Leaving doors, cabinets, drawers, dishwasher, fridge open, water running etc.

Because you know you're going to use it again in like 30 seconds and why waste your energy?

I do this CONSTANTLY and I think it's driven other people I've lived with crazy. Do you do this? If someone you're living with does this, does it make you insane? I want to get an informal read on leaving things open, its proponents and its malcontents. Thank u!

i do this for sure

marcos, Monday, 12 February 2018 20:23 (six years ago) link

until i notice i have like 4 kitchen drawers and cabinets open at once and the fridge is beeping

marcos, Monday, 12 February 2018 20:24 (six years ago) link

related, except the opposite: when i shared a flat with my sister she would often turn the lights off when she left a room even though ppl were still in the room

Cabinets, drawers: yes if I'm going to use them again. Most appliances: no, except if Ive taken some effort to get the water hot. Microwave: yes, to air the smells out after I've cooked something in it and my wife objects. But she'll leave the fridge door open while preparing a sandwich or something so definitely not one to talk, imo.

why waste your energy?

saving less than 2 calories of it makes zero difference to anything real, whereas the waste involved with the open fridge or running water is much more tangible, even if it is also minimal.

as for drawers, cabinet doors, etc. if there's no one else in the room who might be inconvenienced by an open drawer or door sticking out, then it's moot. if they impede or endanger others who are trying to operate in the same space, then closing them is a courtesy.

do they get mad because you leave a cabinet door open for 30 seconds? or do they get mad because you leave a cabinet door open more or less indefinitely as you go to work, sleep, outside, etc?

this only bothers me in the kitchen, in the kitchen i very much prefer stuff stays closed. this is probably about trying to be more disciplined and less chaotic when i cook.

My co-worker makes fun of me because I do this all the time in the kitchen apparently. :( We were having coffee earlier (ok we were scoffing chocolate and killing time) and she said hey look behind you. I had left 4 different cabinet doors open. I don't even realize I do it.

Oh the fridge was beeping too because I'd left one of the freezer drawers open.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 12 February 2018 21:28 (six years ago) link

think I'm fine with everything listed except water running / fridge door open / other wasting of resources

, Monday, 12 February 2018 21:31 (six years ago) link

tbf I had tried to close the freezer drawer, but it got stuck a little so maybe that one doesn't count

Alderweireld Horses (darraghmac), Monday, 12 February 2018 21:41 (six years ago) link

We'll leave the fridge open in order to assure that we both get a similar amount of the Chinese takeout left overs.

Evan, Monday, 12 February 2018 21:51 (six years ago) link

x-post - It looked exactly like how mine does have I do dishes. Lady wife otm.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 12 February 2018 21:59 (six years ago) link

xp

and the whole deng thing gets complicated when we put other kinds of food inside the chinese containers, but overall it works out great for them because it encourages us to order more.

Evan, Monday, 12 February 2018 22:15 (six years ago) link

Especially classic approach on a work night when no one is going to get any sleep after all. Shame about that really important meeting at 9am eh?

What can I say, it's a sensitive issue.

Cabinets, drawers: yes if I'm going to use them again.

What, like, EVER?

Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:34 (six years ago) link

Alderweireld Horses (darraghmac), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:39 (six years ago) link

If doors were meant to be left open then you wouldn't have been killed by me for leaving the door open QED

If god didn't want us to live in suspense of his judgement he wouldn't have made me so lazy

Alderweireld Horses (darraghmac), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:44 (six years ago) link

Aside from my perfectly reasonable sense of outrage at your laziness and lac of attention to detail, doors and drawers shouldn't be left open because they're a tripping and head-banging hazard, because the whole point is to keep the contents free of dust, dirt, bugs, aerosolized cooking grease, crumbs, and pet hair, which they will not be if they sit open, and because drawer slides are ugly and not meant to be looked at.

Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:47 (six years ago) link

oh i just leave my bedroom door open

papa poutine (∞), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:48 (six years ago) link

No one cares about bedroom doors (well, I don't). I mean like kitchen cupboard doors that lurk stealthily overhead until someone calls your name or you remember you left the burner on and you quickly pivot and subsequently have to go to the emergency room at 10pm. Or utensil drawers right at hip or knee height in between the sink and the stove, or right behind you in the center island, which are completely harmless until you back up while holding a hot roasting pan full of molten fat and $40 worth of roast.

Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:52 (six years ago) link

oh ya i close cabinets and drawers and the freezer and glass sliding doors and all that stuff

papa poutine (∞), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:57 (six years ago) link

Hope u weren't holding a roast when u backed up there boss
