Should they?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

yay! I've never liked him.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 10:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Nor I.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Still, an axe seems a bit harsh. Why don't they just give him is P45 and send him off with flea in his ear.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

This will only be considered a valid and formal termination of employment in my eyes if he is axed by a small child wearing a slice-of-pizza Hallowe'en costume.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

What's he supposed to have done?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

why is there the threat?

but yeah sack him anyway.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The tabloid press has gone after AD for his philanderin' ways but I don't think he should lose his job as at least there is no doubt the nookie he was having was at least CONSENSUAL.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Snorting coke off 'ho's' tits? Not that this is generally seen as an obstacle to fame and fortune, but as he presents a delightfully satirical TV programme that prides itself on pricking the sleaze bubbles of politicians, it might be seen to be, umm, rather hypocritical if they continue to employ Deayton. Personally I don't give a toss. I'm glad to see the smug get unable to retaliate to people like Christine Hamilton, but this will change as the novelty wears off.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe this is the answer to the Plinky riddle.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Liz: well, exactly. What makes that programme so much fun for me is watching glass-house residents chucking rocks everywhere.

I still think that what consenting adults get up to in private is up to them. Prostitution isn't illegal in the UK but soliciting trade is.

Also, any tabloid or newspaper which tries to pitch itself as horrified about EVIL COCAINE is wilfully ignoring the provable FACT that many reporters at the showbiz end got their contacts and ammo dealing powders and pills to the stars or their colleagues. Let's just say there's one person I could name who would have absolutely no libel case against me if I did (eyewitness account by more than just me, etc.).

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, ooh, friend working today in Private Eye office, rang up to discuss the annual blag for Turner Prize launch, and she says phones ringing off hook there, can't tell me what's happening until end of the day...

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

N. It is soooo not Angus Deaton, that's even worse than the "is it Tim from Big Bro" comment!!!

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

is it david shayler?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

is it ricky gervaise?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

is it a tennis player?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

it isn't boris becker. is it cliff richard?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to remember you said he was ginger, therefore he is Chris Evans and you are billie.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Gee, thanks...

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

is it michael bessigano?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

STERN MOTHERFUCKING JOHN, HATAZ!!!!!!!

ahem

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Billie surely beats Momus in the ILX celebrity top trumps. And Mick Farren.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

before last week i'd have said no, but now i think
they should because of last week's HIGNFY show.
it was awful, he was in pieces
- all over the place in fact,
and it looked amateurish and tatty. and normal he's
cool, calm and collected, a proper anchorman for the show,
to allow the others to be funny.
it looked all wrong on friday.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

It actually looked as if Hislop and Merton had it in for him. They nornally just enjoy a running joke of knocking him: but Friday's show had real spite in it. I wonder if they played a part in the sacking?

jon (jon), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Christine Hamilton was also pretty vulgar with the BBC comments...the whole studio went speechless when she said 'BBC' stood for 'Buggers Broadcasting Communism'. I think she was more responsible for the atmos than anyone.

Jon, I do believe AD is one of the directors of either Hat Trick or TalkBack, so an outright sack orchestrated by Merton and Hislop would be difficult.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

there was real anger from IH, he looked furious.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah but as the BBC buy the show off of Hat Trick, Hat Trick refusing to replace Deaton could mean the BBC cancelling the order = Merton & Hislop out of nice high profile job. Possible spite coming from Hat Trick refusing to boot him before for similar reasons.

Wasn't Christine Hamilton on before the latest round of Deaton fuckups?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but may well have known something about what the papers might say.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, like I said, I've got a spy in the Eye. IH looked cross with that Hamilton woman more so than Deayton.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Have I got news for you" has been on far too long anyway.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

well, thats certainly true

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind him, don't love him either but so what if he's smug, he's better at reading scripted jokes than that twat from Never Mind The Buzzcocks, or pretty much anyone else.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

which twat from never mind the buzzcocks? you'll have to narrow it down

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant Mark Lamarr but I wasn't sure of the spelling of his name. Obv. the others all deserve slating too.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Nooooooo! Don't knock Bill Bailey, it's like pissing on kittens.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying really hard to imagine Bill Bailey as a kitten. Although he is v. v. funny.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

It's easier to imagine him as a lion. Buzzcocks has run its course and really should be dropped. Bill Bailey's talents are wasted on the show.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

NMTB is not great (though BB instead of SH is a MI) but it is much better than the horribly smug and tired HIGNFY.

Both are better than TTIAO tho, obv.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything is better than TTIAO. A bloke here at work said the other day that it was his favourite show on TV and that whatshisname was a comic genius. I nearly resigned.

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You really should have at least escalated the issue, Sam.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i was gallantly keeping up there, N. but YLMWTOTSOI...

zebedee (Jeff W), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I lost you with the second one in? I thought the MI was the only tricky bit ('major improvement')

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

...with two of those sets of initials, TTIAO being the other one.

zebedee, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Plinky - it's not J*hn L*sl*e is it?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

TTIAO = They Think It's All Over.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Sacked.

I think my Eye spy knew very early in the day...

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Merton will stand in as host till they find a replacement - the shows run lasts till the end of December. Hey ho.

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm happy with News continuing - anything that puts Paul Merton on our screens is good with me. Angus was fine as host - and his rejoinder to Christina Hamilton is apposite: "At least I haven't been banging on about family values for the last ten years". Do we imagine that taking advantage of the sex and drug opportunities is a rare thing for celebs to do?

