knee-jerk vote for trouble and then immediate regret i didn't vote for james

na (NA), Saturday, 9 September 2017 12:13 (six years ago) link

Excellent choice

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 12:16 (six years ago) link

I've never liked Au Revoir Simone as much as you'd think I would but A Violent Yet Flammable World was terrific. No Stars and Snake Eyes close second and third.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Saturday, 9 September 2017 12:18 (six years ago) link

I hope someone votes for James, but it won't be me. My top ones were the first Chromatics, which was a great way to release the tension of the first two episodes and welcome you back to Twin Peaks proper, the nin, which has such a dark heavy vibe that matches the most inventive and extreme episode, and Rebekah Del Rio, who provides a nice callback to Lynch's other work and has beautiful emotional range.

Moodles, Saturday, 9 September 2017 12:19 (six years ago) link

i voted for axolotl, because of the song and because of ruby

maura, Saturday, 9 September 2017 13:19 (six years ago) link

I'm torn between "Shadow," maybe the song to capture... one modality of the TP:TR mood best for me, "Snake Eyes" because it's great and exemplifies the Sacred Bones/Twin Peaks crossover I love so much, and "She's Gone Away" because it was used so goddamn well in my favorite episode. Though "No Stars" was great as well and "Audrey's Dance" is already deservedly iconic in this new iteration...

🔱 Holger Jowday ^🌑^ (Dancing on the Pylons), Saturday, 9 September 2017 13:54 (six years ago) link

I want to throw a bone out to "Axolotl" cause it was integrated so well

(Ended up voting for "Shadow" for its tone-setting)

🔱 Holger Jowday ^🌑^ (Dancing on the Pylons), Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:13 (six years ago) link

IA that it's called Wild West not Wild Wild West

sciatica, Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:14 (six years ago) link

"I'm glowing bright obsidian/axolotl amphibian" is the most hilariously undie couplet

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:16 (six years ago) link

Either Del Rio or Trouble. Probably the latter for evoking 'Pink Room'.

devvvine, Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:16 (six years ago) link

It's 'Shadows' for me, solely because it embodies the whole TP feel and geist, to near perfection imo. Looking at the list I'm surprised half of it is pretty alright; watching during the season the performances made me feel more and more weary.

I probably disliked Hudson Mo's one the most.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link

I didn't like all the artists but I loved the idea of taking time out of the 18 episodes for these performances. It was like David Lynch booking SNL.

Voted "The World Spins"

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

Toss up between that and "Shadow"

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:35 (six years ago) link

hudmo sucked. the rest of these are variously terrific

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:38 (six years ago) link

xps Yeah and all the variations on it were really cleverly done, patterns kept getting established & subverted ito the point in the episode where the cut to the roadhouse would happen, whether the announcer would be there, whether there would be an accompanying scene... there was just a great cumulative effect.

(This is partly why I think booker t and zz top should have been included, they're part of the "and now, tonight's musical guest" thread)

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 14:39 (six years ago) link

might vote vedder tbh i've really grown to love that song???

― Chris L, Saturday, September 9, 2017 9:30 AM (fifty-four minutes ago)

The languidity of the opening theme/credits ushered me into this dreamworld every week, like a hypnotic trance re-induction cue, and a roadhouse performance ushered me out. Snap! You're awake.

Cactus Blossoms, for the thrill of seeing a local (for me) band on the Twin Peaks stage

geoffreyess, Saturday, 9 September 2017 15:33 (six years ago) link

voted NIN as the killer prelude to that EP8 sequence. Twin Peaks was always industrial (the saw blades at the intro) so this made me so happy to see.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 9 September 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

"Snake Eyes", with "No Stars" a close second, and "Just You" third for the announcer giving me the chills when he introduced James.

cwkiii, Saturday, 9 September 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

I voted for Sharon Van Etten just because I really lover her and I love that song, though I don't know if it was the 'best' one of these. I actually really liked the Trouble performance, and the song fit the series; it was like getting Thought Gang back

akm, Saturday, 9 September 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

"i voted for axolotl, because of the song and because of ruby"

yeah that was a surprise, I don't care for most of the Veils stuff but that song was awesome and I liked the 'performance' of it as well.

akm, Saturday, 9 September 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

Audrey's dance. Found most of the performances underwhelming, even if by artists I like. Like the Chromatics song fit but it's one of their weakest songs in their catalog

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:00 (six years ago) link

I still can't believe Charlene Yi had one of the maybe 10 best sequences of the entire series

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

Honestly it's sad that Cruise probably won't win, due to the quick cut of her performance

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:11 (six years ago) link

That isn't why she won't win

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

yeah, shouldn't of said won't win, but less votes will definitely be cast. why then wins?

