First wave of Toronto lineup:

I'd forgotten that someone made a Moe Berg movie (Catcher Was a Spy).

And Annette Bening playing Gloria Grahame!

nice to see Melanie Laurent is still directing, her first feature (?) a couple years back was actually pretty interesting

Untitled Bryan Cranston/Kevin Hart Film

threw up a little when I clicked through to see what this was

NYFF will have a centennial Mitchum retro of 24 films

https://www.filmlinc.org/nyff2017/daily/robert-mitchum-retrospective-set-for-nyff55/

And they open w/ Linklater, Haynes centerpiece, close with Woody Allen's Wonder Wheel (Winslet, Timberlake)

Caught the Ostlund (pretty good!) and the Lanthimos (pretty meh!) at press screenings this week

so TIFF begins today...

Got 5 NYFF tix, probably more later. Off the Main Slate just Call Me by Your Name and one of the two Hongs. Two Mitchum oldies and Pandora's Box w/ orchestra.

I wanted to see CMBYN but it's only playing on TIFF's opening night, which should be avoided at all costs

I have tix for

Caniba
First Reformed
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts
The Third Murder
The Day After
Death of Stalin
I Love You, Daddy
Florida Project
Zama
Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches

Really wish Death of Stalin was playing NY.

Erstwhile ilxor KJB very amped for Zama.

Someone I trust very much speaks highly of the Schrader.

Zama was very good. Caniba has ensured that no screen violence will shock me for at least a decade.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 12 September 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

Of what I saw, I'd rank em

Zama
First Reformed
The Square
The Death of Stalin
The Florida Project
I Love You, Daddy
The Day After
Killing of a Sacred Deer
Caniba
Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches

I need to be convinced of the pivot the Schrader movie takes in its second half but I can't deny the power of its best moments

The Square has gotten its share of grumpy dissents

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 September 2017 14:44 (six years ago) link

Not surprising. It pretty seriously loses steam near the end (just as Force Majeure did) but I liked it a fair amount. The AK-47 to FM's pistol.

(I liked everything on that list above Sacred Deer)

the Kurosawa sounds dope

I'm glad my admiration for Zama is not un-echoed

Hong Sang-soo showed up in NY! Watching him being interviewed is like spectating at the dentist's office.

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 June 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

i think "festival" always implies it is not closed!

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 June 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

yeah anyone with the scratch can buy tickets, but try to get in on ticket packages when they first go on sale cause individual ticket prices are nuts
