Hawke is granted powers by a cosmic entity and flies onscreen in First Reformed iirc

There's nothing in the prequel that will come as a surprise to anyone who's already seen Reformed.

Mom's out working, for fulfillment (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

the brave move would have been coming out against the middlebrow awards bait which is also stealing oxygen from smaller films

like really giving Darkest Hour the business

All sorts of Hollywood bullshit is nominated for awards every year. I don't see any major difference between something like, say, Training Day, and the more critically acclaimed superhero flicks

training day is a good movie

logan or black panther or avengers are good comic book movies

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:42 (five years ago) link

it's all pulp

Number None, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link

yeah look i get it but none of the comic movies transcend the capes and the dialogue tbh

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link

fine with me

yes

ive enjoyed most of the marvels et al but nobody elevated any of them that i can recall unforch

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:25 (five years ago) link

training day was the best argument for david ayer sticking to scriptwriting over directing, or maybe an argument for antoine fuqua not being able to spin straw into gold when it comes to some of the other scripts he's directed

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

I'm not sure what anyone is talking about anymore. If that is at all my fault I apologize.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

When are they making a Carvel movie?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

wow, just perusing Hawke's filmography and I guess he starred in a Fuqua-directed Magnificent Seven remake in 2016

where is your Bergman now, Ethan?

Number None, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

hawke is v interesting is there a marvel for him out there

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:42 (five years ago) link

obviously he ranks that as acting in a kurosawa adaptation remake, top flight material

the point is fair though: most of the superhero movies, at their most serious, aren't that far off from magnificent seven. only instead of tracking down a guy who can shoot uncommonly well to join your team, you end up recruiting a guy with claws or w/e

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

A lot of them are like "let's get the band back together again!" stories, except instead of a battle of the band at the end there is just a battle.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

searching for Hawke today gets you: "Ethan Hawke Joins Terrence Howard, Wesley Snipes In The RZA-Directed Heist Thriller ‘Cut Throat City’"

he really should stop criticizing other people for having a shtick when he keeps doing these roles that are definitely a shtick

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link

lol also: "Ethan Hawke on Why Vincent D'Onofrio Deserves an Oscar More than 'Some British Dork'"

hmm what's D'Onofrio been up to lately

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

Yeah, but he does those movies to pay for stuff like "First Reformed," right? Five for them, and one for me.

Ethan Hawke should try for one of those tons-of-makeup roles, or a CGI animal person or something. Get that Groot money.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

hmm what's D'Onofrio been up to lately

Acting AG, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:47 (five years ago) link

i think he may be great idk tho its the kind of suspicion that would disappear if i looked harder than sideways at it

puppy bash (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link

i believe i’ve already established itt that ethan hawke will be playing johnny blaze in the ghost rider reboot i am casting in my mind

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:51 (five years ago) link

I get the point that movies that have an actual artistic intent and involve more work from the actors in the realm of, say, acting rather than having the patience to sit in a makeup chair for eight hours are preferable work and are subjectively better as art. Reading about how the Coens decided they'd rather pitch to Netflix than try to make a play for traditional studio money for their oddball project is kind of disheartening. But if actors can work on smaller projects and parlay that success into a big paycheck wearing a cape and pretending to punch people, then sure, go for it

mh, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 21:52 (five years ago) link

Ethan Hawke = Maxwell Lord obviously

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:10 (five years ago) link

Any era Max you like: Mrs Wootenhoffer, Maximum Force, the psycho years

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:11 (five years ago) link

no way, hawke is way too ratfaced for max lord

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

i always thought of max as like a young george hamilton

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:17 (five years ago) link

Max Lord was and is still Sam Neill

hawke is v interesting is there a marvel for him out there

Speedball ffs, read the thread

Reading about how the Coens decided they'd rather pitch to Netflix than try to make a play for traditional studio money

afaik they pitched and sold it to Annapurna, then Annapurna got it financed by Netflix

sans lep (sic), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:21 (five years ago) link

If Hawke is passed over for Blaze and Speedball, I'll see if I can pull some strings with the casting director for the upcoming D-Man flick.

Mom's out working, for fulfillment (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

he’ll have to get on the steroids

this is of course the correct answer

We're in 2009—it's time to take risks, (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:41 (five years ago) link

If Hawke is passed over for Blaze

he directed the solo film iirc so that would be a real snub

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:53 (five years ago) link

anyway he should play a middle-aged, battle-weary Cyclops

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 22:54 (five years ago) link

the Method Man biopic?

resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 4 December 2018 23:33 (five years ago) link

Ok fine Ethan Hawke is Major Disaster, Oberon, or all four Challengers of the Unknown in different face prosthetics

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 23:56 (five years ago) link

Ethan Hawke is Matter Eater Lad
