Israeli Gov't Dissolves?

Can someone with a knowledge of state policy explain what this means? CNN does a poor job of explaining how this alters things, other than that Sharon can no longer survive a vote of No Confidence (good). Surely they just hold new elections early next year...?

I think Sharon could cobble together a narrow government of avowed right wing lunatics, so we may not be rid of him yet.

The issue that collapsed the government is an interesting one, cutting to the heart of the current crisis: Ben-Eliezer's refusal to accept increased spending on settlements in the West Bank and Gaza in the face of swingeing budget cuts in all other areas.

Sulphuric acid bomb from an aggressive neighbour?

Ben-Eliezer's Labour Party is no longer part of Sharon's coalition, so it becomes part of the opposition. Sharon is then left with a very narrow majority, probably not enough to govern effectively (has he ever?). Interestingly:
1. the budget passed anyway, cos the ultra-nationalists voted with Sharon's Likud party
2. Ben-Eliezer AGAINST settlements?? Do me a favour. Ben-Eliezer has already begun his campaign for Prime Minister. That's what this is really all about.
Meanwhile people are still blowing themselves up and people are still getting bombed...

I wonder how right wing the new Government could be? The current one was pretty scary, but some of the parties Sharon is talking to are somewhere to the right of Haider. So things could get pretty hairy.

It is kind of fun seeing the extreme wing of Likud being jettisoned like so much garbage over the rail of the ship.

If Sharon weren't in the habit of extremely messy assassinations-by-assault-helicopter and razing whole towns with tanks and bulldozers, along with much indiscriminate killing and plentiful lies and coverups, then I might even be cheering him on at this point. Too bad he's an unregenerate scumbag and will still form the new government in his own image.
