the thread for NY comedy filmmakers (and others') homages to peak-period Woody Allen

reading about Louis CK's new film made me think of how many of these there are, practically a subgenre unto itself:
- When Harry Met Sally (the earliest one of these?)
- Top Five
- Frances Ha (feel like a bunch of Baumbach's fit here but this one is the most on-the-nose)
- various episodes of Girls (pick one)

extra points if it's shot in black-and-white

Trying to think if Polanski has anything

Carnage!

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 September 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

granted there's only a few laughs in that one, I wouldn't really call it a comedy

Wasn't there one....actually come to think of it I think jack Nicholson was behind the camera

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Thursday, 14 September 2017 15:49 (six years ago) link

Nicholson's only directed four films, three of which predate Allen's peak period and the last of which was The Two Jakes in 1990, so not sure what you're thinking of (Carnal Knowledge maybe?)

Heh

Carnage is most definitely a comedy/satire, tho a semi-botch of a film. Not really Allenesque though (playwright is a French woman, don't know if she's a fan).

Ed Burns is probably the worst at this, starting with The Brothers McMullen... tho I didn't subject myself to the follow-ups.

yeah I wouldn't argue too hard for it. I was trying to unravel the mysteries of darraghmac's thinking, probably a futile exercise.

xp

Louis CK just made a very blatant one?

That's mentioned in OP no

ulp

In the film, C.K. plays a successful TV producer whose 17-year-old daughter (Chloe Grace Moretz) begins a relationship with Malkovich's aged director. It spawns a kind of crisis for C.K.'s character, who has his own issues with how he treats women.

The Guardian called it "a very funny and recklessly provocative homage to Woody Allen, channeling his masterpiece 'Manhattan' and brilliantly finding a fictional way to tackle his personal reputation head-on."

Btw Οὖτις darragh is referring to the fact that Polanski raped a 13-year-old at Nicholson's house

i've been watching Mr. Show and halfway through the Nostradamus skit it goes into a full Woody Allen pastiche complete w black and white "archival" footage and title cards

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 15 September 2017 13:57 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

wow just watched "The Ten" and the whole thing feels like a pastiche of Allen's *earlier* comedic style - heavily endebted to the structure and tone of stuff like Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, Sleeper, Love and Death, his NY Stories segment. It isn't really much good but I was surprised to see Wain & co. go so hard in that direction.