Week of Wonders (Ross), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

The Nine Inch Nails. Not my favorite song, but it was the perfect setup for the rest of 8.

flappy bird, Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

xp I don't think the (huge) impact of that song would have been greater if it had gone on for longer

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:42 (six years ago) link

But it's an old song and (rightly) not really recontextualised the way just you and Audrey's dance were, so it makes sense that people pass over it in a poll like this

streeps of range (wins), Saturday, 9 September 2017 20:46 (six years ago) link

I voted for James I'm not ashamed

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:15 (six years ago) link

hell yeah brother, was my second choice

flappy bird, Sunday, 10 September 2017 04:43 (six years ago) link

I'm leaning towards Lark right now, it really ties a nice bow around the first four episodes. Like those first four episodes are so bewildering, you get through them all and you have no idea where the show is going to go, and then that song comes on and it's so pleasant. it really captures this feeling that the plot is starting to form and the rest of the show is gonna be one long strange dreamy ride. I also like how they're stylish in a lynchian way but it doesn't feel like they're "trying" to put on an image (i.e. chromatics, who i love but of course they're in this thing)

it's amazing how a vote's been guaranteed for all but 3 performances here, and there's no way No Stars isn't getting a vote. Heck it's my second choice right now.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Sunday, 10 September 2017 05:21 (six years ago) link

well maybe not guaranteed, but there's a lot of love to go around for all of these. except hudmo. poor hudmo. I contemplated combining his performance with au revoir simone's in part 9 but then anyone who just liked the simone song wouldn't dare vote for it

well i mean it was like really short and a weird ass part of the song she barely sings

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:41 (six years ago) link

That's precisely it for me. It's a replay of maddie's murder (in that Cooper has gravely failed and is deeply confounded) but this time we don't get to luxuriate in the sadness. It's a great setup for part 18 imo

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link

Yah it totally worked, but I have no doubt in my mind it took A LOT of fiddling to make it work lol

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

yeah they didn't spend enough time on her performance. I don't know why. She blew her top when that aired on FB but then claimed it wasn't because of the shortened length. I'm still not sure what she was mad about if it wasn't that. That scene has a lot of emotional resonance in the original series; and here, it seemed superfluous. Maybe that was the intention though, like so many other semi-fan-servicey bits.

akm, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

It really increased the sadness and eventual gut punch for me.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:07 (six years ago) link

Yeah totally. I'm trying to imagine that scene in the forest fading into a 5-minute roadhouse performance and people thinking that was better than what we got

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link

it would have been 2 to three minutes better

akm, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link

Different strokes I guess. They could have had Donna and Bobby reprise their weeping, too, as a recording from the 90s played out, but it's hard to see what that would add - the way they went was purposeful and effective, and we can all still play our old CDs.

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Wednesday, 20 September 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link

I definitely would have liked it longer though not necessarily the whole song.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 23:02 (six years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 21 September 2017 00:01 (six years ago) link

wins - the band that played her backing band (was it veils) did that interview about meticulously learning the song and playing it live over and over and then it was just the a short snippet of the performance that barely featured any julie and it was the recorded track from the 90s! obvs there was something up. maybe that clouds the scene for me.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 21 September 2017 00:09 (six years ago) link

yeah Cruise went off on FB about "the cult" of Lynch. it's a bummer. reminded me of the Michael J. Anderson stuff. and Sherilyn's tweet...

Do you have a link to this? I saw cruise's SABRINA SUTHERLAND DISRESPECTED ME rant but I'm not so interested in stuff like that

I'd love a Trouble album

Brad C., Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:38 (six years ago) link

It was Chromatics who played the backing band for Cruise and in fact played live with her. I think maybe one of the issues was that they wound up using the original recording instead of what was played. Who knows why. Jonny Jewel said in a P4k interview that they practiced it over and over; and they did one take, then Lynch whispered something to her, and he didn't know what it was, and it completely changed the performance and the second one was amazing. Clearly that wasn't what was used in the end.
