The Wye Valley

anyone ever been here? English / Welsh marches, from Tintern Abbey up to Hay-on-Wye. Wordsworth country. you *know*.

tell me about it. it's sort of the inspiration for my other thread. a friend went there 31 years ago, and I know I'll never get *that* feeling, but I want to see how close I can come.

The pub at Symonds Yat is very nice

Robin I know it quite well (can't remember if I've mentioned it to you before). I've stayed in or near Tintern a number of times in recent years. It's beautiful round there but it couldn't possibly match up to your expectations.

you haven't mentioned it, David (I'd remember if you had).

the sad thing is, the reason why it couldn't bring on *that* feeling is not to do with what it looks like, or what you can do there, but it is simply a matter of Time.

two weeks pass...
ok, I've put aside all my doubts and uncertainties on the matter and will hopefully be trekking through the Wye Valley next year - probably mid-May, about six months' time. anyone who knows the area and who might be interested in joining me (long shot on the latter, I know) please email me.

The man's right about Symond's Yat - and the western slopes of the Forest of Dean generally - eg ST Briavels. If it's all getting a bit politely lovely, head for these places, that have real darkness.

I know this is the sort of really crappy joke that R*bb** W*ll**ms was making on Mark Goodier's final Top 40 show last night, but I keep thinking of a phantom Pharaohe Monch radio edit: "all my people to the back, Symonds Yat, now what's up ..."

(actually, that's quite clever I think. not as good as Marcello's "Frome nap, a vignette" though, obviously.)

Jon's dead right about the Forest of Dean, incidentally, though the Long Mynd is a higher priority for me (think Malcolm Saville).

thirteen years pass...

Doesn't quite feel like the right thread to post on ... but if anyone is visiting Hay-on-Wye, here was very good indeed:

The following evening, we went to the tapas bar across the road. It felt a bit like someone had once visited Spain, had enjoyed a nice tapas and then tried to recreate the food from memory upon their return to the UK ... and then not particularly successfully.
