To the extent that everyone eventually dies and thus stops doing bad things, yes.

there isn't even a moral universe.

original quote was "moral arc", not "moral universe", which makes more sense.

What I see playing out over historical times is that the complications which arise from ever more complex and populous societies tend to outpace the ethical and moral frameworks within which those societies operate, but at some point the social strain caused by bad actors weakens the society to the point where it must reconfigure itself. The reconfiguration can come from social unrest and revolution, conquest by external forces, or in rare cases from peaceful and purposeful reform.

the arc of the moral arc is long

much clearer yes

mark s, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

It's not a straightforward arc: there's backstory, flashforwards, and false narratives amidst the tropes and leitmotifs- and the risk of a possible deus ex machina at the end.

I would go with 'y' because humankind is close to extinctioning itself, which is a pretty just development for the universe on the whole imho.

Ripped Taylor (Old Lunch), Friday, 1 December 2017 23:49 (six years ago) link

truthfully, we might have another 10,000 years to run before the last human runs out of luck, but in geologic time that's pretty close to tomorrow. our present cushy way of life, where hardly anyone grows the food we eat, a million people fly places everyday at 500 mph, and there are billions of us, won't last anywhere near that long. but that's not the same as extinction.

Dan S, Saturday, 13 July 2019 23:49 (four years ago) link

What I can't parse properly is what constitutes "the moral universe" and why it is in the shape of an arc. In ballistics, the trajectory of an object describes an arc because it begins to lose energy, be captured by gravity, and falls back to earth.

History, too, is sometimes said to have an arc, but I have never really discerned a unified direction of any sort in history, except when it is viewed very parochially and across limited periods of time. As my view of history broadens to include more detail and more localities, the more meandering or chaotic it seems.

If the idea is that injustices eventually get addressed as more time passes, that seems broadly true, but it seems equally true that as more time passes, more new injustices arise and the social capacity to address them does not increase.
