Based on a Comic Book: Movies and Television released in 2017 - A Poll and Discussion Thread

2017 was probably the most prolific year ever for this phenomenon. There’s enough animated and live action adaptation on this list to fill an entire year’s worth of exclusive, diligent viewing... and that's even without including the slew of other 2017 films that might as well be comic book adaptations anyway (The Dark Tower, Transformers, Blade Runner 2049, Star Wars, Split, Power Rangers), a dozen other Japan only releases, a half dozen Francophone only releases, or (hey, why not) Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. Hell, I had to pull several particularly low interest, direct-to-video poll options just so it would fit the ILX poll limit of 50 options!

[For completists, those excised 2017 releases included DC Super Hero Girls: Intergalactic Games (Cartoon - Video - DC), Lego DC Super Hero Girls (Cartoon - Video - DC) and Batman VS Two Face (Cartoon - Video - DC)]

As a grown man with disposable income, OCD, and a complete set of Who’s Who and Marvel Universe floppies on a bookshelf somewhere, I’m probably the perfect target for this slew of easily consumable media but (with the exception of the first three eps of Legion) I haven’t yet seen ANY of these. There’s a number of reasons for that - lack of time and better options among them - but the main issues keeping me out are the wildly divergent levels of quality and the sheer godawful amount of the fucking things. There’s enough comic book fiction on the CW network alone to keep any (un)reasonable person busy for months.

This here’s a thread to discuss the comic adaptation pandemic, the social ramifications of super heroes as our primary fantasy type, why adults keep coming back to trope-heavy melodramatic children’s literature for escapism, how this mania is destroying or saving both movies and comics, a place to make recommendations, note standout "serious films" in the field (anybody tried Wilson or My Friend Dahmer?), warn folks away from duds, or just a safe space to point and say NERRRRRRRDS.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Sunday, 26 November 2017 05:44 (six years ago) link

There's definitely a conversation to be had about appreciating the new wave of comic adaptations solely for their camp value and Death Note and Riverdale certainly represent that school of appreciation well.

quick takes
*Atomic Blonde - very well made. Didn't like it as much as John Wick because it was less stupid but worthwhile, great action sequences, Charlize utilized well
*Blade of the Immortal - loved this. Long, crammed as much of the comic book in 2.5 hours as it could, just tons of OTT samurai violence by Miike as you'd hope for
*Ghost in the Shell live-action - not as horrible as you'd expect, visually looks amazing in parts. Racial issues involved are definitely questionable (they are elided to in the plot), but most people will probably ignore that. As an old fan I feel like they missed the point a bit but an earnest try
*Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - lot of fun, but I'll always love Kurt Russell. Not top tier Marvel but very close
*Justice League film - enjoyable commercial for upcoming Cyborg/Aquaman/Flash movies. was fine with this
*Justice League Action - only seen a handful of episodes, it's all right. Nice style, low substance
*Justice League Dark - snooze
*Legion - watched the first few episodes which were AWESOME. but i need to go back and finish it
*The Lego Batman movie - loved this. better than at least half the Batman live action films, even as a Batman parody movie. hilarious.
*Logan - as great as everybody says it is
*My Friend Dahmer - the book was better, but this was fine. good atmosphere
*Spider-Man: Homecoming - awesome, as great as everybody says it is. easy bar to clear but best Spider-Man film since Raimi's 2
*Teen Titans Go! - the dumbest most useless show ever, but since they show it on Cartoon Network 12 hours a day I have seen every damn episode 100 times over. guiltiest pleasure. camp level is 11 out of 10
*Thor Ragnarok - awesome, love Taika, go see this now. a comedy that kinda has to be a superhero movie, who cares
*Wonder Woman - again a low bar to clear but the best DC movie of late, and it's as good as the best Marvel imo. very happy with it and Gal Gadot is a dream

yes i would say this was a great year for superhero movies, kinda like last year for heartwarming animated family films

Nhex, Sunday, 26 November 2017 09:39 (six years ago) link

Write in vote for ‘The Death of Stalin’, but based on list above between ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Wonder Woman’. Both flawed but featured some of the best action/fight sequences this year.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 26 November 2017 09:50 (six years ago) link

haven't seen all of these and while I'm still a big fan of the DC tv series (supergirl and the flash at least) and liked this year's marvel movies, Logan wins this by a wide margin

akm, Sunday, 26 November 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

Wilson is awful, just like the source material.

