I Love Something Specific that isn't Music

From time to time someone suggests another board should be started. I'm not in favour of it myself, I like the multiplicity of the threads and the way they all bang together in New Answers (and thread connections), but just to stir things up...

Food? Movies? Books? B*ngb*u? Visual Art? Kittens?

All of these things COULD be discussed in great technical depth on their own board. What you say?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Not food, food keeps ILE alive, it really does, the food threads are some of the best. Am I the only one who enjoys constantly rediscovering just what mentalists like pineapples on pizza and berating them?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Food no. Movies maybe. Books yeah? BB no. VA maybe. Kittens YES!!!.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

If it wasn't for the warnings given by Stevo and others about the risk of an ILF (ootball) I think it would be a great idea.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I love myself, where everybody posts about how great they are, and every thread is unanswered! haha!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

my thinking is that isolating the threads as entities-unto-themselves serves to spotlight and therefore encourage deeper discussion within them. I think this might be potentially truer of movies than anything else just by dint of there being so much to talk about re: them. plus movie buffs would probably have the same response music geeks did: "an entire board devoted to this stuff, frequented by smart people who care? sign me up!" thus keeping the discussions alive.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

(that is once they've Googled whatever thread hooks them in, as always)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The thing with ILM - which I had no idea about when I started it up - is that it turns out there was a real lack of generalist, enthusiastic, smart music boards around. I assumed there must be loads of the things but apparently not, so as Matos says ILM (while far from perfect) has attracted lots of new people. It would need to be a subject which could find a similar 'niche'.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 31 October 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

ILC--I Love Cinema? (I usually don't like "film" or "cinema," preferring the term "movies," but ILM is already taken...)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I Hate Films was rubbish though - that Crispian DeSavary was a right nob.

I prefer to keep the film threads on here really.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Kittens - except there's already 100's of cat groups out there on the net. That's were the real mentalists are.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i love fremme neppa vennette (ILFNV)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I love chess!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I sorta like ILE being its all-encompassing self.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

How about I Love Licking Coins On Massive Mounds Undulating Needlessly in Cheese and Tarragon Ice Owl Nests -

Ill communication

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I Love ILE! (ILI)

(Because ILE is not a member of the set of Everything and we are all unshaven Cretan lying barbers wandering around infinite libraries etc etc)

Sam (chirombo), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Ned. Preserve the Union.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)

BOOKS! Matos: someone told me there is an ILM-y like site for movie geeks, I'll investigate and get back to you...

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

There's Cinemarati: http://www.cinemarati.org/roundtable

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I love conkers?

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I Love Love Because I'm So Bloody Twee

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you going through a period of self-doubt Alix? Just try thinking about how shiny and brown they are, and you'll be right as rain before you know it.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Where'd those 0's come from?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It's so sad now, they're all just lying on the ground in the rain, in leaf mulch, gradually going back to Thee Earth and they look ugly and faded. Good thing I collected a few, but even they are looking dried up. They're Cheerio's, Jel, to cheer up those saddened by conker demise.

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(I'm fiddling jel. Now on threads you'll get a full width line every time a thread has been dormant for more than five days. The o's where a fuckup, but there's still a whole lot of good in them)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

You're fiddling Jel? Filthy.

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I would post on I Love Conkers. When I was about 6, me and my sister collected about 200 of them, and they all went mouldy in the yard, but one of them started to grow some shoots of green. I took it to class to show, I was very proud of my conker tree. I can't remember what happened to it though.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It died?

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

probably :(

or maybe it's still growing somewhere!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOVE FIDDLING JEL

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

leave out the fiddling and it'll be okay I guess.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I Love Video Game Store Clerks

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 31 October 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

you're proabably all right about an ILC not working. there's this to consider, too: in my (limited) experience, movie buffs tend to be even more hard-line (and less fun) than music geeks (which isn't to cast aspersions on all movie buffs etc.). the pro-pop stance that ILM began with trickles down into ILE in interesting ways (wish I could think of specific examples, sorry), but it would, I suspect, work less well in a community full of movie buffs.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I want it all to stay part of ILE - I love its comprehensiveness.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 1 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I think making an I love In-jokes is good, then you can ban them all from ILE.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 2 November 2002 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I love movies too and would love to discuss them lots. That being said - on the money about movie buffs. I remember trying to go onto the usenet movie groups, rec.arts.cinema or whatever it was - those people were INSANE. I'd rather just imagine myself talking to someone about films than talk to some of those people ever again.

I just don't have anything more to say about music, I guess.
