Taking Sides: Paganism or Christianity

I've been reading the John Julius Norwich Byzantium book, and am thinking that Julian the Apostate is a dude.

So would it be a good idea if we got rid of the effete Christian Church and replaced it with the worship of the Ancient Gods?

Frankly, yes. It makes more sense in this day and age. Though maybe invent some factory or call centre gods to bring it more up to date.

But what if you don't believe in the sun?

Triple J have been getting nude at 8pm - and asking everyone else to as well - to make it rain in Aus.

that's an interesting one, Toraneko. But what if people who are better off clothed start offending the Gods by exposing their unsightly bodies, eh? there'll be no rain for years then.

Does anyone remember the 2000AD story where Abelard Snazz brought back the ancient Gods by updating what they were Gods of? So Mercury became the God of ATMs, and Apollo the God of disco dancing. Winner.

We particularly need a god of disco dancing, I think. How cool would he/she look?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe Leroy from Fame is actually the God of Disco Dancing. He was a pretty good dancer, I seem to remember.

The problem with bringing back the ancient Gods is that it would be great if it was like Jack Kirby's Thor but apalling if it was like Sandman which we must face it is more likely.

Hey DV, I haven't taken my clothes off precisely due to the unsightly factor. I want it to rain!

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

My idea of the god of disco dancing would be the guy in Boney M circa Rasputin ("Russia's greatest love machine" - reminder for anyone with history exams coming up).

thinking a bit more about it... the stoicism and austere intellectualism of paganism is very appealing, but the endless animal sacrifices sound a bit tiresome.
