Is Schwarz-Gelb really the most likely? I thought FDP was in trouble. But I haven't really followed as much as I should have, I guess.

The CDU won the election in Germany's largest Bundesland NRW last year and the FDP is part of the governing coalition. FDP leader Christian Lindner, also from NRW, is doing great in the polls because he somehow managed to pass himself off as an innovator and the voice of a young generation (of greedy neoliberals). Also he is v v pretty.

CDU + SPD 2

SPD says no. Looks like the CDU doesn't even need a coalition partner 😥

It looks as it will be CDU/CSU+FDP+Grüne. I wonder how CSU and Grüne will agree on common refugee politics.

AfD (too) big. I'm not impressed by all the centric "well at least the extreme right in our nation are visible now/it'll make for better debates in the Bundestag". Just no.

Of course the AfD got too many votes. But compared to the FN in France 13% are not so much. On the other hand the commentary that with this election Germany has arrived in the European normality unfortunately is quite true too.

I doubt the AfD will get past their ongoing internal struggle. It's the People Who Hate People Party.

Agreed, Alex in Manhattan, but Germany is not France. To have neo-nazi's in the Bundestag is without precedent (well, ever since 1939...). And they've not done anything to deny nazi's are amongst them. It's scary.

I bumped into a local Labour councillor today, who actually physically removed a dead rat from a ginnel with their own hands. And then made the fatal mistake of asking if I have any problems ;)

After the SPD national convention this weekend, it's either another Grand Coalition, or a minority government without Merkel or Schulz.

I'm not holding my breath.

A Grand Coalition means the AfD would be leader of the opposition, with all kinds of benefits for this lovable fascist party.

The Grand Coalition talks can still fail, but considering what they had to go through to even make them happen, I have a feeling they won't.

The best thing to come out of this clusterfuck is that the two biggest political parties are now headed by women, with the party brahmins split 50/50, gender-wise. That would have been unthinkable fifteen years ago.