Οὖτις, Sunday, 26 November 2017 16:43 (six years ago) link

I would've probably ditched the CW DC shows by now except that my gf (who doesn't read comics) enjoys them. They're moderately fun but pretty junky.

I watch all of the MCU stuff. The quality of the shows seems to be dipping but all three of this year's movies were great. Spider-Man might've been my surprise favorite.

Otherwise, I don't think I've seen any of the poll options that don't fall into one of those two categories.

Ripped Taylor (Old Lunch), Sunday, 26 November 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

of the movies, I only saw WW (meh) and Logan (awful)

Simon H., Sunday, 26 November 2017 16:52 (six years ago) link

I'm a big Marvel fan/collector, but I haven't seen Legion or the Gifted yet, as I only subscribe to Netflix & don't want to download series. Same problem with Preacher, which is my fave comic series of all time but I haven't managed to see anything of the series yet.
I also missed the cinema window for Logan and still need to see it on DVD.
Only just started on Punisher.

What I did see:
-Defenders: cool novelty continuation of four different series converging into one, but the storyline was unfortunately not very exciting so it wasn't much more than 'okay' in the end
-Guardians of the Galaxy 2: it's hilarious and I did enjoy it throughout, but sometimes the movie became a hit-or-miss comedy & its tendency to deliver jokes all the time went at the cost of suspension of disbelief & depth of the story.
-Iron Fist: I really enjoyed it and it honestly beats me why it's got overwhelmingly negative reviews. My fellow watchers all liked it a lot too. More happened in a single episode of Iron Fist than in half a season of Luke Cage.
-Spider-Man - Homecoming: fantastic, a truly proper movie of my favourite superhero, with an actor who's great as both Peter Parker AND Spider-Man. Great villain, too.
-Thor-Ragnarok: only negatives are that Sif isn't in there, that I'd preferred a different storyline for the Warriors Three and that they never did anything with the character of Balder the Brave. But it's a really great movie and it gets my vote!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S4 was excellent too, but I think that's not included because it started in 2016?

Valentijn, Sunday, 26 November 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

Wilson was goodish, played the character impressively straight for the first half before conceding to a narrative

Saw about half of Preacher S2 but lost the will to carry on

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was a shambles, barely any jokes, no sustained stakes, mostly a sea of CGI

Walked out of Wonder Woman an hour in, when she had done nothing but run around sidekicking to a blond dude

Love Taika Waititi but I had no idea who anyone was or what they cared about so Thor was a big waste on me, even on the largest screen in the northern hemisphere

Lego Batman was hilarious & fun

Hyped as fuck for The Death Of Stalin but it's not coming out here until like March or something?

oh my god i missed that WILSON was included on here, easily one of the worst movies i've seen this year. although nothing could top the abominable LEMON (don't see it, I was even bummed by proxy when the dude showed up briefly in the new twin Peaks)

the one funny moment in Wilson is when he goes to the friend's house and the friend asks him to donate blood or something (??) and Wilson is just like "Fuck, no."

scott seward, Monday, 27 November 2017 15:27 (six years ago) link

Of what I've seen, I really enjoyed:

The Defenders (TV ongoing - Marvel)
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Film - Marvel)
Legion (TV ongoing - Marvel) (1st half, need to see the 2nd half)
Lego Batman (Film - DC)
Powerless (TV - DC)
Runaways (TV ongoing - Marvel)
Spider Man: Homecoming (Film - Marvel)
Teen Titans Go! (TV Cartoon ongoing - DC)
The Tick (TV ongoing) (this surprised me because I HATED the pilot episode)
Thor: Ragnarok (Film - Marvel)
Wonder Woman (Film-DC)

I am very interested in Logan. The one episode of Iron Fist I saw was super boring and I had no desire to finish it. Also, honorable mention to comic book-adjecent Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which continues to be bonkers in a way I find 100% appealing.

how's runaways? that feels like one i'd be willing to try.

I haven't read the first volume of Runaways which the series is based on, so I can't really speak to how that is translating to the screen as far as comparing the show to the source material. I can say that Nico is a good bit more subdued than I expected her to be, Molly is aged up to be closer in age to the others but still fun, Chase and Karolina are about how I expected them to be, Gert is a complete rock star, and Alex is great so far but I'm not sure how they're going to finish the season given what happens in the comic books and how they've adapted it to the screen so far. One notable change is that they've given a lot more space to the parents in the television show, making them real people as opposed to one-dimensional villains, and the first three episodes are as much about their interactions and jockeying for position as they are about the kids; a couple of them are remarkably sympathetic villains (although that may change in episode 4 based on what I've seen of the trailers).

