"She questions whether former Labour PM Jim Callaghan would have asked the Russian government to confirm the findings of the UK's intelligence agencies, and asks what it has come to when Jewish people are considering leaving the country as they do not feel safe"

is there a number for the jewish people leaving the country because they don't feel safe and how does it compare to the number of europeans leaving the country because of brexit?

Legit wooooow at May saying the Tories stand for opportunities such as “the opportunity for your Windrush parents to come to the UK and see you become candidate for London mayor”

Who are these “four nations” btw, I only count three.

Have You Seen Which Song The British PM Danced To During Her Speech: This Is Everything

Highest approval ratings for a Prime Minister ever

I'd forgotten that - in that magical time last year when the wheels were in motion to finally crush those saboteurs.

I don't know that I've ever seen a PM as unpopular as her now - possibly John Major? She seems to have literally no-one as a constituency.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:24 (five years ago) link

this is when she really became Prime Minister

stet, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:27 (five years ago) link

suspect this incredible dancing entrance is how I will remember her. it's like the necromancer who is controlling her and making her gun for a hard brexit she disagrees with is now forcing her body to move in unfamiliar ways and 'dance' awkwardly to put on a show for the party she must basically hate at this point. her rictus grin as she powers through constant humiliating internal deaths. I can only admire her ungodly determination.

ogmor, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:29 (five years ago) link

Yeah, Major in '92: deadbeat leader without a strong mandate, of a party divided by Europe, facing a Labour party that has reinvented itself since the previous election but has a leader who puts people off...

fetter, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:32 (five years ago) link

i have now watched that video and metal micky dances more convincingly

Whole speech is playing to the crowd and Corbyn- bashing. Like where’s their alternative? What difference are they going to make in people’s lives? Corbyn is the leader of the opposition, has any LOTO ever been the focus for the actual governing party in this way before?

Bitter laugh about the professed concern about tolerance from someone in a confidence and supply agreement with a party who’d see the GFA destroyed.

gyac, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:33 (five years ago) link

Blair surely? Especially as the hate for him has persisted, does anyone really hate Major anymore?

gyac, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:34 (five years ago) link

I can only admire her ungodly determination.

and let's not forget her ungodly determination to see brexit through is actually ungodly determination to do something she didn't believe in in the first place

she's a profoundly odd character

has any LOTO ever been the focus for the actual governing party in this way before

it's been a long time since a leader of the opposition has actually staked out a visibly different alternative future for the country in the way corbyn has, and the tories are shitting it

Also love to profess concern for Jewish community with one hand while protecting a virulently anti Semitic government with the other.

gyac, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 11:38 (five years ago) link

xxp At least Major did better in that election than anyone expected..

gyac - while the hate for him has clearly continued and deepened, there are still no shortage of people who'd vote for Blair again in a heartbeat.

Oh and by the way, fuck the complicit media letting people parrot “no deal is better than a bad deal” completely unchallenged. That something favoured by maybe 10% of people at an absolute maximum is seriously under consideration is nothing less than a dereliction of duty and everyone who let this shit go by unchallenged or undiscussed deserves to be completely ashamed.

This is arguably most important speech given by @theresa_may. She plants Conservative Party firmly in centre of politics, to fill the space she says @jeremycorbyn’s Labour has vacated. It shows, as I said on @NewsAtTen last night, she has no intention of quitting any time soon

— Robert Peston (@Peston) October 3, 2018

The plan for Britain to crash out without a deal is the centre now. Thanks for the scrutiny!

gyac, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:14 (five years ago) link

Some good news though, she's staying on as leader.

fishhook theory is real

gyac, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:17 (five years ago) link

is that all it takes to shift to the centre of politics, just a bit of lip service in a conference speech.

calzino, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:18 (five years ago) link

ah yes, 'the centre of politics', that comfortable goldilocks zone where *checks notes* the country is frantically stockpiling medicines against the threat of a supply-chain collapse

Call it what it is, an *attempt* to pitch herself into the centre ground, doomed to failure because Brexit is pretty much the #1 thing that pisses centrists off the most.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:28 (five years ago) link

I mean her last big well-received non-Brexit speech was just after she became leader, which small shoots of hope have resulted in the news that she'll be cancelling Austerity next year, provided she gets her way with Brexit, which she won't.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:31 (five years ago) link

Brb scrubbing my eyes w/ soap after seeing that 'dancing' footage. I can't decide whether she's determined or deranged. Probably both.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:33 (five years ago) link

I won't believe she's trying to capture the centre ground until she makes some vague pledges and literally has them carved into stone, that would show serious intent!

calzino, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link

Theresa May’s speech - Snap verdict: By the relatively low standard of what was expected, that was a success - probably even a triumph.

She convinced the Gruan tho

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 3 October 2018 12:35 (five years ago) link

it's definitely an abject failure then.

"Austerity is over" would seem to contradict what Hammond was saying earlier in the week. Not sure it's going to go down well with the electorate either - "we could have just turned it off at any point" is the message it sends out.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 13:52 (five years ago) link

given that the financial situation is pretty ropey, I guess it's partly getting their story straight for if Labour do come to power? "it was a long painful process, but we fixed the economy, then Labour ruined it again"?

soref, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 13:58 (five years ago) link

When the ATOS PIP assessors come to the house on Friday for a face to face assessment with my partner with MS. I'm going to tell them: The Dancing Dead Cat says austerity is over, so assess accordingly motherfuckers!

Bit difficult to do that when there's no food on the shelves because the lorries are stuck at Calais.
