Saw the documentary/experimental whatsit El Mar La Mar at MoMA... very "experiential," but I liked it anyway. Explores the Sonoran Desert, where people (often Mexicans attempting to emigrate to the US) wander and sometimes die. Great sound design.

Currently showing in UK arthouses, Valeska Griesbach's Western is easily the best film I've seen this year - Maren Ade was one of the producers, though this is a very different beast, in every sense, from Toni Erdmann.

Liked Andrew Haigh's Lean on Pete, on the surface a boy-and-horse movie but really about youth being damaged by weak/bad/absent males, I think. Solid, pitiless character work by Buscemi and Sevigny as end-of-the-line trainer and jockey. There are third-act problems. Don't take the kids.

Xavier Beauvois' The Guardians is a classicist, WWI family farm melodrama that some people will delight in calling "boring." It's not! Nathalie Baye (at 69) extraordinary as a burdened matriarch.

The sequences, although open to individual interpretation, have their effect guided by a score, from Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), that colours the visuals with emotion.

― the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 14:47 (five years ago) link
Can’t believe Fred used this thread to post about films that are never coming to a theatre near you
Anyway l forgot to say that I managed not to fall asleep in Arcadia even tho I was incredibly tired, and I really really liked it! This kind of thing is catnip to me anyway, and there were some really smart and effective editing choices throughout - there’s a bit of the score that’s like gleeful tiswas glitter rock and it’s perfectly deployed
― U. K. Le Garage (wins), Friday, 29 June 2018 18:17 (five years ago) link
Oh god, I'd missed this, lol. It's doubly idiotic, since what gets into festivals like Berlin has a really big influence into which films actually get wider distribution. Though perhaps not in New York, lol, but talk about 1%.

There's a 2-year-old Norwegian film, Gavagai, that just opened in NYC to raves from both Slant and Richard Brody, but damn I found it slow and obvious. A literary ghostly road movie. YMMV.

Saw Nico, 1988 last night, which is at the upper end of mediocre. KJB loved it though. Her inscrutable manager was played by John Gordon Sinclair of the Bill Forsyth films, principally Gregory's Girl. I liked Trine Dyrholm's performance, and it captures some of the mundane grimness of an addict on tour. "We need HEROIN!"

The acting performance is fine but I would have preferred if they used the original recordings instead of the actress singing with a bar band. Also the script is really bare bones connect-the-dots, no real insight, just over obvious stuff or no explanation at all.

saw Cold War, liked the opening and closing acts, less convinced about what happens in between. a little trite at times, a little dull in others. intentionally disinterested in anyone other than the leads and doesn't help that it focuses on the least charismatic of the pair. a lot of the thematic stuff about art and propaganda ends up feeling like window dressing. will win the oscar.

it's cool! definitely the kind of art-house movie that would have a lot of people shifting in their seats and walking out halfway through. but it has some smart things on its mind and it's very well-acted. there are a couple of scenes/lines that are really going to stay in my personal language for talking about art/creation/collaboration and its power dynamics. my only disappointment was that the trailer suggested it'd be this completely bonkers freewheeling flow of shot into the next shot etc. and it's much more conventional than that.

Letterboxd tells me that Doctor Casino has seen and liked The Sisters Brothers... anyone else? It's the first English-lang film by the French director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) but the NYT Mag profile of him revealed that it was John C Reilly's wife who really pushed to get the source novel filmed.

it's good and it's stuck with me! saw it a few weeks back and it popped into my mind while i was doing dishes just this morning. took a while for me to find its vibe/pacing (and particularly to get a bead on gyllenhaal's character, which at first glance just sounds like terrible acting). the episodic structure makes it feel a little longer than it is. but it's got some really interesting stuff on its mind imo.