I say give the first two episodes a shot and, if you like them, watch episode 3 (my favorite so far, mostly because of how it builds upon the first two).

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Monday, 27 November 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

(I should explicitly add that my impressions of the characters given their appearances in Runaways Vol 2 and beyond is informing how I'm reacting to their televised portrayals; it's implicit in what I wrote but not necessarily obvious.)

Arrow (TV ongoing - DC) - a joyless slugfest, as I said elsewhere an episode this season had a bad guy break into the building where the internet is stored to make it explode by overclocking it. In an entirely po-faced, non-camp way.
The Defenders (TV ongoing - Marvel) - another joyless slugfest, taking the worst parts of DD, JJ and LC and the best parts of IF (because the worst is too hard to imagine) and mashing them into a confusing set of punching.
The Flash (TV ongoing - DC) - much improved this season now it's become dumb monster of the week, and should stay that way. I'm a sucker for the Flash, especially some of the crappier villains, and this series has them in spades.
The Gifted (TV ongoing - Marvel) - truly awful, feels like a reskinning of the Tomorrow People reboot from a couple of years ago only maybe worse. As trope-y as trope can be.
Gotham (TV ongoing - DC) - is teetering on the edge of falling into a bit of a rut. I was hoping the introduction of Professor Pyg was going to buck this, and it did help a lot, but playboy Bruce is just dogshit. Having said that, Grundy is a treat.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Film - Marvel) - an advert for itself at feature length. Can't remember much about it other than Ego The Living Planet, pretty sure I enjoyed it but have no desire to see it again to find out. Maybe I should.
Inhumans (TV ongoing - Marvel) - in a world of suck, this was the suckiest. Reading a series precis should be too much for most. A confusing mess that even a giant animated dog couldn't save.
Iron Fist (TV ongoing- Marvel) - talking of dogs, the runt of the Marvel Netflix litter. Boring punchathon with a mopey lead and characters you can't care about.
iZombie (TV ongoing - DC) - this feels like a season too far, or stretching the plot to suit commissioning requirements. The zombie soldiers thing could have played well, and the exclusion zone plot might have worked, but bringing basically all the characters back and the whole alive/dead/cure thing just felt like a reset button getting randomly mashed. When it works (going undercover at the zombie hunters club for example) it's on it, but otherwise not so much.
Legends of Tomorrow (TV ongoing - DC) - the goofy fun younger brother of the Arrowverse, but also the red-headed stepchild. Dumb fun that really doesn't take itself seriously and doesn't want to be, with big stoopid concepts - their communications devices go down because Helen of Troy timetravels to Hollywood and stops Heddy Lamarr becoming famous grab ya?
Legion (TV ongoing - Marvel) - the classiest and best made of all the tv shows. Loved it, and can't wait for series 2.
Logan (Film - Marvel) - saw it on a plane, didn't lose anything imo by not having the big screen. Felt like it was deliberately proving it was MATURE and NOT COMICS REALLY but the meta was too strong for me and I didn't care for the ending.
Lucifer (TV ongoing - DC) - secretly great. An engaging cast, slightly goofy plotting, the right level of camp... simple little detective plots move it along while the arc rumbles in the background. Although is there even one this year? I don't think so.
Outcast (TV ongoing - Image) - series one was great, this one not so much. Fells very much like contractual obligation for twofer commissioning and even Brent Spiner getting beaten up couldn't save it.
Powerless (TV - DC) - I actually didn't mind this. It was a fairly bog standard sitcom but was better than, say, The Big Bang Theory. OK, that was a low blow.
Preacher ( (TV ongoing - DC) - Sort of wading round in its own filth, could go somewhere but sort of doesn't. This series, what with revealing The Grail and Herr Star and all, should have been better than it was but had something definitely lacking. Probably wasn't funny enough?
The Punisher (TV ongoing - Marvel) - the best of all the Netflix series, ep 10 (in the hotel) would be the highlight of many other, more well regarded series and the final episode was a moving exploration of ptsd not matched in recent memory.
Riverdale (TV ongoing - Archie) - another where S2 has gone astray. I've just found myself not really caring about Northside vs Southside when it's got a dark spin on it and isn't about hot dog eating competitions.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (Film - Marvel) - a lot of fun, but felt like a mismatch. Spidey was a little too good/confident because of the super suit, whereas I could have done with more of the first Tobey film learning process.
Supergirl (TV ongoing - DC) - cast is too big and is leaning too heavily on the soap-y parts this season. A whole episode about lesbian daddy issues? Really? Thankfully the Legion of Super-Heroes are coming to save the day.
The Tick (TV ongoing) - enjoyed this a lot but inconsequential stuff. Almost a sequel/update to Mystery Men in tone which was pretty effective.
Thor: Ragnarok (Film - Marvel) - Taika does a tremendous job and the Kirby visuals made this a blast from start to finish.
Wonder Woman (Film-DC) - this was pretty dull, right? Not for me. I want Egg Fu.