Last time he was under threat there was talk of Stephen Fry taking the host job. He would be a good replacement.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Merton surely wouldn't work as a host, would he? It will be a very different show, I can't see him doing autocue or scripted gags.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"I can't see him doing autocue or scripted gags"

Well he does that on Room 101, but I don't think he's very good on that, far to stilted. And his 'persona' on HIGNFY is different - going off on surreal tangets, etc - which won't work/will have to change when he sits in the host seat.

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

It may be worth watching now! And, I don't want anymore questions about current affairs or politics.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy - it's Johnny Vaughan, innit? If I remember correctly he went down for dealing coke a few years back.

Paul Merton as host = Colossal dud of DUDDEST proportions. What they need is a proper aloof and businesslike host who won't get dragged into the rest of the insult slinging. PETER SNOW FOR HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU!

And whilst I can't quite work out why Angus Deayton got sacked when Jamie Theakston hasn't been much better and is still let on KIDS TV, I was hoping for one or two more shows where Ian and Paul *really* make him squirm. From what I saw last weekend, they must really hate him.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

hopefully this will be the end of the show.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems kinda popular though, especially as the BBC gets away with showing Have I Got Old News For You.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt, it's not JV. It's a minging little showbiz hack on one of the tabloids who used to write for style mags, wasn't a great writer or anything, and the whole time he was doing this dealing thing was living with Mummy in the arse-end of North London.

I'm not a big fan of Class A drugs as it goes, but I'm less of a fan of hypocrites scoring points in showbiz world through drug allegations.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The episode with Boris Johnson recently = classic. Though I'm sure if I'd seen any other episode in the last year I wouldn't be so fond.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, the boris johnson was funny. aslo the one with brian sewell.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
What's the latest on a Deayton replacement? I heard that Anne Robinson was hosting one edition of the show, but it would be disastrous if she took over full-time.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

> I heard that Anne Robinson was hosting one edition

that was last week and was the funniest it's been for a while (if only for Merton shouting 'Bank!' every 10 minutes). Sandi Toksvig has also been mentioned as a host which appeals to me. i think they ought to have different hosts every week for the rest of this series and just decide based on that and their availability. or knock it on the head.

who presents the radio version?

koogs, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

If it isn't there is no justice in the world.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I went to watch an episode of HIGNFY and will self was one of the guests. At the drinks afterwards he was being such an annoying, up himself t**t, surrounding himself with up themselves t**ts who were looking up at him in quiet awe. It was quite disgusting.

You might have gathered by now that I don't like the man.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

This is one of the reasons why he'd be ideal to replace deayton. He is also the worlds most sardonic man.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely Stephen Fry's the ideal replacement?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

stern john?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

CLIVE ANDERSON

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

EURGH! Is there some kind of conspiracy to get shoddy neckless improv-associated people to chair quiz shows? What with Anderson and Toksvig and...um.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Stephen fry is too affable, Clive anderson too bumbling (and Improv), Toksvig could drag down Quote unquote by her presence (and that is saying something).

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The current plan is to have different presenters each week and then possibly a phone vote at the end of the series to make money - I mean make it democratic.

The Anne Robinson episode was the second highest ratings the show has ever had. I understand the BBC are keen on Dermot Murnaghan.

Will Self is a cock though.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

HIGNFY needs and effete smug git in the middle to balance the posh psued and intelligent oaf.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

John Sargeant should have a go in the middle chair. He has the necessary dry wit and his face frightens children.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

on behalf of pseuds everywhere can i point out that hislop is (gabba gabba) NOT one of us!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete, to be in that chair, 'being a cock' is one of the requirements for the job. I guess the only thing the person has to avoid is using cock on Soho hookers.

To put some balance on things, friend was asst to WS in the mid-90s and loves him to bits (and doesn't need him, which is important in the meedja). The media is full of sycophants and hangers-on but to his credit WS isn't sycophantic at all. And Merton pisstaking WS' 50p Word Of The Week would be funny.

I'd (still) like to see Ms J Ross as a guest, she'd ream all of them.

Mark, you were at oxen-ford about the same time as a certain rockcrit and certain Woodentops lass were carrying on behind WS back, weren't you?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

effete smug git in the middle to balance the posh psued and intelligent oaf

This describes FreakyTrigger quite well

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

possibly but i wz a militantly geeky anti-scenester in those days and as a punky gesture only hung w.other mathematicians, so haf no idea

i used to know someone who wz in NA w. WS, who said he wz a very funny storyteller

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

But I trust you know of whom I am speaking?

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

well no

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Oxford is a big place Suzy and the collegiate system doesn't exactly helf an anti-scenester Mathmo hear all the gossip.

The most important role for HIGNFY chair to have is the ability to read out the scripted gags in exactly the right tone and occasionally make the most obvious barbed comment at a guest. Its not rocket science but it isn't that easy - and I would imagine Will Self would have a bit of trouble delivering other peoples gags (whilst simultaneously not writing enough of his own).

Of course for decent gender relations I'd like to see a female chair. Linda Smith is very popular with the Radio 4 set, no? Donna McPhail would be pretty good too.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's our intelligent oaf??

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Stephen Fry but he's a bit too cuddly for the job and seems to have a fear of being acerbic at all. In print and on telly, that is - for all I know he's a real bitch in person.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Tanya Headon is an oaf -- OFFICIAL

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but she doesn't post an awful lot does she. (Internet in pubs now.)

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)
