearly impossible to keep track of all the evil shit that is going on, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Trump doesn’t know of 99% of the shit that is happening.

“At some point in the future, we’re going to look back and say how did we do it without space?”

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 1 July 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

“Infinity and beyond!” Aldrin said.

Everyone laughed.

Then Trump added some lines of his own.

“This is infinity here,” he said. “It could be infinity. We don’t really don’t know. But it could be. It has to be something — but it could be infinity, right?”

Fetchboy, Saturday, 1 July 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

I mean had Buzz Aldrin been a little later you wouldn’t have had the Deep Impact. He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart. He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the meteors, he said, "There’s no reason for this." People don’t realize, you know, infinity, if you think about it, how much is that? People don’t ask that question, but how much is infinity? Why could that one not have been worked out?

﴿→ ☺ (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 1 July 2017 20:37 (six years ago) link

Trump should allocate billions toward the discovery of infinity. I mean, you never know, right? It could be right there. Maybe it's even been there all along!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 1 July 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

I support the President ordering his entire Cabinet to drop everything they're doing and begin counting to infinity, no matter how long it takes. Maybe it could be suggested to him that this was precisely the kind of decisive action that Failing Obama was too chicken to take.

Remarks by the President Signing an Executive Order on the National Space Council

So, I just want to tell you that we are now going to sign an executive order, and this is going to launch a whole new chapter for our great country. And people are very excited about it and I can tell you, I’m very excited about it. Thank you all very much. (Applause.)

(The order is signed.)

COLONEL ALDRIN: Infinity and beyond. (Laughter.)

THE PRESIDENT: This is infinity here. It could be infinity. We don’t really don’t know. But it could be. It has to be something -- but it could be infinity, right?

I still can't believe Donald Trump is the President of the United States.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 1 July 2017 22:58 (six years ago) link

Is he planning to start a war with North Korea as the ultimate diversion tactic?

Treeship, Sunday, 2 July 2017 03:52 (six years ago) link

Starting a war would build loyalty/goodwill among jingoistic idiots, redouble the divide between "patriots" and "globalist cucks," and give Trump some serious conflict to sink his teeth into as a distraction from the unbearable emptiness of his being.

Win. Win. Win.

Treeship, Sunday, 2 July 2017 03:54 (six years ago) link

The "strategic patience is over" line really bothered me. It's probably just more bullshit but still terrifying.

HAPPY SATURDAY NIGHT THO

Karl Malone, Sunday, 2 July 2017 04:02 (six years ago) link

NK regime understands particularly well that having the serious ability to fight back is their best guarantee of survival, no matter what bluster Trump can dish out. War would mean hundreds of thousands dead in the first couple of weeks. They're even strategically hardened against nukes and could inflict plenty of damage even after a nuclear strike. If Trump gets all upset at the sight of a few Syrian kids getting bombed, he ought to break down into a weepy puddle on the floor at the thought of the masses of Korean kids he'd personally kill, maim and traumatize by starting a shooting war in Korea.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 2 July 2017 04:05 (six years ago) link

oh that's different

j., Sunday, 2 July 2017 04:06 (six years ago) link

He doesn't care about Syrian kids. He only cares about getting attention by being the biggest asshole possible. Who knows what kind of reasoning will go into his military decision making.

Treeship, Sunday, 2 July 2017 04:20 (six years ago) link

If he provokes Kim Jong Un to commit atrocities he will probably say that proves he was right to attack and say the crooked fake media thought Kim was just fine.

Treeship, Sunday, 2 July 2017 04:21 (six years ago) link

I mean, who knows. Hopefully no one tries to talk him into some major conflict. There are plenty possible ones he could pick -- NK is just an example based on his recent statement.

Treeship, Sunday, 2 July 2017 04:23 (six years ago) link

We've already collectively othered the people and leaders of North Korea (see ILX thread "North Korea people getting fucked over for life is hilarious!" or whatever - although i will grant that the kim jong family is just fucking ridiculous and it is sort of funny), so I don't envision many people crying about the dead, let alone trump. beyond perhaps the diehard iraq war protesters, no one really gave a shit about all the civilians who died there. when people talk about what a terrible mistake that was, they're generally referring to the geopolitical consequences. GWB is a colossal piece of shit but he's probably spent more time thinking about the people that died as a result of his decisions than just about anyone else. although who knows, maybe everyone is constantly thinking about the people who were slaughtered but don't want to say anything because it never feels like a good time to bring it up. in my experience whenever that topic comes up people are just like "yeah...man that was fucked up *stare blankly for 2 seconds* i like hot dogs" or whatever and then it's over. anyway, my point is that no one cared about the dead civilians in iraq, and we've already been trained from birth to think that everything in NK is a joke and they have it coming. and that's like, for a normal USA person. trump is something else. i get tired of everyone psychologizing him but er yeah i don't think he cares about anyone else in the universe so i sure as hell don't think he really cares about who is going to die whenever he tells "the generals" to do something, or more accurately, whenever he allows "the generals" to do whatever they've been wanting to do for a long time

There was a Spy piece some years ago in which the author managed to get several people in Congress to comment forcefully on the civil war in Freedonia or some such.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 August 2017 11:45 (six years ago) link

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12— What should the United States do to stop what's going on in Freedonia?

Asked that question, a number of House freshmen, clearly not fans of the Marx Brothers, offered answers that included "take action" and "it's a different situation than the Middle East."

Not one got the joke.

The joker was Spy magazine, whose staff revived the sovereign but fictitious nation of Freedonia from "Duck Soup," the 1933 Marx Brothers movie.

Posing as the host of a New York radio talk show, Spy's staff called about 20 first-term House members and, after a series of innocuous questions, asked, "Do you approve of what we're doing to stop what's going on in Freedonia?" or "Do you approve of what we're doing to stop ethnic cleansing in Freedonia?"

The responses, apparently based on the assumption that the questioner was asking about Bosnia, came readily.

Representative Corrine Brown, Democrat of Florida, said she approved of what the United States was doing in Freedonia, and added, "I think all of those situations are very, very sad, and I just think we need to take action to assist the people."

Representative Jay Inslee, Democrat of Washington, was candid. "I have to be honest with you, I'm not familiar with that proposal," he said. "But it's coming to the point now that a blind eye to it for the next 10 years is not the answer."

Representatative Steve Buyer, Republican of Indiana, said, "Yeah, it's a different situation than the Middle East."

Spy's national editor, Jamie Malanowski, characterized the responses as "completely understandable."

"In campaigning," he said of the lawmakers, "they are asked a lot of dumb questions, and they are all used to supplying answers."

Anyway. Has Trump taken credit for the Olympics in LA yet?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 August 2017 11:47 (six years ago) link

it would be rad if we could have a nomination process that didn't involve poisoning the well three years in advance for people who haven't even declared their intentions. If she decides to run, I'm perfectly happy to weigh the merits of Kamala Harris against other candidates who have also decided to run, and then select the person I like best in the primary and hope they win the nomination, but then no matter who actually wins the nomination I will almost definitely vote for the Democrat because I don't want four more fucking years of Trump or Pence or Ivanka or Ben Sasse or whoever the fuck those assholes end up settling on. but no, let's go ahead and draw our lines in the sand now so we can make good and certain that whoever gets the nod for the Dems in 2020, turnout will be sufficiently depressed that we can get a full eight years of this good stuff we've been getting for the past six months.

^^^^^ dude is so clueless about "optics", it's incredible. even more incredible is that how he has reacted to Russia stuff hasn't made 100% of people go "uh ok guess there's a There there after all". Like you couldn't try to look more guilty than he has.