Happy! hasn't actually started yet from the voting list so hard to see how anyone could vote for it.

Had missed Runaways starting so will give it a pop especially since all the DC shows are going into Christmas hiatus.
Haven't been to see Justice League yet and haven't heard a case for why it needs to be seen on the big screen. Will use the same logic as I did for GreySuit vs Greysuit: Dusk of Justice and pick it up on dvd for somewhere in the region of $5.
I quite enjoyed the first Kingsman but will wait until I happen across the sequel as I'm not going out of my way to see it.
I managed to miss Wilson the one night I could have seen it. Doesn't sound like I missed much.

agreed. me and mk2 loved this, totally bonkers, but very enjoyable.

mark e, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 11:13 (six years ago) link

As a comics nerd, I have no particular interest in any TV/movie adaptations but the MCU stuff won me over because they're (mostly) fun movies, irrespective of source material.

Spider-Man was awesome - it dragged for the last 45 mins but I was happy existing in its sweet little universe, and I'm glad they didn't kill off MK at the end.

I don't enjoy any of the SHEILD/Legion/Berlanti/Netflix stuff. I can see that some of the shows are better than others, but they're all too dull to make an effort with on an extended basis. (I guess I'm in the minority who found Legion to be tedious wank.)

The one show I really dug was S2 of Agent Carter, and that got cancelled so

I loved WW and Logan, liked Homecoming and Ragnarok. But I'll give the vote to Legion, which really caught me off guard. I was kinda amazed to see a surreal Shade-type comic onscreen, and loved every second of it. Far, far better than the Netflix shows, which rapidly tumbled down in quality (though I haven't watched Punisher yet).

Logan taken me by surprise, it was quite stirring at points and seeing an adorable little girl brutally murder adults was thrilling. But somehow I can't say I liked it or recommend it that much.

Legion - Seemed intriguing to start with but I agree that it's tedious.

Lego Batman - Made me laugh once or twice but I didn't like it. Too Robot Chicken geeky.

I'd like to see Atomic Blonde because it has the startling novelty of being a modern American action film with nice cinematography.

I'm realizing that I have basically no handle on what comics-related media gets the Shakey Seal of Approval vs. that which gets consigned to the Shakey Dumpster of Stupid Garbage.

Lego Batman was better in the Lego movie as a supporting character

cosmic brain dildo (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

that's true, but Lego Batman was still p good

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:44 (six years ago) link

"not as good as the Lego Movie" is not really a damning criticism, like.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

this is a thread where we can say these things
also the lego movie was extremely funny, much better than it had any business being

cosmic brain dildo (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 21:16 (six years ago) link

I didn't like it much. Quite impressive animation at times and occasionally funny but I thought it was underwhelming.

Poll missed Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

i thought this was japan only! did it get a western release?
i am at a loss as to how you capture that story in live action. it's a naked lunch size challenge.

It had a fair number of screenings across the world. I might actually give it a go but I'm not expecting much.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 21:35 (six years ago) link

Also, the part of the story it's adapting seems relatively down to earth in Jojo terms.

ohhhhhh yeah, i forgot that was miike's film; that makes a lot of sense really.
really need to see blade of the immortal, looks like a lot of fun.

I might give Blade Of The Immortal a shot but really, it's sad he doesn't seem to have been able to make films like the ones that made him famous.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

I don't know - you think Blade is really that far removed from Dead or Alive?

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 06:49 (six years ago) link

Started Runaways to see what it was like - wasn't feeling it at all after the first ep but the second replaying many of the same events from the other perspective kind of sold me on it. Looks like a minor winner at the moment.

Did you like the abysmal Eagle Vs Shark? That must have been co-created by Jared Hess, Wes Anderson and Satan in the lowest pit of hell.

There is a hint contained in the specific list of films I named as to which Waititi films I made it all the way through
