Sony Pictures is in negotiations to acquire the rights to adapt “Catan,” the influential board game also known as “The Settlers of Catan,” into a film.

Gail Katz, whose credits include “Pawn Sacrifice,” “The Perfect Storm,” and “Air Force One,” will produce. Variety first reported in 2015 that she had acquired the rights.

Dan Lin, whose credits include “It” and “The Lego Movie,” and Jonathan Eirich will join the producing team. Blaise Hemingway will write the screenplay.

The studio is fast-tracking the project toward production with the goal of launching a possible franchise. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the project for Columbia.

...

The game, designed by Klaus Teuber, has sold more than 25 million copies in 38 languages and has sparked a renaissance of tabletop games worldwide, with hundreds of new games introduced every year from thousands of designers. Upon its original release in 1995, game critics in Germany honored Catan with its prestigious game of the year award.

The goal of the game is to create the dominant community on the ever-changing fictional island of Catan amid scarce resources.

I'll just leave this here

gotta admit i'm psyched about the character valiantly trying to build the longest road, if only he could just get the robber off of his brick

i remember shortly after battleship was announced, my friend and i came up with a really great pitch for a police procedural/serial-killer movie based on "guess who." cops getting new information on suspects, slamming desks, "damn! that rules him out!" "are we sure it can't be bernard?" "he's got glasses!" "shit!" then the phone rings, a creepy voice on the other line: guess who? end trailer.

this was much more material than catan offers you to work with tbh. godspeed, screenwriters.

lol

honestly, if they were willing to make a reaaaally loose adaptation of the game, it could make for a decent movie. a small set of characters forced into a survival situation together, everyone has access to something that others need, an emerging daniel plainview kind of cutthroat, hinting at a sequel as they notice seafarers on the horizon just before the credits roll

i sincerely expect some tired bullshit where at the beginning our salt-of-the-earth stone-farming hero (almost certainly played by gerard butler) thinks they're all in this together for the same goal of settling a great new land, not noticing the evil gleam in one companion's eye. years later, said companion is now a brutal dictator extracting bricks and wool from the people and it falls to one reluctant, now-aged gerard to build a road to the dark fortress and restore the trade balance.

I didn't realize there was a novel? Anyway they should clearly take inspiration from this, it's got homophobia and underage sex just like audiences love
